Let your friends and neighbors know! Viewing Schedule (Mark your calendar!) “Fall Kick Off” Join host Meredith Vieira in the search for America’s best-loved novel. Virtual Toolkit: Information about the book list, the quiz and selection information can be found on www.rmpbs.org/greatamericanread. Share stories with Susan Barber [email protected]

Here’s what volunteers can do: 1. Spread the word about the Great American Read (GAR) list of books with your friends, family and colleagues via social networks, email, word of mouth. Link your friends to RMPBS Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and share the webpage www.rmpbs.org/greatamericanread and let Susan Barber know what you are doing.

2. Have fun with your network taking the GAR quiz and GAR Bingo (win a Kindle) www.rmpbs.org/greatamericanread and competing with friends and colleagues (and business associates) to see who has read the most number of books on the list. 3. Set up a competition between employees of your organization/business with another organization/business (or with other book groups) to see who can first reach the goal of reading all 100 books by September. Contact Susan Barber [email protected] with the results! 4. Are you in a book group or know of different book groups? Send Susan Barber [email protected] contact information/name/address/email for your book group so that we can send you additional information and some fun things! Love to publish this list (without contact information—of course) in the Volunteer Bulletin. 5. Talk with your local libraries and bookstores to provide information about GAR and encourage them to create a display with some of the GAR books. 6. Kids in school? Share the list and information with the teachers. GAR could certainly provide reading for students! 7. Organize “watch-parties” for the Fall series.

Thanks to RMPBS Volunteers on the Western Slope

Congratulations to all the folks in Grand Junction who helped to make this year’s Kids Fun Fest the most successful to date – we had assistance from new volunteers to our organization, and saw our best turnout ever of booths and participants. Each booth offered a unique, fun, and educational activity for the kids. The dance, martial arts, and musical performances were wonderful. The entire event, from setup to takedown, was operated smoothly, and we were all able to focus on speaking with the participants and booth sponsors and truly enjoying the day.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for their assistance during the Western Slope Kids Fun Fest! Patricia Amadeo helped hang up posters, and Chriss Secrest and Dan Flenniken staffed the Rocky Mountain PBS booth during the event. Thanks to our volunteers from Caprock Academy for wearing the Alpha Pig and Clifford costumes! And finally, a special thank you to our intern, Ana Aguinada, and her wonderful family for their assistance setting up, executing, and cleaning up after the event. The 2018 Western Slope Kids Fun Fest had our largest turn out to date and was a resounding success, all due to the support of our volunteers. Thank you!

Thanks to volunteer Bliss Bruen and the Durango Public Library for organizing the Great American Read book discussion on August 8th.

Volunteer Reminder: Volunteers: Please note that if you sign in on the computer at the Denver station but don't sign out, the computer only gives you credit for 3 hours. Not only do you cheat yourselves out of time, but the station also. Please send an e-mail to [email protected] if you need to make a correction to your hours. In the email, include the date, time, and job assignment and we will make the adjustment. Thank you!

VOLUNTEER & STATION NEWS

Thanks to ALL the Volunteers Who Are Enjoying the Great American Read! Many volunteers are having fun participating in the Great American Read (www.rmpbs.org/greatamericanread ) . They are engaging members of their book clubs and spreading the word among their social networks and neighborhood libraries. It’s not too late for other volunteers to join in. See “Virtual Volunteering” under “Volunteer Opportunities” for different ideas for volunteer participation and to view the Fall broadcast schedule for The Great American Read series and the announcement of America’s favorite book.

Volunteer Spotlight: Kate Mazzotta and the Importance of Public Media Content Kate is new to Denver and Rocky Mountain . In her past career as a journalist, she worked for the BBC in England and Ireland. She currently works in public relations for the Gathering Place (https://tgpdenver.org/ ), the only daytime drop-in center in metropolitan Denver that serves women, their children, and transgender individuals who are experiencing poverty, many of whom are also experiencing homelessness. We at RMPBS thank Kate for her article and hope that she will continue to write for the Volunteer Bulletin. We look forward to her participation on the Volunteer Advisory Team.

It was while watching the Insight program, “How red flag laws could help families grappling with guns and mental illness,” that I was reminded of the unique power of public media. Having formally worked as a journalist, there is no small part of me that regrets the callous nature I assumed in my work, often having to report but then forget, because what I had to say was no longer relevant to the current cycle. As a breaking news reporter, I watched it happen: an attack, a brief conversation, and then we forget— by design— until the next major tragedy.

But public media, especially local media, doesn’t do that. Rather, it seeks to truly investigate the issues most pressing to its community. In the past few years, guns and mental illness have reentered the conversation for fleeting moments, always in the wake of another mass tragedy. But in this Insight program, I see tragedy but also hope, and a community looking for proactive solutions even when we as a nation aren’t talking about it. Well deserved, the Insight program was broadcast on PBS Newshour; a conversation we had comfortably forgotten was thrust back into the spotlight. For this reason, I see public media as the national conscience, there to remind us of the topics most pressing to our communities and our country.

I am volunteering for RMPBS because, as this past month’s Insight program proved, there is nothing more powerful than the spark of conversation that public media creates. Raised in Orlando, Florida, I worked as a journalist in the United Kingdom before changing careers to marketing. I am thrilled to make a new home for myself in Denver with my boyfriend and two cats. I work in communications for The Gathering Place. It is truly my honour and pleasure to continue to support public media in my new city.

Rocky Mountain Public Media Celebrates!

RMPBS is thrilled to report that two segments from Insight with John Ferrugia were recently featured on the PBS NewsHour! On July 9, NewsHour ran our report on child pornography. Then on August 7, NewsHour featured our piece on red flag laws and how they might help families grappling with the issue of guns and mental illness.

The Public Television Major Market Group (PTMMG) recently elected Amanda Mountain to their board.

Danna Luo was asked to join in the PTMMG Emerging Leaders program, a year-long mentorship opportunity within the MMG system. Danna is one of 5 emerging leaders for the 2019 program.

As the Chief Financial Officer of Rocky Mountain Public Media (RMPM), Danna Luo oversees all financial and accounting aspects for Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO Jazz. She came to RMPM with 10 years of experience in not-for-profit accounting having served in several notable arts & cultural organizations in Denver and surrounding areas. Prior to RMPM, Danna was the Director of Finance for the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities where she led the Center’s financial and accounting transition from city leadership to private not-for-profit governance. Danna has her MBA and MS Accounting from the University of Colorado – Denver. As RMPM’s Chief Financial Officer, she enjoys fulfilling its mission of strengthening the civic fabric of Colorado and serving the public media audiences of Colorado.

Congratulations to Lori Jane Gliha, who is among the business, civic and other community leaders nominated to attend the inaugural Citizens Academy of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Lori Jane will get an inside look at how the ATF investigates firearms, explosives, arson, and illegal firearm trafficking. The six-week academy starts Sept. 13.

Arts District Refresh RMPBS is thrilled that Michael Gadlin will be joining Kate Perdoni to co-host Arts District this fall! Kate and Michael have a great dynamic and will bring new energy to the show. Over the next few weeks, RMPBS will be doing an Arts District re-boot with some fun interstitials featuring the new co-hosts, so the audience can get to know them a bit ahead of the season launch October 4.

Colorado Experience Cheers to Beer Screenings are taking place across the state in the coming month- in Colorado Springs on September 12 at Ivywild School, in Denver on September 17 at Blue Moon Brewing Company in RiNo, in Durango on September 19 at Ska Brewery, and in Grand Junction on September 20 at Edgewater Brewery. It's a great new season on Colorado Experience.

TIDBITS OF HISTORY FROM THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN PUBLIC MEDIA ARCHIVES

By Laura Sampson | Founder, Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) since 2000

Volunteering for Rocky Mountain Public Media is a true pleasure for numerous reasons. The volunteer opportunities are fun, challenging, fulfilling and provide a delightful means to meet staff and fellow members within the community that share your passion for public broadcasting.

Looking back in time, we see that heartfelt appreciation for great volunteers was quite evident when KRMA-TV threw an unparalleled “Volunteer Appreciation Party” for its volunteers in 1991 that some of our longtime volunteers and staff may still recall.

On September 25, 1991, the Denver InterPlaza at 555 S. Broadway was transformed into the “Flying Six Ranch House” to celebrate the hundreds of fabulous Channel Six volunteers. Records show that 550 volunteers attended!

The party was organized by volunteer, Patty Boyd, and her party-planning ranch- hand committee who worked with Coors Brewing Company, Sheplers and Miller Stockman and Evergreen Specialty to come up with a creative affair featuring western décor and food. The party theme was The Rootin’ Tootin’ Good Time Volunteer Appreciation Party.

Upon arrival, party guests were able to hitch a ride from the parking lot in a wagon pulled by two beautiful huge Percheron horses. Entering the warehouse, guests discovered a chuckwagon, a 10-foot tall golden cowboy, sarsaparilla and liquor at the bar, bales of hay, wildflowers, a jail, leather saddles and chaps plus a multi-talented band that taught volunteer guests how to line dance!

Many staff members were gussied up in western costume. Some of the staff “ladies” even dressed as dance hall girls to direct guests to the black jack and roulette gaming tables or the well- stocked bar supplied with Coors beer, of course. The party even included a western jailhouse where guests (and staff) could be “temporarily arrested” by the sheriffs and thrown into jail. Bail was optional, but Don Johnson, KRMA General Manager at the time, provided no immunity and continued his role as the consummate public broadcasting fundraiser by saying, “Well, if you don’t have a dollar, do you suppose you could find 10 people who each have a dime?”

Meanwhile, the staff dealers entertained gamblers and presented them with Channel Six goodie bags at the end of the night. Food was plentiful as Luther’s BBQ provided a scrumptious BBQ dinner for guests who’d been seated at red and white checked tableclothed tables decorated with wild flowers and candles. Each guest even received a commemorative mug to take home after the event!

To top off the fun, a live country music band blared throughout the evening with a bandleader teaching various western dance steps to eager volunteers. It was definitely an evening to remember. All volunteers were grateful for the appreciation party and were energized to volunteer even more! A roaming photographer captured the fun of the evening as shown in the photos featured within this article . . . Now, 27 years later, the volunteers of Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) have digitized and archived the event’s photos for posterity! We hope you’ve enjoyed this slice of volunteer history of Rocky Mountain Public Media. If you have any photographs or memorabilia items from this or other station events that you’re willing to donate to the archives, please contact Station’s Archived Memories, [email protected] or 303-620-5734.

If you are interested in becoming a part of the year-round volunteer effort to preserve the history of Rocky Mountain Public Media, please contact Station’s Archived Memories (SAM). Opportunities abound for volunteers to work in the SAM office or to volunteer from home. Learn more! Contact Susan Barber, Volunteer Coordinator, [email protected].
