Press Dossier 13th edition of the Carlos V European Award CARLOS European AwardV CARLOS V EUROPEAN AWARD Carlos V European Award Since its creation, the European and Ibero-american Academy of Yuste Foundation focused its activities on the promotion of culture, knowledge and training at the European level. Its name reflects both the history of the Royal Monastery of Yuste as well as its symbolic value through the figure of Charles V, the last emperor of Europe, who chose it in order to close one of the most significant chapters in European history. The European and Ibero-american Academy of Yuste Foundation created the ‘Carlos V European Award’ in order to recognize the endeavours of those persons, organizations, projects or initiatives, which through their effort and dedication have contributed to a better knowledge and dissemination of the cultural, social, scientific and historical values of Europe, and/or to the unification of the European Union. During the ceremony, the Royal Monastery of Yuste welcomes the most prominent personalities at regional, national and European level. By granting the ‘Carlos V European Award’, the European Academy of Yuste shares in the spirit of the building of a united Europe. ...Today, the supranational European project needs to overcome the skepticism in which it has been immersed for too long; to give answers to trends towards introversion, when the world is more and more open and more interdependent; and to overcome the retreating of excluding and unsupportive conceptions of coexistence in diverse and plural societies like the ones we live in... The jury also underlined the work that the Routes do fostering cooperation in research and development; enhancement of memory, history and European heritage; cultural and educational exchanges for young Europeans; contemporary cultural and artistic practice; and the cultural tourism. Likewise, the jury has considered the image and the position of Europe that the Cultural Routes project beyond the European borders and its relations with the rest of the world. The jury also highlighted that it is a project involving different actors at different levels among them governments and countries, international institutions, regions, municipalities, organizations from the civil society, associations, museums, foundations, universities, companies and thousands of citizens, including the express participation of young people. Thus the CULTURAL ITINERARIES OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE contribute in this way to the process of European integration through history, culture, heritage and active citizenship, and in addition contribute to social, cultural, economic and sustainable local, national and European development. All this makes this initiative meritorious of the Carlos V European Award. CULTURAL ITINERARIES OF THE COUnciL OF EUROPE The programme of the Cultural Itineraries of the Council of Europe was initiated in 1987 with the declaration of Santiago de Compostela, the first Cultural Itinerary of the Council of Europe. The objective of the programme is to prove, through a journey through time and space, how the heritage of the different countries and cultures of Europe contributes to a shared cultural heritage. More than 30 cultural routes provide a wide variety of educational and leisure activities for all citizens in Europe and are also key resources for responsible tourism and sustainable development. The itineraries cover a wide range of subjects, from architecture to landscape, through religion, gastronomy, intangible heritage and the main figures of European literature and music. Spain is one of the privileged stages of the programme with more than 22 cultural itineraries throughout the country. The European Route of the Emperor Charles V has been a Cultural Itinerary of the Council of Europe since 2015. Merits: - The Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe put into practice the values of the Council of Europe, human rights, cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and mutual exchange across borders and time. - They implement innovative activities and projects in five priority fields of action: cooperation in research and development; enhancement of European memory, history and heritage; cultural and educational exchanges for young Europeans; contemporary cultural and artistic practice, cultural tourism and sustainable cultural development. - Through its programme, the Council of Europe offers a model for the transnational management of culture and tourism and allows synergies between national, regional and local authorities, bringing together a wide range of associations and socio-economic actors. 7 MEMBERS OF THE JURY Members of the jury Carlos V European Award H.E.
