James PYLON James Paddock James Padock I recorded sound and did the sound design for an art instalation by artist Sept Paddock, artist James Paddock, which premiered at the A-side/B-side gallery London. The 2019 installation explores the world of a young woman as she expereiences a psychotic episode and incorporates auditory hallucination. Some of this was recorded binaurally. Something I learned along the way was that when someone hears voices in their head, they aren't 'imagined' as such, in the sense that I can imagine a conversation with someone and imagine their side of the conversation in their voice. No! Voice-hearers are experiencing the voice more realistically...brain scans have shown that their auditory cortex lights up when voice-hearing, in the same way as it would when hearing a 'real' voice. Archived BBC public responses to complaints 2014 The One Show, BBC One, 14 January 2014 Complaint We have received complaints about Paul O'Grady's appearance on the One Show on 14 January. Some viewers felt that his views on benefit reform were not adequately challenged. BBC's Response The One Show is a topical magazine programme which occasionally reports on prominent news stories. Following media coverage of the debate around Channel Four's Benefits Street, The One Show asked members of the public for their views on the programme. A variety of opinions were heard from all sides of the debate. Following this, and in keeping with One Show tradition, the presenters discussed the issues raised with that day's studio guest, Paul O'Grady. Paul was clearly identified as a Labour supporter, and he was challenged on how he would reduce the benefits bill. Paul's views were forthright, and on reflection more could have been done to put them into context, but it is important to note that balance can be achieved across a number of programmes, and this is a subject that the One Show has covered before and hopes to revisit again in the future. EastEnders, BBC One, 14 January 2014 Complaint We received complaints from some viewers who were unhappy with a comment made by Shabnam during EastEnders on 14 January 2014. The BBC's response EastEnders has a rich history of tackling social issues. The show does not advocate racism or intolerance in any way; in fact it seeks to challenge these negative views.

  • The Bbc Trust Report: On-Screen and On-Air Talent Including an Independent Assessment and Report by Oliver & Ohlbaum Associates
THE BBC TRUST REPORT: ON-SCREEN AND ON-AIR TALENT INCLUDING AN INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT AND REPORT BY OLIVER & OHLBAUM ASSOCIATES MAY 2008 2 BBC TRUST CONCLUSIONS The issue of talent costs The BBC Trust operates to protect the interests of licence fee payers who pay for and own the BBC. As part of this we seek to ensure quality and value for money for licence fee payers and to challenge BBC management to use everything at their disposal to deliver both. An area where this is particularly complex is the salaries paid to on-screen and on-air talent. During the course of 2006, press reports about presenters’ salaries aroused industry and public concern and led some people to question the BBC’s approach to the talent it employs. This debate was still live when the Trust was established as the BBC’s governing body in January 2007. It was and has remained a topic raised by the public with Trustees during our appearances on radio phone-ins and at public meetings in all parts of the UK. Against this background the Trust commissioned an independent review, conducted by Oliver and Ohlbaum Associates Ltd (O&O), to provide an in depth examination of the BBC’s use of on air and on screen talent. We posed O&O three specific questions: • How do the size and structure of the BBC's reward packages for talent compare with the rest of the market? • What has been the impact of the BBC's policy on the talent market, particularly in relation to cost inflation? • To what extent do the BBC's policy and processes in relation to investment in, and reward of, talent support value for money? We are publishing O&O’s report which seeks to answer these questions, the BBC management’s response to the points it raises and our own judgements informed by this evidence.

  • Fearsome Winds Puts the Hell on High Seas Yacht at a 45-Degree Angle
For up-to-the-minute updates from the BT Sport Relief Challenge: Hell on High Seas including images and video content follow Twitter and BBC Live Fearsome winds puts the Hell on High Seas yacht at a 45-degree angle Yesterday was a tough day for the six celebrities on the BT Sport Relief Challenge: Hell on High Seas, as they passed the Isle of Man sailing south at a speed of 7 knots after leaving Belfast on Monday. The yacht was on its keel at a 45-degree angle, so even the simple task of walking around was made tough, not to mention having to steer the boat through the elements. As the weather closed in on them, they experienced winds of 20 knots, the air temperature was 6 degrees and the sea temperature only 9 degrees - so they really felt the icy cold water as it splashed against their bare faces. The One Show’s Alex Jones, TV presenter Angellica Bell, Comedian Hal Cruttenden, Actress Doon Mackichan, and TV presenters Ore Oduba and Suzi Perry will battle fearsome winds, freezing temperatures and rough seas in a feat of pure physical, mental and emotional endurance. The challenge is sponsored by BT, a long-term supporter of Sport Relief challenges since 2009. Today (Tuesday 8th March) will see more wind, meaning more keel on the boat as the bad weather passes them and heads to the west. Ian Walker, the Volvo Ocean Race skipper, said: “Today the celebrity crew need to be very careful when working on the yacht due to the angle of the boat, as we are racing against the elements to get around Land’s End.” The celebrity crew are paired up into a buddy system so they are able to carry out their daily tasks in four hour shifts, which include manually hoisting the huge sails, steering the boat and much more.
