Media nations: UK 2019 Published 7 August 2019 Overview This is Ofcom’s second annual Media Nations report. It reviews key trends in the television and online video sectors as well as the radio and other audio sectors. Accompanying this narrative report is an interactive report which includes an extensive range of data. There are also separate reports for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Media Nations report is a reference publication for industry, policy makers, academics and consumers. This year’s publication is particularly important as it provides evidence to inform discussions around the future of public service broadcasting, supporting the nationwide forum which Ofcom launched in July 2019: Small Screen: Big Debate. We publish this report to support our regulatory goal to research markets and to remain at the forefront of technological understanding. It addresses the requirement to undertake and make public our consumer research (as set out in Sections 14 and 15 of the Communications Act 2003). It also meets the requirements on Ofcom under Section 358 of the Communications Act 2003 to publish an annual factual and statistical report on the TV and radio sector. This year we have structured the findings into four chapters. • The total video chapter looks at trends across all types of video including traditional broadcast TV, video-on-demand services and online video. • In the second chapter, we take a deeper look at public service broadcasting and some wider aspects of broadcast TV. • The third chapter is about online video. This is where we examine in greater depth subscription video on demand and YouTube. -

Yolanda Joy Calvo Benzies Abstract The presence of colloquial and informal language is rather neglected in today’s EFL classrooms. The following study aims to demonstrate that this vocabulary, part of a genuine, real-world English, can be incorporated into the lesson in a unique way; by using authentic audio-visual materials like television sitcoms. For this dissertation, several fields have been explored in depth, such as the value of those genuine products as a teaching tool, that goes hand in hand with students’ motivation, the relevance of the cultural competence and further aspects like the purpose of working with informal and colloquial word-forms, the irrefutable role of captions and an analysis of the incidental vocabulary acquisition phenomenon in the language learning experience. Moreover, this MA dissertation includes an empirical study conducted with 4th of ESO students which aimed at analysing whether using the Northern Irish TV show Derry Girls is a beneficial tool to gain new vocabulary like idioms and phrasal verbs. The results obtained indicate that students were more motivated when learning English this way; moreover, it in fact helped most of them learn new vocabulary. BLOG Trivago and Derry Girls EDINBURGH PARTNERSHIP TELEVISION NICOLA CLARK - MARKETING COORDINATOR 12 MAR 2019 Trivago, the hotel search comparison specialist, is currently sponsoring Channel 4’s hit coming-of-age comedy, Derry Girls, for its second series. Created and written by Lisa McGee, Derry Girls candidly follows the lives of five teenagers as they navigate life in Derry during The Troubles. Series one of Derry Girls was the most watched series in Northern Ireland since modern records began in 2002 and won both Best Comedy and Best Writer at the 2018 IFTA Gala Television Awards as well as the 2018 Radio Times Comedy Champion award. Across the UK, consolidated viewing figures revealed that the first series was watched by an average on 2.5 million viewers making it Channel 4’s biggest comedy launch since 2004. Negotiated by MediaCom Edinburgh, Trivago features sponsorship bumpers throughout the show. They also feature on all the on-air promos as well as on All4. New creative has been developed for the partnership which features a Northern Irish voiceover to link it to the programme. Maud Cant, Head of AV at MediaCom Edinburgh, said “Derry Girls has been one of the best performing programmes against 16-34adults on its first series last year, so it was a great opportunity for us to help Trivago reach the younger end of their target audience. After a lot of back and forth we managed to get a deal agreed and we are delighted that Trivago made sure they are maximising the partnership with the creation of new bumpers”. -

Archived BBC public responses to complaints 2014 The One Show, BBC One, 14 January 2014 Complaint We have received complaints about Paul O'Grady's appearance on the One Show on 14 January. Some viewers felt that his views on benefit reform were not adequately challenged. BBC's Response The One Show is a topical magazine programme which occasionally reports on prominent news stories. Following media coverage of the debate around Channel Four's Benefits Street, The One Show asked members of the public for their views on the programme. A variety of opinions were heard from all sides of the debate. Following this, and in keeping with One Show tradition, the presenters discussed the issues raised with that day's studio guest, Paul O'Grady. Paul was clearly identified as a Labour supporter, and he was challenged on how he would reduce the benefits bill. Paul's views were forthright, and on reflection more could have been done to put them into context, but it is important to note that balance can be achieved across a number of programmes, and this is a subject that the One Show has covered before and hopes to revisit again in the future. EastEnders, BBC One, 14 January 2014 Complaint We received complaints from some viewers who were unhappy with a comment made by Shabnam during EastEnders on 14 January 2014. The BBC's response EastEnders has a rich history of tackling social issues. The show does not advocate racism or intolerance in any way; in fact it seeks to challenge these negative views. -

Centre for Cultural Policy Research Department of Theatre, Film and Television University of Glasgow Glasgow G12 8QQ December 2008 © Caitriona Noonan, 2008 Abstract This thesis examines the way in which media professionals negotiate the occupational challenges related to television and radio production. It has used the subject of religion and its treatment within the BBC as a microcosm to unpack some of the dilemmas of contemporary broadcasting. In recent years religious programmes have evolved in both form and content leading to what some observers claim is a “renaissance” in religious broadcasting. However, any claims of a renaissance have to be balanced against the complex institutional and commercial constraints that challenge its long-term viability. This research finds that despite the BBC’s public commitment to covering a religious brief, producers in this style of programming are subject to many of the same competitive forces as those in other areas of production. Furthermore those producers who work in-house within the BBC’s Department of Religion and Ethics believe that in practice they are being increasingly undermined through the internal culture of the Corporation and the strategic decisions it has adopted. This is not an intentional snub by the BBC but a product of the pressure the Corporation finds itself under in an increasingly competitive broadcasting ecology, hence the removal of the protection once afforded to both the department and the output. -

Monstrous Aunties: The Rabelaisian older Asian woman in British cinema and television comedy Estella Tincknell, University of the West of England Introduction Representations of older women of South Asian heritage in British cinema and television are limited in number and frequently confined to non-prestigious genres such as soap opera. Too often, such depictions do little more than reiterate familiar stereotypes of the subordinate ‘Asian wife’ or stage the discursive tensions around female submission and male tyranny supposedly characteristic of subcontinent identities. Such marginalisation is compounded in the relative neglect of screen representations of Asian identities generally, and of female and older Asian experiences specifically, within the fields of Film and Media analysis. These representations have only recently begun to be explored in more nuanced ways that acknowledge the complexity of colonial and post-colonial discoursesi. The decoupling of the relationship between Asian and Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage, together with the foregrounding of religious rather than national-colonial identities, has further rendered the topic more complex. Yet there is an exception to this tendency. In the 1990s, British comedy films and TV shows began to carve out a space in which transgressive representations of aging Asian women appeared. From the subversively mischievous Pushpa (Zohra Segal) in Gurinder Chadha’s debut feature, Bhaji on the Beach (1993), to the bickering ‘competitive mothers’ of the ground-breaking sketch show, Goodness, Gracious Me (BBC 1998 – 2001, 2015), together 1 with the sexually-fixated grandmother, Ummi (Meera Syal), in The Kumars at Number 42 (BBC, 2001-6; Sky, 2014), a range of comic older female figures have overturned conventional discourses.
