Caribbean Teams in North American Professional Soccer: Time for a New Direction? Glen ME Duerr Department of History and Government Cedarville University 104 HRS, 251 N. Main Street Cedarville, Ohio, USA 45314 [email protected] RASAALA, Vol. 5, No. 1 (2014) 1 Caribbean Teams in North American Professional Soccer: Time for a New Direction? Abstract This paper examines the interrelated issues of time and money in club and international football. Specifically, the focus is on small Caribbean countries and territories that are rich in talent, but poor in opportunities. In the past decade, several professional teams in the Caribbean have played in the minor league system in North America, but have been stifled by several factors. This paper argues that the creation of a ‘Caribbean division’ that plays in either the North American Soccer League (NASL) or United Soccer League (USL)-Pro league would enrich and develop teams and players from all parties involved, and they would be more competitive in FIFA World Cup qualifying. The key ingredient is correctly timing such a venture. Keywords: Caribbean, soccer, North America, USL-Pro, NASL RASAALA, Vol. 5, No. 1 (2014) 2 Introduction Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), the regional governing body of soccer in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, sends three and a half teams to the quadrennial FIFA World Cup. The fourth-placed CONCACAF team plays a home and away playoff series against a team in another region, either in Asia, South America or Oceania, depending on the rotation. On every occasion since the number of berths was expanded to three in 1998, the United States and Mexico have taken two of the berths.

Brian Brown, originally from Sandy Bay, Jamaica, played for Harbor View FC in the Jamaican Red Stripe Premier League in 2013 and brought his talents stateside when he was loaned to the Philadelphia Union. Brian Brown then spent time with Indy Eleven and Charlotte Independence before signing with Reno 1868 FC in 2017. In Reno’s first match of the season, Brown scored in the 63rd minute to help the team in their 2-2 draw against Orange County SC. In the second match of the season against Austin Bold FC, Brown scored in the 46th minute and 78th min- ute to help the club defeat Austin Bold FC 2-1.

  • Part 4: the State of Soccer in Hampton Roads
The State Of Soccer In Hampton Roads THE STATE OF SOCCER IN HAMPTON ROADS Soccer isn’t the same as Bach or Buddhism. But it is often more deeply felt than religion, and just as much a part of the community’s fabric, a repository of traditions. – Franklin Foer, “How Soccer Explains the World: An Unlikely Theory of Globalization” t has been called “The Beautiful Game” (a nickname popularized by Pelé, the legendary Brazilian footballer) and “The World’s Game.” With apologies to soccer purists, the second name is probably more accurate. The scope and size of the sport of soccer – football to most of the world – are undeniably large. Soccer is played by the young and old, men and women, believers of different (or no) faiths, the poor and rich, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. It is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, ranking fourth among all sports in terms of popularity in a recent Gallup survey.1 While American football dominated the list Iof favorite sports in the U.S., with 37 percent of respondents saying it was their favorite sport to watch, soccer, at 7 percent, was only 2 percentage points behind baseball (9 percent) and 4 percentage points behind basketball (11 percent) in terms of popularity.
