Boli- var), Fruhstorferiola okinawaensis (Shiraki) (2n d=21, NF =21), and Sinopodisma punctata Mist- shenko (2nd = 21, all chromosomes are two-armed) were studied. Cytogenetic similarities and differ- ences between particular species are discussed using the C-banding method. Key words Podisminae grasshoppers, Chromosome, Karyotype, C-banding. Karyotypes of 8 species of grasshopper belonging to the subfamily Podisminae have been de- scribed from Japan (Inoue 1985). However, the C-banding technique was not commonly used in the cytogenetic studies of Japanese Podisminae. Nevertheless, it has been used extensively with Or- thoptera to discriminate individual chromosomes and their behaviour during meiosis (Gosalvez et al. 1997). The application of this technique has produced new cytogenetic markers for comparative karyology of Podisminae (Westerman and Hewitt 1985, Bugrov et al. 1994, Bugrov 1995, Bugrov and Sergeev 1997). Moreover, the C-banding method gives information about the rates and features of chromosome evolution in groups of closely related species (Cabrero and Camacho 1986). -
Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae
Cytologia 44: 693-714, 1979 Chromosome Systems in the North American Decticinae' with Reference to Robertsonian Changes (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) Norihiro Ueshima1 and D. C. Rentz2 Received January 17, 1978 Differences of chromosome numbers and forms in closely related groups are of great interest as far as chromosome evolution is concerned. However, karyotypes in related groups are sometimes relatively constant, as in grasshopers of the family Acrididae. In the shield-backed katydids (Tettigoniidae) of the subfamily Decticinae, five Old World genera (Decticus, Gampsocleis,Metrioptera, Pholidoptera, and Platycleis) have been recorded as having 2n=30+X in the male (John and Hewitt 1968, White 1973). However, an interesting exception is Lanciana from Australia, described as having 2n=24+X (Ferreira 1969). All above have rod-shaped chromosomes, except for one species, Metrioptera saus sureana (John and Hewitt 1968). The North American Decticinae differ from the Old World genera in having one or more pairs of metacentric chromosomes. McClung (1902, 1905 and 1914) reported 2n=33 in Anabrus sp., with a pair of metacentric autosomes and a sex chromosome of multiple configuration, but White et al. (1967) suggested that its chromosome number was 2n=32 or 34, rather than 33, with a neo-XY sex determining mechanism. Davis (1908) reported 29 chromosomes in Steiroxys trilineata, with a pair of metacentric autosomes. White (1941) investigated Atlanticus pachymerus and showed 2n=24+X, with two pairs of metacentric autosomes and a metacentric X-chromosome. The metacentric autosomes in those species are considered to have arisen by centric fusion (White 1973, John and Hewitt 1968). In the Old World Metrioptera saussureana, John and Hewitt (1968) reported 2n=28+X with a pair of metacentric autosomes, which believed had arisen by centric fusion. -

Since then Otte (2012) and Hill (In press) have described seven and two new species of Melanoplus from the region respectively. As part of an ongoing survey of the grasshopper fauna of the southeastern United States, increasingly refined species distribution information is being compiled. In the process, noteworthy collections have been made representing the first documentation of nine species for the first time from five states. These new state records are reported below. Feeding of Nestling and Fledgling Eastern Bluebirds
FEEDING OF NESTLING AND FLEDGLING EASTERN BLUEBIRDS BENEDICT C. PINKOWSKI Several workers (Forbes 1903, Beal 1915, Cottam and Knappen 1939, Davison 1962) have described the prey consumed by adult Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis). No definitive studies, however, have been done on the diet of nestling and fledgling bluebirds. In this paper I summarize the behavior of Eastern Bluebirds feeding young, describe the diet of nestling and fledgling bluebirds, and discuss the relationship between the foraging tactics of bluebirds (Goldman 1975, Pinkowski 1977) and types of prey fed to the young. METHODS Observations were made of Eastern Bluebirds nesting in nest boxes in Macomb Co., Michigan from 1971 to 1973. Nest sites were located in old fields adjacent to oak (QUercUs sp.) woodlands. Details of the study area are published elsewhere (Pinkowski 1975, 1976a). Relevant aspects of bluebird foraging were dealt with in a companion paper (Pinkowski 1977). I sampled 2503 nestling foods at 45 nests in 20 different nest sites and 275 fledgling foods for 12 different broods. Animal foods were grouped into 23 taxonomic categories (often families, occasionally orders or genera). I note individual prey species if these appeared important and follow Cantrall (1968) and Kaston (1948) in assigning names of various Orthopterans and spiders, respectively. Nestling diet was sampled in part by using throat collars made from pipe-cleaners or heavy thread to prevent the young from swallowing food. The collars did not appear to harm the nestlings. Nests being sampled were checked every 20 to 30 min and young were not deprived of food for more than 1.5 to 2.5 h per day. -
New Canadian and Ontario Orthopteroid Records, and an Updated Checklist of the Orthoptera of Ontario

Ont. 145: 61–76 The following seven orthopteroid taxa are recorded from Canada for the first time: Anaxipha species 1, Cyrtoxipha gundlachi Saussure, Chloroscirtus forcipatus (Brunner von Wattenwyl), Neoconocephalus exiliscanorus (Davis), Camptonotus carolinensis (Gerstaeker), Scapteriscus borellii Linnaeus, and Melanoplus punctulatus griseus (Thomas). One further species, Neoconocephalus retusus (Scudder) is recorded from Ontario for the first time. An updated checklist of the orthopteroids of Ontario is provided, along with notes on changes in nomenclature. Published December 2014 Introduction Vickery and Kevan (1985) and Vickery and Scudder (1987) reviewed and listed the orthopteroid species known from Canada and Alaska, including 141 species from Ontario. A further 15 species have been recorded from Ontario since then (Skevington et al. 2001, Marshall et al. 2004, Paiero et al. 2010) and we here add another eight species or subspecies, of which seven are also new Canadian records. Notes on several significant provincial range extensions also are given, including two species originally recorded from Ontario on bugguide.net. Voucher specimens examined here are deposited in the University of Guelph Insect Collection (DEBU), unless otherwise noted. Manley Department of Entomology, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan 48823 INTRODUCTION The Biology and Feeding behavior of Atlanticus testaceus (scudder) has received considerable attention by Gangwere (1966, 1967). While studying summer feeding of the adult Atlanticus testaceus in a Northern Michigan Jack Pine forest on the seeds of Melampyrum lineare Desr. (Scrophulariaceae), some new observations which supplement published information were made by the author. MATERIALS AND METHODS Adult males and females were hand collected from the forest floor between the hours of 10:OO PM and 12:OO midnight during the months of August and early September. They were placed in plastic containers overnight. -

Gangwere Department of Biology, Wayne State University Several reports deal in part with the systematics, distribution, or habits of one or another of the shield-backedkatydids of the orthopteran genus Atlanticus. Included are Blatchley (1920), C antrall (1943),C audell (1907), Davis (1893), Hebard (1934), McNeill (1891), Rehn and Hebard (1916), and Scudder (1894). One species of the genus, A. testaceus (Scudder), is found commonly throughout Michigan and has interesting habits. As the species' feeding behavior was poorly understood, the author undertook an investigation dealing with that subject. The results are in press. During the course of that study much information was obtained on certain non-feeding aspects of the species' behavior. -

Cantrall Museum of Zoology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104 The only publication to date dealing exclusively with the Orthoptera and Dermaptera of Michigan is that of Pettit and McDaniel (1918). In the fifty years since their paper, several factors have combined to increase by nearly one-third the number of orthopterous and dermapterous taxa known for the state. These have been better understanding of the taxonomy of some groups, more extensive collecting, the establishment over the past several years of five advents, and the unquestioned northerly extension during the past two or three decades of the ranges of several species previously known to occur to the south in Ohio and Indiana. -
