Darwin Wolford About Today’s Program Alexander Schreiner (born July 31, 1901; died September 15, 1987) served as a Tabernacle organist for over 50 years (1924–1977) and was widely regarded as one of the greatest performers of his time. In addition to accompanying The Tabernacle Choir on their broadcasts, performances, and recordings, he also hosted his own Sunday evening broadcast and maintained a busy touring schedule as a soloist. Schreiner wrote the music for nine hymns and four children’s songs that are currently used in the Church; he also published three widely used volumes of organ voluntaries. Born in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1901, Schreiner emigrated to the United States with his family in 1912. His early organ studies were with John J. McClellan at the Tabernacle, and he later spent time under the tutelage of Charles-Marie Widor and Louis Vierne in Paris. He was heavily involved in the planning and design of the Tabernacle’s Æolian-Skinner organ, which was installed during his tenure as a Tabernacle organist. Today’s program features organ music written and arranged by Alexander Schreiner, as well as several arrangements by his former pupils and colleagues. Today’s performers, John Longhurst and Clay Christiansen, were both pupils of Schreiner, and they have carried his legacy forward with distinction. Today’s program, as with all Piping Up! episodes, is available for on-demand viewing on the Choir’s YouTube channel, on the Choir’s Facebook page, and at TabChoir.org/pipingup.
