Senator Yonah Martin Report THE HONOURABLE YONAH MARTIN Monthly Newsletter A p r i l 2 0 1 9 Senate of Canada AMBASSADOR FOR C3 INAUGURAL PEACE MEDAL LEADERSHIP UBC CEREMONY CONFERENCE WOMEN IN HOUSE SENATOR'S MESSAGE Greetings from Ottawa! Salutations d’Ottawa! April is here already - happy April Fools Day! March began with the 100th anniversary of the Independence Movement of the Korean people from colonialism with special commemorative events in every region of the country. The anniversary brought to light the important role of Canadians in Korea during that period, which is the basis of the deep and enduring relationship between Canada and Korea today. With that, the rest of March became explosive with the growing SNC-Lavalin scandal involving Prime Minister Trudeau, his office and officials at the highest level; as well as the tabling of the high spending 2019 deficit budget, putting the future of hard- working Canadians and their children and grandchildren at great risk. The Hon. Andrew Scheer and our Conservative caucus are working diligently in both the Senate and the House of Commons to hold the Trudeau government to account. Canadians across the country recently mourned the loss of 49 innocent victims in the New Zealand mosque attacks and the lives of 18 Canadians lost in the Ethiopian plane crash. Our prayers and thoughts go out to the victims, their families, friends and communities. In April I look forward to commemorating the anniversaries of the Battle of Gapyeong and the Battle of Vimy Ridge. On a daily basis, I am humbled and sincerely grateful for the opportunity to represent and serve in my capacity as Senator and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate. AMBASSADOR FOR PEACE MEDAL CEREMONY Clearwater, FL Senator Martin attended a special ceremony in Clearwater, Florida in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the American Legion Post 7 and the 77th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion Post 144 (that is also based in Clearwater and meets in the same building). She participated in the “Ambassador for Peace Medal” ceremony organized by Canadians Hoo Jung Jones Kennedy and Major (Ret’d) Don Kennedy, to honour the service and sacrifice of Canadian and American veterans of the Korean War: the late James D. Bell, the late John A. Smith, the late Ralph L. Merritt, the late Henry Edsel Ford, Ben St. Clair, Anthony Joseph Bazarewsky, Kathy Hunter on behalf of Frank Steers, and Geraldine and Larry Boudreau on behalf of Norman Joseph Boudreau. Senator Martin dedicated a Silver Star on the Honour Wall to the Korea War Veterans. Click here to see the full gallery. C3 LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Vancouver, BC As the honorary patron of C3 Korean Canadian Society, Senator Martin attended the 12th Annual Leadership Conference. This year 3 keynote speakers (Frank Jung, Michele Kim, and Simu Liu) attended to share about their experiences of breaking the “bamboo ceiling” as successful Asian representatives in their work. The students in attendance benefited from a time of networking, informative panel discussions, workshops, and mentoring sessions to foster the growth and development of our next generation of leaders. Click here to see the full gallery. INAUGURAL UBC WOMEN IN HOUSE Ottawa, ON Two years in the making, Senator Martin was excited to welcome the first group of female students from the University of British Columbia as the inaugural UBC Women in House program was successfully launched in partnership with Moura Quayle, Founding Director of the School and Public Policy and Global Affairs of the Liu Institute for Global Issues. 10 capable UBC students participated in the two-day program on Parliament Hill. On day 1, the delegation toured the Parliamentary Precinct and officially welcomed in the Senate Chamber by Senator Martin; they participated in a panel discussion and lunch with MP Shannon Stubbs and two senior political staffers (from the House and Senate); and concluded the day with an evening reception with co-host and UBC alum MP Ed Fast and other parliamentarians, Ambassadors and High Commissioners as well as UBC alumni. Sincere thanks to reception co-hosts Senator Campbell, Senator Jaffer, MP Jenny Kwan, MP Joyce Murray, and MP Alice Wong. On their last day, the students shadowed a Senator or MP for the day to witness and gain insights about life on the Hill for Canadian parliamentarians. THE HONOURABLE YONAH MARTIN S e n a t e N e w s l e t t e r J u n e 1 s t , 2 0 1 9 http://yonahmartin.sencanada.ca/ Senate of Canada ASIAN HERITAGE HOLD HIGH THE BULGARIA DAY MONTH TORCH LUNCHEON ON THE HILL SENATOR'S MESSAGE Sincere greetings from Ottawa! Salutations d’Ottawa! 오타와에서 인사드립니다! Throughout the month of May, there were events celebrating the accomplishments of Asian Canadians throughout Canadian history, as well as special events that brought people together to share stories, discuss relevant topics, network and be inspired. It was also a time to reflect on the pioneering Asian Canadians across our country who paved the way for others to pursue their dreams and reach their potential. Congratulations to my dedicated staff Grace Seear, Kristin Doyle and Grace Lee for becoming honorary members of KVA Unit 7 in the presence of our beloved veterans. It was also an honour for me to be named an Honorary ROTCian at the 2019 ROTC North America Conference in Calgary, AB. In the Senate of Canada, we had a very busy legislative schedule in May, and anticipate longer sittings in June as the end of this current Parliament comes to a close and we rise for the summer and the fall election that awaits us all. As always, my staff and I thank you for your continued support and look forward to serving you to the best of our abilities. - Senator Yonah Martin ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH Ottawa, ON On May 10th, Senator Martin co-hosted the Voices in Action Breakfast with the Ottawa Asian Heritage Month Society and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.
