Fall2013_5x8_AdSlick_Combo_EN_FINAL.indd 1 13-08-30 12:36 PM 14 - THE WEEKLY SENTINEL - Thursday, October 3, 2013 Good turnout for Schomberg Country Run The annual Schomberg Country Run drew a lot of support and participants Saturday for the annual fundraiser. Half of the proceeds go toward the ongoing minis- try of the Anglican Parish of Lloydtown (Schomberg and Kettleby) and half go toward clean drinking wa- ter initiatives in the north. This year, funds will be going to Pikangikum, On- tario, an indigenous community north of Kenora on the Berens River. In 2000, Pikangikum had the highest suicide rate in the world (mostly teenagers and young women). Studies have shown that the first thing needed to pre- vent suicide among aboriginal people is to address basic infrastructure needs like clean water, indoor plumbing, housing and heating. In conjunction with the Pikangikum Working Group and the Primates World Relief and Develop- ment Fund, locals are working toward providing safe drinking water and sewage disposal that will work in their context. Currently, 95% of the homes in Pi- kangikum are without these necessities. “Today, we are one step closer to our goal of clean drinking water for all Canadians,” said Rev. Sheilagh Ashworth.
