[generalNote]: Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note In 1600 Sir William Herbert of Cogan Pill purchased a portion of the manor of Dinas Powis from Elizabeth I, to add to the portion that was already his through inheritance. He appears to have been succeeded by 1610 by Sir John Herbert (d. c. 1619), sometime secretary to the Privy Council. By 1665, a moiety of the manor of Dinas Powis appears to have passed to Robert Greville (c. 1638-1676), baron Brooke of Warwick Castle, whose descendants sold the moiety to William Hurst of Gabalfa, Cardiff, around 1766. This Dinas Powis estate appears to have been sold to Henry Lee in about 1816, after the death of William Hurst (d. c. 1801) and of his widow (d. c. 1816). Other members of the Lee family include Edward Herbert Lee (alive 1839-1841) of Dinas Powis, esq., his son Rev. Henry Thomas Lee (fl. 1839-1868), and Major-general H. H. Lee (fl. 1879-1919) of Dinas Powis. The Wenvoe Castle estate also had an interest in the manor of Dinas Powis, 1839-1897, perhaps owning the other moiety. • Maesyfelin Chambered Tomb, St Lythans
Great Archaeological Sites in the Vale of Glamorgan 1. MAESYFELIN CHAMBERED TOMB, ST LYTHANS Although there had been Mesolithic hunter-gatherers in the Vale for millennia, the introduction of farming in the Neolithic period led to a new relationship between the land and the people who lived in it. The need to stay in one place long enough to plant seeds, look after the growing crops and bring in the harvest resulted in the creation of permanent settlements, and although very few Neolithic houses have been discovered so far in Wales do have the houses built in stone for the dead. These are known as chambered tombs. One chambered tomb stands in the valley of the River Waycock near Maesyfelin Farm outside the village of St Lythans (ST 1009 7230), from which it takes two of the names it is known by. The other is Gwal y Filiast – ‘the kennel of the greyhound bitch’, a name also given to another chambered tomb in Carmarthenshire. A large capstone perches on top of three megalithic uprights which form three sides of a short rectangle, all of the local mudstone. The other side is open. Originally this chamber stood within the eastern end of a long mound which extended westwards behind the upright that closes it off at the back, but very little now remains. There is however enough left to show that a shallow forecourt created a recess at the mound’s eastern end in front of the chamber. Although this tomb has never been properly excavated, human remains and pottery were found in 1875 in the forecourt area, presumably lying where they had been cleared out of the chamber.

  • Coin Register 2006
COIN REGISTER 2006 EDITED BY MARTIN ALLEN, PHILIP DE JERSEY AND IAN LEINS THE Coin Register provides a platform for the publication of unusual and remarkable single coin finds from Britain and Ireland. All Celtic, pre-conquest Roman, Roman silver prior to AD 64, Roman gold and late Roman silver coins from the fourth century onwards are welcomed, as are Anglo-Saxon, Norman or Plantagenet coins and their continental contemporaries (down to and including the Cross-and-Crosslets (Tealby) type of Henry II), and most later medieval continental coins. However, coins outside these categories will still be considered for their numismatic inter- est. As always, the essential criterion for inclusion will be that the coin is new, by virtue of either being newly found or (if previously discovered) being hitherto unpublished. Single finds from archaeological excavations may be included if it seems that there would otherwise be a consider- able delay in publication. The listing of Celtic coins in the Coin Register is earned out in association with the Celtic Coin Index at the Institute of Archaeology, Oxford (http://web.arch.ox.ac.uk/coins/ccindex.htm). Celtic material should therefore be sent in the first instance to Dr Philip de Jersey, Institute of Archaeology, 36 Beaumont Street, Oxford 0X1 2PG ([email protected]). Finds of Greek and Roman coins should be notified to Ian Leins, Finds Adviser, Iron Age and Roman coins, Portable Antiquities Scheme, c/o Department of Coins and Medals, British Museum, London WC1B 3DG (,[email protected]). Other material should be sent to Dr Martin Allen, Department of Coins and Medals, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge CB2 1RB ([email protected]).
