If I have erred by endeavouring to set these Memories in too simple a style it is not because I have not appreciated seriously enough the privilege of meeting such great personalities as King Edward VII., W. E. Gladstone, H. M. Stanley, Joseph Chamberlain, Lord Russell of Killowen, Charles Stewart Parnell, Mark Twain, and others, but, on the contrary, because I have felt that such names, being already set in the Temple of Time, required no elaborate phrases of mine to add to their glory. I make this statement in all humbleness, well realising that the particular talent for such work " " was given me for some purpose —as such I treated the " gift," and endeavoured to return it as one would a loan—if possible increased in value. No one deplores more than I do that my success has been followed by many imitators who have little aptitude or knowledge for occult studies of any kind, and so have since brought discredit on such pursuits. Some have gone so far as even to copy the name I took for my nom de guerre, but this alone is sufficient to prove that, xiii Generated for deveneyjp (University of Chicago) on 2015-10-17 20:18 GMT / http://hdl.handle.net/2027/hvd.32044012994307 / GMT 20:18 2015-10-17 on Chicago) of (University deveneyjp for Generated http://www.hathitrust.org/access_use#pd-us-google / Google-digitized States, United the in Domain Public Foreword as they have not had enough brains to make a name for themselves, they cannot have the requisite mental power to proceed far in occult studies. Excellence in any branch of occultism is attained by the same effort it is necessary to make in order to succeed in any other art, science, or profession. To paint pictures, the artist must first have the necessary temperament, the patience to study for years, and the courage to withstand the thousand and one disappointments that assail him on every side. In science it is the same. Yet think what study with the proper temperament can produce ! To the botanist the simplest leaf may tell the story of the tree, or to the zoologist the smallest frag ment of a bone may tell the history of a race.

Contributing Institution: William Andrews Clark Memorial Library Title: Oscar Wilde and his Literary Circle Collection: Wildeiana Creator: William Andrews Clark Memorial Library Identifier/Call Number: MS.Wildeiana Physical Description: 19 Linear Feet27 boxes Date (inclusive): 1858-1998 Abstract: This finding aid describes a wide-ranging collection of material relating to Oscar Wilde and to his literary and artistic circle in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Great Britain. Clark Library. Language of Material: English . Provenance William Andrews Clark, Jr. acquired the nucleus of the Clark Library's Oscar Wilde collection from Dulau and Company, London, in 1929. Most of the Dulau material had been in the possession of Robert B. Ross (Oscar Wilde's literary executor), Christopher S. Millard (a.k.a. Stuart Mason, the Wilde bibliographer), and Vyvyan B. Holland (Wilde's only surviving son). Since 1929, the Clark Library has steadily purchased important new material and in the year 2000, the collection was estimated to contain over 65,000 items. It appears that large segments of the Wildeiana collection were likely originally part of the collection assembled by Wilde bibliographer Christopher Millard. The actual date the Clark acquired these materials is unknown and any documentation about the source of these items has been lost.

VERY FAITHFULLY YOURS, CHEIRO PALMISTRY FOR ALL CONTAINING NEW INFORMATION ON THE STUDY OF THE HAND NEVER BEFORE PUBLISHED BY CHEIRO WITH A PREFACE TO AMERICAN READERS AND WITH UPWARDS OF SIXTY ILLUSTRATIONS 1916 PREFACE TO THE AMERICAN EDITION There is no country in the world where the "study of character" is more indulged in than in the United States of America. During my many visits there I could not help remarking how even the "hardest headed" business men used any form of this study that they could get hold of to help them in their business dealings with other men and also in endeavouring to ascertain the character of their clerks and employees. In looking over the records of my career I find that in the course of my visits to America I gave private lessons to the heads of two hundred and seventy business establishments in New York, one hundred and thirty-five in Boston, and three hundred and forty-two in Chicago. All these men were large employers of labour and what they principally wanted was, to have some help beyond that of their own judgment in dealing with those with whom they came in contact in the regular course of their business careers. In no other country did I find the same interest taken in the study of character from a practical standpoint. It is for this reason that I write a special Preface for this Edition, believing as I do that my American[Pg iv] readers will appreciate the added information I may be able to give regarding the obtaining by a mere glance at a hand a quick grasp of the leading characteristics of the persons with whom they are thrown into contact, or for whatever reason they choose to make use of this study.

To oddBy lynleefWhen I first started reading this book the author was upbeat and positive and then as the pages went on I saw a very critical, blunt individual that did not have very flexible thinking. Some of the things this Cheiro said were just so cold. At one point he stated that if the sun line was on it's own mount with not connection to any line, that success would come so late in life it wouldn't even be worth having. REALLY? Well that positive and cheery! Another instant he stated that Even if you had the the best sun line if you had a hollow hand it wouldn't do you any good! His exact words were "On a hollow hand, the line of Sun loses all power and it's promises are never fulfilled" REALLY? So every one with a "hollow hand" your life will be crap! There were many more digs and cruel criticism else wear. Also there were things he stated that were just not true, things he said that should be a certain way in my life that just weren't.

Every numerologist should at least be open to explore this ancient method. The context is derived from a period where omens and fatalistic events were the cornerstone but the information needs to be taken in modern context. Modern times allow for "accidents" and difficult situations and Cheiro does a good job giving the good and the bad which is necessary to understand the duality of numbers. I also find the interpretations and techniques centered more around one's karmic destiny than one's psychological breakdown and because of it I use it in conjunction with the Pythagorean techniques.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
