Thomson said a couple of years ago sick- ness in the farm’s herd required a few horses to be isolated and retained. In the case of Geez Joe, it was other things that kept him from selling as a yearling. “He was originally slated for the Lexington sale,” said Win- bak farm manager Garrett Bell. “That was not meant to be. He was constantly in our hospital barn for cuts, scrapes and swollen joints. He was a ridgling and had OCD surgery. One of his many wounds got infected and was not healing in his left hind fetlock. That finally started to heal and we turned him out in a small round pen and he got cast and got his left hind fetlock caught, again, swollen and opened up the wound. Thankfully, nothing was ever real serious, just su- perficial and ugly. So we pulled him from the sale and let him heal.” Thomson is philosophical about the roller-coaster ride of being a breeder. “We sell over 200 yearlings each year and there are going to be horses that we don’t sell because they were sick or something happened to them like an injury,” said Thomson. “But the object of the game is to sell.” Geez Joe is a 4-year-old gelded son of Roll With Joe and is the 11th foal of Beach Bretta, a full sister to the stakes winner Sands A Flyin. The horse received his name be- cause he is a son of Roll With Joe (named for Thomson), with JoAnn adding the “Geez” because she is always saying, “Geez Joe.” HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 5 of 19 December 21, 2018 www.harnessracing.com Management Changes At Hanover; there but went to boarding school in Wisconsin before Williams Named President, CEO going to college in Virginia.
