This work aims to further control the size, shape, and polydispersity of anisotropic silica colloids, to reduce particle size, and to provide additional mechanistic insights on a prevalent, water-in-oil emulsion synthesis method. Key findings show that the dimensions of anisotropic silica particles can be systematically varied by approximately five-fold, with a limiting minimum particle size (D ≈ 60 nm, L ≈ 300 nm) obtained from emulsions with excess polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and sodium citrate. The synthesis conditions are identified and discussed for which the emulsion composition, temperature, sonication, polymer entanglements, mixing, and other perturbations may induce or mitigate emulsion instabilities, citrate precipitation, a competing mechanism of templated growth, termination of anisotopic growth, irregular silica structures, and fiber formation. It is now safe to conclude that the amount of water absorbed by any living cell, organ or organism, is essentially dependent upon its content of hydrophilic colloids and the state of these. As proof for this mybe cited the complete analogy which exists between the laws governing the absorption of water by protoplasm and those governing the same phe- nomenon as observed in various simple colloids-more particularly the proteins-under physiological and pathological conditions.* On such a colloid-chemical basis it is now easy to account for the fairly constant amount of water held by living cells and tissues normally and so to ex- plain, for example, their so-called normal “turgor.” But under patho- logical conditions both in plants and in animals this normal degree of hydra- tion may be much increased, when we have before us the “excessive turgor” characteristic of various plant diseases, or the edema of the anintal path- ologists as this involves individual cells, organs, or the body as a whole. Edema may, in other words, be defined as a state of excessive hydration of the body colloids, while as “causes1’of the edema may be cited sub- stances or conditions which under the circumstances prevailing in liviilg protoplasm are capable of increasing its water holding powers to beyond the normal limits.

    Guidance for Cleaning Schools During COVID-19 Outbreak The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a list of disinfectants approved to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Please visit the EPA’s website for additional details. Included here is a flowchart (Page 2) from the Healthy Schools Act that can assist in determining which products to use. If the product is a disinfectant, it is exempt from the notification, posting, reporting and Integrated Pest Management requirements, but the training requirements are still in effect. Only properly trained staff should conduct the cleaning operations to be compliant with California state law. Under no circumstances should cleaning or disinfecting be assigned to students. Each product will differ in its requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE), but those requirements should be followed. For example, if the package of disinfecting wipes says that the user should wear gloves, provide disposable or reusable rubber gloves to all staff using the wipes. Hand sanitizers and antimicrobial soaps are also exempt from these regulations. This fact sheet may be useful in explaining the difference. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has released cleaning and disinfection recommendations for schools and community organizations. These recommendations can be found on the CDC website. Also available from the CDC is general guidance for schools for the prevention of infectious disease transmission.
