CB4 has hosted SantaCon once already and opposes that the event take place in CB4 again. CB4 recognizes that at any large event, a few bad actors may disrupt an otherwise orderly affair, but at previous SantaCons bad actors have been less of the exception and more the rule. In the past when SantaCon took place in our community the board office and committee meetings were besieged by complaints. In any event CB4 insists that you work cooperatively with the New York City Police Department and the local elected officials in order to come up with a more effective plan to combat public intoxication and to ensure all participants are respectful of the neighborhoods they visit, as well as handling the overwhelming crowds associated with an event this size. The reason for this is that SantaCon is known mostly as an epic pub crawl with thousands of participants with very little supervision. While SantaCon may be a short-term boon to a select group of local businesses, the event has become known for the negative impact it has on the community and the unwanted behavior of its participants such as vomiting in the streets, public urination, vandalism and littering.

Dave’s passion for real ale was the reason The Fat Cat started and helped to make Sheffield the real ale capital that it is today. Dave will be sadly missed by all at The Fat Cat and Kelham Island Brewery. Sheffield CAMRA offers our condolences to the family Dave leaves behind, the sad loss of Dave sees him leave quite a legacy as pretty much the founder of the current booming real ale scene. We’ll have more about Dave’s achievements in the next issue of Beer Matters. Steel City Brewing - www.steelcitybrewing.co.uk Steel City originally didn’t intend to partake in CAMRA’s Mild Month, but when they decided to get in on the act, they were unsurprisingly not going for half measures - and so their mild has no bitterness at all! After brewing the ultra-bitter 666IBUDCLXVI in Brizzle with Arbor, the return leg saw Jon travel to Sheffield to brew a 0IBU red mild. Using a sack each of melanoidin and carared to get a deep red colour, the brew was then boiled for a minimal time, with no bittering hops - although there is a twist in the form of shed loads of hops after flame-off! The beer is also Steel City’s contribution to the jubilee ‘celebrations’, and given its red colour and Dave & Gazza’s views on royalty, Bolshevik Solution seemed the perfect name.

The pub scene will buzz around your crew as a mix of singles and couples join together to enjoy a few beers. This is the perfect opportunity to bridge your private and public relationship lives. First thing’s first: pick a locale. Popular cities for St. Patrick’s Day include Boston, New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Savannah and Phoenix. Search on Yelp or CitySearch so you can put together a list of bars, pubs and taverns that you want to visit throughout the night. Be sure to pick out spots that offer a wide range of brews, fit your budget and have an impressive menu — no drinking on an empty stomach! An important thing to remember is to keep all of your bars in one general area; having just one bar out of the way may encourage drunk driving, and you want to remain safe on this night. It’s always a good idea to call the bars ahead of time to let them know you’re coming — you’ll have space reserved for your party, and they may even offer you a discount.     Louisville “Southern-ness” The New Bourbonism– Louisville’s first distillery since Prohibition opened in the heart of downtown in the Fall of 2013 signaling a new era in Bourbon that Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer coined as “Bourbonism” for its convergence of economic development through manufacturing and tourism. The Evan Williams Bourbon Experience became the first distillery the public could tour in Louisville as other brands have been coming on line. The Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Experience opened at the historic Stitzel-Weller Distillery in the fall of 2014 five miles from downtown and a new brandy distillery opened in the summer of 2014 in the Butchertown neighborhood – Copper & Kings. The father and son team of Carson & Corky Taylor resurrected a family label with the opening of the craft Peerless Distillery in summer 2015 and the fall saw the opening of the Jim Beam Urban Stillhouse at the Fourth Street Live! entertainment district. Under construction and soon to join Evan Williams and Peerless on historic Whiskey Row are Angel’s Envy Distillery (fall 2016) and Michter’s Distillery (2017). In addition, Old Forester plans a distillery and visitor experience in two former barrel wharehouses dating back to the 1850’s. The new Whiskey Row attraction will open in 2017. The pub crawl that is the Urban Bourbon Trail continues to grow alongside the popularity of bourbon with 35 stops, each well-stocked with at least 50 bourbons; some as many as 150. Speed Art Museum Reopening – After a three-year, $50 million expansion at Kentucky’s oldest and largest art museum, the Speed Art Museum finally reopened in March 2016.
