It begins from the Sivagiri peaks of Sundaramala in Tamilnadu. The overall length of the river is about 300km. The catchment area of periyar is around 5396 sqkm and the total annual flow is founded to be 11607 cubic meters. The Land lying on the left bank of Periyar River through a network of canal systems and controlling devices is called Periyar valley irrigation project. The project was polish offed during the year 1992. It is spreaded over Kothamangalam, Muvattupuzha, Kunnathunadu, Aluva, Kanayannur and Paravur Taluk in Ernakulam district. It is delibrated for irrigating an area of 32800 Ha. Few problems were identified in the project during our case study.     Dam disclosures The Hindu, New Delhi Dated: September 13, 2018 MORE-IN The people of Kerala have braved the worst calamity since the great flood of 1924. The floodwaters have receded from most of the affected areas barring Kuttanad. Most people have gone back to their homes from relief camps, only to find them battered beyond redemption. As the State is coming back to a “new normal” after the devastation, it is time to ponder on the reasons for the floods. Rubbishing the contention from the Opposition as well as studies from international experts that the mismanagement of dams was the primary reason for the floods, the Kerala government has stood firm that incessant rainfall in August is what caused the floods. This is in contrast to the affidavit filed in the Supreme Court by the Chief Secretary of Kerala, which cited the water released from a dam as the major cause of the floods. While there was considerable deviation in rainfall in August, it is unacceptable to put the onus only on that. In fact, according to a India Meteorological Department study, the rainfall in August was only the sixth highest in the past 143 years (1875-2017) in Kerala. Mismanagement of dams One of the major functions of dams is flood protection — to attenuate the flow of water and its impact downstream. The golden rule followed in dam management is to maintain a flood cushion (buffer) in case of unexpectedly high rainfall. Kerala has 39 major dams. Their maintenance is shared between the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and the Water Resources Department.

PG Department of Zoology and Research Centre, Mar Thoma College, Thiruvalla, India. Abstract Thattekkad bird sanctuary is the first bird sanctuary in Kerala, which owe its significance to the world famous ornithologist, Dr.Salim Ali. Amphibians formed one of the major group of vertebrates within the sanctuary, with 17 species reported by previous studies. The present study reported 9 species of Anurans belonging to 3 families, from the Human inhabited areas of the sanctuary. Of which 1 species was Endangered one and two species were found to be Near threatened ones with rest, belong to Least concern category. Anurans provide significant ecosystem services like insect-pest control agents as well as bio- indicators of healthy ecosystem. Key words: Anurans, Bio-indicators, Near-threatened, Endangeredones. INTRODUCTION Amphibians are vertebrates that lead lives both on land and water. They are poikilothermic or cold blooded animals, implying that they are affected by the temperature in their immediate surroundings. Amphibians survive best within an ambient or surrounding temperature range of 20-30°C. However, unlike birds and mammals, which are considered warm blooded or homeothermic, amphibians are unable to internally regulate their body temperature. As a result, they spend a lot of time hiding or moving about only during the cooler part of the day or in the nights. Amphibians use their skins to exchange gases (a form of respiration) and thus need to keep their skins moist.

With the advancement of economic development and the rapid growth of population, water, once regarded as abundant in Kerala is becoming more and more a scarce economic commodity. Kerala has 44 rivers out of which none are classified as major rivers. Only four are classified as medium rivers. All these rivers are rain-fed (unlike the rivers in North India that originate in the glaciers) clearly indicating that the State is entirely dependent on monsoon. Fortunately, Kerala receives two monsoons – one from the South West and other from the North East distributed between June and December. Two-thirds of the rainfall occurs during South West monsoon from June to September. Though the State is blessed with numerous lakes, ponds and brackish waters, the water scenario remains paradoxical with Kerala being a water –stressed State with poor water availability per capita. The recent landslides and devastating floods faced by Kerala emphasize the need to rebuild the state infrastructure ensuring climate resilience and better living standards. The path to be followed to achieve this goal might need change in institutional mechanisms in various sectors as well as updation in technology. Irrigation Design and Research Board with its functional areas as Design, Dam Safety, Hydrology, Investigation etc., plays a prominent role in the management of Water Resources in the State. The development of reliable and efficient Flood Forecasting and Early Warning System integrated with Reservoir Operations, access to real time hydro-meteorological and reservoir data and its processing, etc.
