Capital Conference 2019 September 26 CAPITAL CONFERENCE SEPTEMBER 26 2019 XFINITY LIVE! PRESENTED BY: HOSTED BY: Welcome CAPITAL CONFERENCE 2019 Welcome CAPITAL CONFERENCE 2019 September 26 | Xfinity Live! September 26, 2019 Welcome to the 2019 Philadelphia Alliance for Capital and Technologies’ (PACT) Capital Conference! Duane Morris is delighted to welcome you to the 26th PACT Capital Conference. Our law firm provides innovative solutions to today’s multifaceted legal and business challenges through the collegial and collaborative culture of our more than 800 attorneys in offices across the United States and internationally, including right here in our hometown of Philadelphia. This year’s theme, “Building equity; fueling success,” is a nod to the evidence that shows that businesses with greater diversity at the executive and board levels fuel greater success and deliver more equity to shareholders. With our theme in mind, we reached out to more diverse investors and entrepreneurs than ever before, including a lioness who joins this year’s “Lion’s Den.” The sponsors and volunteers for this year’s conference have attracted the most diverse leaders in our venture community to date to discuss the latest trends and best practices within healthcare, technology and early stage ventures. New this year is a panel aimed at investors. Of course, we’ll also hear from our keynote speaker, former Philadelphia Eagles (and Villanova Wildcat) running back Brian Westbrook. Now, at SeventySix Capital’s Athlete Venture Group, Brian works with athletes to invest, learn, and work directly with top sports tech startups and entrepreneurs. We are excited for this year’s “Lion’s Den,” which allows early stage companies the chance to pitch to angel investors eager to invest in high-potential enterprises on the spot. More than $850K was awarded by last year’s lions alone! Joining us in the Den this year are these laudable lions: • David Adelman, CEO, Campus Apartments, Lead Director, Wheels UP • Jonathan A. Brassington, CEO, Capgemini Invent NA • Anthony Bucci, Founder and Former CEO of RevZilla.com, Angel Investor and Advisor • Katherine O’Neill, Angel Investor, Co-Founder Broad Street Angels, Jumpstart NJ Angel Network • Richard Vague, Managing Partner, Gabriel Investments On behalf of Duane Morris, our fellow sponsors, PACT committee members, and the entire PACT community, we are excited to welcome you to this dynamic event. • State Strategies to Promote Angel Investment for Economic Growth*
Contact: Chris Hayter, Program Director, Economic Development Social, Economic, and Workforce Programs Division 202/624-7833 February 14, 2008 State Strategies to Promote Angel Investment for Economic Growth* Executive Summary Governors are increasingly interested in entrepreneurship because of its key role in driving business innovation. While entrepreneurs face several common challenges, including developing business acumen and making connections with experts and mentors, often their greatest challenge is raising capital. Entrepreneurs’ emerging technologies are frequently viewed as too risky for banks, private equity firms and venture capitalists, yet many fledgling companies require more investment to grow than can be raised from friends and family. Angel investors are increasingly stepping in to fill this gap. Angel investors are wealthy individuals with business or technology backgrounds who provide entrepreneurs with capital, connections, and guidance. They provide early-stage financing in a space once occupied by venture capitalists, who now invest primarily in larger deals and more mature companies. Individual angels invest between $5,000 and $100,000 in local and regional ventures, primarily in high-technology sectors, giving their investments local impact. In the past decade, many angel investors have formed and joined groups because investing through groups offers several advantages, most notably a large and more diverse portfolio, access to expertise, and higher deal flow. States increasingly recognize the value of angel investments and are adopting policies to promote them. Some have created statewide networks to assist the formation of angel groups, link angel groups to share best practices, and help groups invest together in companies that need more funding than a single group can offer.
