Year in Review | 2017 Portland Youthbuilders Provides a 2017 Highlights and Accomplishments Life-Changing Opportunity for Youth to Move Permanently out of Poverty Year in Review | 2017 Portland YouthBuilders provides a 2017 Highlights and Accomplishments life-changing opportunity for youth to move permanently out of poverty. 108 PYB students are determined, STUDENTS PLACED IN JOBS, COLLEGE, OR APPRENTICESHIPS hopeful, and brave young people who are motivated to become 92 self-sufficient and serve their STUDENTS IMPROVED ACADEMIC SKILLS community. 3 HOUSES BUILT FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES 415 COMPUTERS REFURBISHED AND REDISTRIBUTED INTO THE COMMUNITY PYB is deeply committed to serving students within a framework of equity and social justice. 100 SENIOR CITIZENS LEARNED TECH SKILLS We fill an educational void for 17-24 year olds FROM PYB STUDENTS who have been unable to finish high school and enter a meaningful career path. Our students are highly motivated but arrive at our doors 17,164 without the education, skills, or structure HOURS OF SERVICE PROVIDED TO OUR needed to rise out of poverty. LOCAL AREA NOTEWORTHY MOMENTS Deeper commitment to equity In 2017, PYB dedicated a full year toward the goal of educating our staff and board on issues regarding diversity and inclusion. Learning about the issues is just the beginning; PYB is now focusing much of its energy to eliminating the existing achievement gaps within our racially diverse student body. Planning for renovations Since purchasing our current building in 2001 we have significantly expanded our services for youth in the community, which has strained the physical capacity of our building. In 2017, PYB took the first steps towards launching a capital campaign to renovate our building in order to create more usable PYB PROGRAMS space and improve functionality. Once complete, our renovated school will better serve existing Academics students and increase the number of students that Equity PYB can serve in the future. Counseling Vocational training Recognition Leadership Once again, PYB was honored by Oregon Business Job readiness magazine as one of the 100 Best Nonprofits and 100 Long term support Best Green Companies in Oregon. WHAT MAKES PYB WORK? EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Jill Walters PYB emphasizes positive staff/student relationships, high personal and professional standards, real-world BOARD OF DIRECTORS job experience, small class sizes, and strong community partnerships. Steve Rudman, President Dave Anolik, Vice President WHO WE SERVE Molly Mink Liston, Vice President Rob Prasch, Treasurer Each year, PYB serves approximately 200 low-income youth Michael Burch between the ages of 17-24, all of whom have dropped out of John Gardner high school.
