During sev- eral years, he published a comprehensive overview of the market. This report took a broad approach to examining the European and World markets in search of new information, and has thus followed changes over time and provided new ideas to operators. This overview, selec- tively distributed, has already been well-utilized by large organizations active in mountain tourism. One of the key objectives was to feed the thought process of the industry and to render local actors more aware of key changes and new ideas. In its search for information on ski areas, Mr. Vanat quickly understood the im- portance of tracking skier visits and collecting statistical data. Noting the difficulty in consolidating this information for the Swiss market, he

  • A Network-Based Approach for the Study of Criticalities in Ski-Resorts
International Snow Science Workshop Grenoble – Chamonix Mont-Blanc - 2013 A network-based approach for the study of criticalities in ski-resorts Valerio De Biagi1,2*, Barbara Frigo1,2 and Bernardino Chiaia1,2 1 Dept. of Structural, Geotechnical and Building Engineering, Politecnico di Torino, ITALY 2Mountain Risk Research Team – MRR Team, Verrès (AO) – Italy ABSTRACT: The correct management of ski-resorts requires wide knowledge in mountain hazards, as well as a large experience. Usually ski-resorts cover a surface that encompasses more than one side of a mountain (or more than one valley); for this reason, the meteorological conditions may vary locally and rapid decisions have to be taken in order to ensure the safety of the skiers. Any intervention on the structure of the resort may entail cascade events and other critical situations. For example, a temporary closure of a lift may create large queues in other parts of the ski-area. In the same way, a closure of a ski-slope might engender overcrowding in other ski runs. All these situations are potential sources of risk. We propose an approach to the study of criticalities in ski-resorts by means of transportation network approaches based on the ability of the skiers and the grade of the ski run. An example is made on the Antagnod branch of MonteRosaSki resort. The effects of a sudden interruption of part of it, i.e., ski- slope closure or lift temporary interruption, are simulated. KEYWORDS: Ski-resort management, Graph theory, Criticalities. others (2005) made a statistics of the average 1 INTRODUCTION speeds of skiers in three different ski resorts in the US.

  • Georgia Greentours Itinerary Wildlife Holiday Botanical Tour Birdwatching
Georgia A Greentours Itinerary Days 1 & 2 Davit Gareja We leave the UK in the afternoon bound for Istanbul from where we'll pick uo our connection to Tbilisi, landing there early in the morning. Note that there are now flights from Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham which follow the same routing. Open steppe country with rolling grasslands covered in shimmering stipa grasses stretches southwest from the airport. There is only one road, a few tracks, and hardly any settlements. Occasional early Christian churches interrupt the landscape, some of these, such as the one at Davit Gareja, world-famous. Natlismtsemeli Church is fantastically situated on an eroded bluff above unspoilt steppe rich in beautiful plants. The spectacular Dictamnus caucasicus dominates along with orange Colutea lutea and the stunning Verbascum formosum. The last blooms of Iris pumila can be found amongst Celsia orientalis and the endemic Thymus tiflisensis. Flocks of Rose-colored Starlings make sorties past us as Griffon Vultures hang low in the air. Amongst Campanula hohenackeri and large pink- flowered endemic Salvia garejii fly plenty of butterflies and garnering nourishment from the many knapweeds on show is the bizarre scarlet Phelypaea coccinea. Day 3 - 5 The Greater Caucasus – Gudauri, Cross Pass and Truso Gorge The impressively high snowy peaks of the Greater Caucasus are visible even as one drives out of Tbilisi. Within an hour we are rising steadily up the Aragvi Valley and into the heart of these great mountains. Higher than the European Alps and much less populated, this is a truly wild region. Once up into the mountains we’ll pass few settlements until we reach the ski resort at Gudauri.
