No part of this book may be distributed, posted, or reproduced in any form by digital or mechanical means without prior written permission of the publisher. CHAPTER 1 Fair Ball! Why Adjustments Are Needed King Arthur’s quest for it in the Middle Ages became a large part of his legend. Monty Python and Indiana Jones launched their searches in popular 1974 and 1989 movies. The mythic quest for the Holy Grail, the name given in Western tradition to the chal- ice used by Jesus Christ at his Passover meal the night before his death, is now often a metaphor for a quintessential search. In the illustrious history of baseball, the “holy grail” is a ranking of each player’s overall value on the baseball diamond. Because player skills are multifaceted, it is not clear that such a ranking is possible. In comparing two players, you see that one hits home runs much better, whereas the other gets on base more often, is faster on the base paths, and is a better fielder. So which player should rank higher? In Baseball’s All-Time Best Hitters, I identified which players were best at getting a hit in a given at-bat, calling them the best hitters. Many reviewers either disapproved of or failed to note my definition of “best hitter.” Although frequently used in base- ball writings, the terms “good hitter” or best hitter are rarely defined. In a July 1997 Sports Illustrated article, Tom Verducci called Tony Gwynn “the best hitter since Ted Williams” while considering only batting average.

The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, July 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe College lefties drafted by Red Sox have small sample sizes but big hopes Julian McWilliams There was natural anxiety for players entering this year’s Major League Baseball draft. Their 2020 high school or college seasons had been cut short or canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They lost that chance at increasing their individual stock, and furthermore, the draft had been reduced to just five rounds. Lefthanders Shane Drohan and Jeremy Wu-Yelland felt some of that anxiety. The two were in their junior years of college. Drohan attended Florida State and Wu-Yelland played at the University of Hawaii. There was a chance both could have gone undrafted and thus would have been tasked with the tough decision of signing a free agent deal capped at $20,000 or returning to school for their senior year. “I didn’t know if I was going to get drafted,” Wu-Yelland said in a phone interview. “My agent was kind of telling me that it might happen, it might not. Just be ready for anything.” Said Drohan, “I knew the scouting report on me was I have the stuff to shoot up on draft boards but I haven’t really put it together yet. I felt like I was doing that this year and then once [the season] got shut down, that definitely played into the stress of it, like, ‘Did I show enough?’ ” As it turned out, both players showed enough. The Red Sox selected Wu-Yelland in the fourth round and Drohan in the fifth.

  • Banquet of Champions Sponsorship Opportunity
Banquet of Champions Sponsorship Opportunity This August, 10-year-old baseball players from across America will descend upon Hammond for the Cal Ripken World Series at the Hammond Optimist Sports Complex. In addition to a week of top-notch HAMMOND, INDIANA youth baseball coming to our Region, these special young athletes will be AUGUST 4-12, 2017 recognized in grand style at the Banquet of Champions, to be held the evening of Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017, at the Halls of St. George in Schererville. In addition to being recognized for their own accomplishments by advancing to the World Series, players from the 10 participating teams will have the thrill of hearing from a former Major League World Series champion, Munster’s own Hal Morris. A rookie member of the 1990 Cincinnati Reds World Series champions, Morris was a first baseman who played in 10 seasons with the Reds and also saw action with the New York Yankees, Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers. Morris also played in the College World Series for the University of Michigan, and knows how special it is for these young ballplayers to be playing in their own World Series. In his 1990 World Series championship season, Morris hit .340 on the year, which, at the time, was the third-highest batting average by a rookie in 50 years. His sacrifice fly in Game 4 turned out to be the series-winning RBI. He retired from playing in 2000 with a career batting average of .304. From 2012 until 2016, he was the director of professional scouting for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The Boston Red Sox Monday, August 21, 2017 * The Boston Globe The pick here is Andrew Benintendi over Aaron Judge Dan Shaughnessy Aaron Judge vs. Andrew Benintendi. Forget 2017 American League Rookie of the Year. I’m asking . which guy would you rather have on your team for the next 15 seasons? We love these Yankee-Red Sox mano-a-manos. It’s as old as the rivalry itself. Joe DiMagggio came to the bigs in 1936. Ted Williams burst on the scene three years later. Throughout the 1940s, it was a raging argument. We were even led to believe that the respective owners of the Sox and Yankees once made a late-night swap while in a drunken haze. The alleged trade was called off by dawn’s early light. Remember when the Sox had Carlton Fisk and the Yanks had Thurman Munson? New York’s grumpy catcher was a league MVP before his career was tragically cut short when he crashed his plane in 1979. Fisk went on to become a Hall of Famer. Don Mattingly and Wade Boggs were rivals of sorts in the 1980s and who can forget those early years of this new century when Nomar Garciaparra vs. Derek Jeter was a real debate. Now we have Judge and Benintendi. Big Poison and Little Poison. It’s 6 feet 7 inches and 282 pounds vs. 5-10 and 170. It’s not about Rookie of the Year anymore. Even though he is playing as badly as anyone can play at the moment, Judge pretty much retired the rookie trophy with his ridiculous first half.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Terry Melia – 949-831-3700, [email protected] HONUS WAGNER 1909-11 T206 CARD AND HIS PERSONAL SAFE TO BE AUCTIONED AS PART OF SCP AUCTIONS’ ‘FALL PREMIER’ Auction of Wagner’s T206 Card and Safe Winds Down Saturday, Dec. 6 Laguna Niguel, Calif. (Dec. 3, 2014) – SCP Auctions’ “Fall Premier” online auction ends this Saturday, Dec. 6, at www.scpauctions.com. It features more than 1,150 lots including the coveted Chesapeake Honus Wagner 1909-11 T206 card and a small but highly significant group of Jackie Robinson related memorabilia including his spectacular Hillerich & Bradsby Model S100 ash bat, one of only two Robinson game-used bats that can be definitively documented as having been used during his 1949 MVP season. Also included is Wagner’s personal safe which was part of Wagner's estate collection received directly from the Wagner family's home in Carnegie, Pa. and sold by SCP Auctions in 2003 on behalf of Leslie Blair Wagner (Honus’s granddaughter). Can you imagine a more ideal place to store your prized T206 Honus Wagner card? For decades, Honus Wagner himself stored some his most important possessions in this floor safe. The safe, manufactured specially for Wagner by the F.L. Norton Safe Co. of Pittsburgh, Pa., dates from the turn-of-the-century. Its dimensions are 25" high by 16"wide by 17"deep and weighs about 250 pounds. Wagner's name "J.H. Wagner" is stenciled across to top in gold paint. A decorative border is stenciled around the perimeter of the door, which also bears the manufacturers markings below the dial.
