2:00–5:00 PM Pre-Institute: Organization Change Embassy (Concourse) Dr. Brenda Erickson It has been said that the only thing that is constant is change—so true in today’s world, our nation, the great State of Illinois, and your towns and villages. Most, if not all, your offices experience the challenges that come with these changes on a recurring basis: Changes politically and technologically, not to mention serving culturally diverse communities. This session is designed to help municipal clerks work with these challenges using a approach along with some administrative techniques. It includes small group work, time for discussion, and a question/answer period.

Year 1—Knowing Yourself and Knowing Others: Plaza 3 A Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Workshop Molly Grisham, Professional Training Consultant The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a valuable tool that gives everyone a common language for understanding the different ways people acquire meaning. It assists in improving the effectiveness of individual team members, team leaders, and the entire team. Lecture, discussion, and activities will be used during this session to increase learning about your preferences and tendencies in: dealing with others, taking in information, making decisions, and managing time and projects.

Year 2 and 3 —Simulated Society Conference Center 1 - 4 Dr. Steven Fowler A program used by groups to teach various aspects of , , and communications skills. Originally created by William A. Gamson in 1966, it is currently in its fifth edition. It provides a way for participants to better understand the problems of governing a 20th-century-style nation state society. The participants grapple with issues like economic inequality, justice, diversity, trust, power dynamics, and leadership as they negotiate their way through labor-management relations, political turmoil, and natural disasters. To be successful players must utilize basic social processes from cooperation and reward to threat and punishment. The goal of SIMSOC is to bring a deeper understanding to everyday experiences as well as social and organizational theory.

1:00 – 4:30 Year 1 and 2– Parliamentary Procedures Capitol Room Connie Deford, Parliamentarian This session will provide information on basic underlying principles of parliamentary procedure, the five classifications of motions, steps in handling motions, and rules of debate. Participants will chart the standard descriptive characteristics of ranking motions and practice handling simple amendment of words in a motion. All information is based on Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised (11th ed.).

Year 1—Basic Budgeting Plaza 3 David Erb, Molly Talkington This session provides a detailed overview of governmental budgeting. Participants will gather additional tools on how to improve their existing budget process to make it a better communication tool for their constituents.

Year 2—Diversity Training 102 Conference Center 2 Ebonie Davis, IDHR Workforce diversity is a reality in the workplace of the 21st century. This training identifies the on-going process of recognition, understanding and acceptance of the variety and complexity of people with whom we must interact. Year 3—Parliamentary Procedures Conference Center 4 Connie Deford, Parliamentarian This session will review the steps in handling motions and highlight the most commonly misused motions. Opportunities for adoption of rules of procedure for business in small boards (no more than about a dozen) and the use of a consent agenda will be examined. Participants will evaluate real-life parliamentary situations and determine what course of action should be used for each circumstance. All information is based on Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised (11th ed.).
