Filed for intro on 04/22/2003 SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 305 By Cohen A RESOLUTION to recognize the visitors to the Stax Museum Opening Events as Honorary Tennesseans. WHEREAS, from the mountains in the East, to the honky-tonks of Nashville, to the streets of Memphis, the sounds of music emanate from every corner of this great State; and WHEREAS, from Hank Williams to Elvis Presley, the Carter Family to the Staple Singers, and Otis Redding to Isaac Hayes, Tennessee has borne and nourished the music that revolutionized American culture; and WHEREAS, Tennessee is recognized throughout the world as the home to country music, the blues, and sweet soul music; and WHEREAS, visitors to this great State share with its citizens a common love and respect for the sounds, cultures, and sites of Tennessee; and WHEREAS, citizens and visitors alike will gather in Memphis from April 27 through May 1, 2003, to celebrate the Grand Opening of the Stax Museum; and SJR0305 00624183 -1- WHEREAS, the developers of the Stax Museum recognize the utmost importance of the music that was created within the walls of the Stax Records recording studios; the Museum is devoted to the documentation and preservation of the Stax legacy; and WHEREAS, in 1959, former country fiddler Jim Stewart, and his sister, Estelle Axton, founded what would, in 1961, become Stax Records; the label's first hit was "Cause I Love You," by Rufus and Carla Thomas; and WHEREAS, second only to Motown in popular soul music sales and influence, Stax Records was nevertheless first in gritty, raw, stripped-down soul; featuring artists like Otis Redding, Rufus & Carla Thomas, Sam & Dave, and Isaac Hayes, and with house band Booker T. -
“Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). My epiphany—and catalyst for the current thesis topic—eventually presented itself while viewing a live performance from Peter Green Splinter Group. The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago. -

Lesson 3:Respecting Yourself and Others
Lesson 3: Respecting Yourself and Others "Respect" was written and performed by Otis Redding (1965). "Respect Yourself" was written by Luther Ingram and Mack Rice and performed by the Staple Singers (1971). Introduction This lesson opens a dialogue between two Stax recordings on a shared theme: Otis Redding’s “Respect” and the Staple Singers’ “Respect Yourself.” One song focuses on the human need to be respected by others, while the other song emphasizes respect for oneself. Facing History Theme: Respect Essential Questions ● What is respect? ● If you feel respected (or disrespected), how does that impact the way you see yourself and others? ● How does feeling respected or disrespected influence the choices you make? The Blues iGod: Downloading Tunes from Heaven Virginia-Highland Church Rev. Beverly Friedlander Ostrowski July 2, 2017 Psalm 13, Genesis 21: 1-14; Mt 10: 40-42 PREACHING TEXT ONLY The recommended readings for today include a story I could not read before the children left the room. In Genesis, the sacrifice of Isaac is a story about a father who thinks he hears God tell him to take his son up a mountain and sacrifice him on an altar to God. As written, the story ends well: an angel stops Abraham from killing his child and provides a ram for the sacrifice. Then God blesses Abraham for his faithfulness and submission to God’s most egregious demand. This story is horrible. No matter what theologians and rabbis have done through the ages to say, “But God …,” I remain unconvinced that the God I know in Jesus Christ would test us in this way. In other words, much of this story to me is not the Living Word of God. I’ve never really cared for Abraham in terms of his life as a husband, father, or spiritual ancestor. Besides the Isaac episode, he exiled his older son, Ishmael, with the child’s mother, sending them into the desert with too little bread and water to live on. He pretended to be his wife’s brother and pimped her out to a foreign king so he wouldn’t get killed. When he had a chance to save the city of Sodom, he actually debated with God for a bit and won their salvation if there were 10 righteous people there.
