Health and Welfare: Paul Hogarth is recovering after a successful knee replacement.

Jane has broken her leg! She claims that while she was walking the plank over Chinaman’s Creek in Yass and clearing debris with a rake, the Water Dragon grabbed her, knocking her into the water where she broke her leg before receiving, mud pack and leach treatments, neither of which did her any good. A more likely scenario has been hypothesised. A broken broom was discovered on the site. It has been suggested that she crashed the broom stick beyond repair and then tried to fly the rake which she also crashed ending up in Chinaman’s Creek. She was transported to Yass Hos- pital, then Canberra where she underwent successful surgery to implant a plate, screws and do a bit of bone grafting. After a week in hospital she is back at home and immobilized for about 5 to 8 weeks. Thanks to Club mem- bers for their thoughts, the visits and the flowers.

Raffle: of a battery trickle charger was won by Tim Cooper or perhaps Debra Cooper depending on intended end use.

Mid Week Run Ron Hartshorn’s Shed Wednesday 21 March

A group of eight cars and one truck headed off from the guides hall at 1.30pm and headed out through Canberra to the Barton Highway. The high number of members reflected the high level of interest in our destination.

We were welcomed by Ron whose property is just this side of Murrumbateman. As we approached the large shed our first glimpse of what was to come was the fabulous Ford Victoria pictured above. Within the shed there was a recently restored Ford truck (pictured overleaf) and a couple of hot rods together with Ron’s C6 Corvette. This part of the shed also featured a fantastic range of old signs and petrol bowsers. At the far end there was a Bar area where Ron treat- ed us to afternoon tea following an interesting tour of the shed.

In the adjoining area of the shed Ron has amassed a wide range of old station- ary engines including mobile shearing machines. Ron had an interesting story to tell about each machine. For example one large machine had come from the property owned by Sonia McMahan’s family property in South Australia and was used to draw water from the Murray for irrigation.

Ron had been warming up one of his bigger machines when we arrived with a blow torch. This took about half an hour and within a few minutes Ron had a couple of machines chugging away.

As sheds go Ron’s is definitely one of best and our thanks go to him for letting us share his passion. Thanks also to Lawrie Nock for organising the run how- ever it was disappointing that urgent business called him away on the day. We headed home at around 4pm with most of us choosing to go back via Murrum- bateman and Sutton roads,,,, a much more pleasant drive.

Modernising Old Regulators Ken Herne

If anyone is interested in converting their old mechanical style regulator to a modern electronic one then I have come across this guy in the US that can convert your old one for you.

I just received my original Delco regulator back from being converted and refitted it to the car and you can’t see any external changes. The only difference that I notice is that the AMP meter now responds instantly and accurately to what generator output is required.

The old style regulators were never too reliable even when new and take a while to warm up and are susceptible to temperature change. My Delco reg- ulator for the 56 Buick only cost me $90 USD plus freight to have converted which is cheaper than what you would pay locally for a new regulator. So if you want to have a regulator converted then send it to Bob Jeffers at Wilton Auto Electrics and have a look at his website athttp://www.wiltonae.com/home/ index.aspxapparently he can convert all makes of regulator and can even make up a regulator to suit old cars which originally did not have one.

1946 Ford Mercury Club Coupe Albert Neuss

It’s really rare to have the privilege to photograph such a rare and magnificently restored vehicle as Albert’s 1946 Mercury. The vehicle is absolutely immacu- lately restored and a testament to a long and very challenging restoration. Albert spied the Mercury on a beachside property and recognised its unique- ness, and spurred on by the knowledge that it is the same model his father once drove, bought the old girl with a vision to restore it to its former glory. That was 20 years ago!

Mercury US—The Mercury brand was envisioned by Edsel Ford when he saw an opportunity between the lower priced Ford and more upmarket Zephyr.

This gap in the ford stable was being very successfully exploited by Pontiac and Dodge, and so Edsel designed a more luxurious version of the Ford. Edsel intended to call the new car “Falcon” and make it part of the Ford stable, but in- stead named it a completely new marque for the Roman god of commerce and cleverness Mercury, messenger of the Gods. Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. Page 19

Mercury production began in 1938 and featured a 239-cid L-head V-8 of 95 horsepower, and its body was six inches wider with a four inches longer wheel- base than the equivalent Ford. Five body styles included a two-door sedan, a rare convertible sedan, and a five-passenger Club Coupe, or coupe-sedan. Over 65,800 were sold that year at a price of $916.

The Mercury shared no body panels with stablemates Ford and Lincoln, which decades later would make Albert’s restoration process even more difficult. This was a difficult time to launch a new brand, but Mercury did well until the US entered the war in 1942. Mercury was combined with Lincoln to form the Lincoln- Mercury Division of Ford in 1945.

Mercury's stretched 116-inch wheelbase added elegance to the styling, a luxurious interior with strip-type instruments, column-mounted gearlever and hydraulic brakes.

Ford Australia—During the Second World War (1939 –1945) the Ford Geelong factory manufactured landing barges, military vehicles, and ammunition. Ford Geelong built 455 Landing Craft up to 106 feet in length with a workforce that was mostly women.

Page 20 The Wheel

1

945 saw the end of World War II and the resumption of civilian vehicle production, and the Ford V8 sedan was launched by Prime Minister Ben Chif- ley.

Ford continued the production of the uniquely Australian coupe utility first sold in 1934. The 1946 Mercury coupe utility was made at the Geelong fac- tory. The front section was constructed using imported complete knock down kits from Canada (source of right hand drive componentry), but the rear sec- tion was designed and constructed in Australia. The 1946 model was really a 1942 model assembled locally and sold post war.

Albert’s Mercury utility—Albert’s Mercury is almost unbelievably rare. Not only is the body style uniquely Australian, but only about 70 were made between 1946 and 1948, the only Mercury commercial built in Australia. With attrition over the years there must be precious few remaining, perhaps as few as 5 or 6.

Albert’s car was largely complete when he found it, but the seaside resting place had taken its toll with corrosion of the body and much of the largely irreplaceable trim. Albert had to assemble one stainless steel guard trim from eight separate pieces, carefully cut, welded and polished!

The final result is absolutely stunning. Resplendent in its lustrous maroon Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. Page 21

paint, with polished stainless external trim, and the rumble of the original flathead V8 Albert’s Mercury is a wonderful addition to the Club’s collection. The interior is very impressively finished too with its new period correct grey-brown velour interior.

Well done Albert for even attempting such a complex restoration. You have pre- served an important part of Australia’s unique early motoring heritage. Page 22 The Wheel Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. Page 23

Jeff Gill posted in these photos of his historic caravan. The Van has special interest ti Jeff because his father manufactured it and was one of Australia’s caravan pioneer builders. Jeff often brings the van to club events and it is a fabulous example of vanning over fifty years go. Jeff completed a full restora- tion of the van and it will feature in a future adition of the WHEEL. Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. Page 25 Page 26 The Wheel

She was the pride of a nation. Advertisements trumpeted the FX Holden as the “only car designed and built for Australia.”

Back in 1949, she was. The first car manufactured in Australia was sold for a cool £500 to Essington Lewis, an Australian who was the director of munitions during World War II.

This car was no slouch. She reached speeds up to 130 kph and was much desired on suburban streets. Her nine-inch clearance made her perfect for dusty, bumpy roads.

The rest, as they say, is history. The Holden became the quintessential Aussie car. But this particular beast fell from the spotlight.

The National Museum then bought her for AU$750,000 in 2004. Conservators got to work on her engine, gearbox and brake system. Like the restoration process, starting this car isn’t easy. Drivers have to get out of the car and manually strike her external switch to bump her into action.

The car roared back to life November 2. 2011 and is on display at the National Mu- seum of Australia.

In her original gray color and red leather interior, she cruised out of the Mitchell Store at the National Museum and onto the streets of Canberra. Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. Page 27
