THREATENED SPECIES SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 The Minister’s delegate approved this Conservation Advice on 16/12/2016 . Conservation Advice Galaxias johnstoni Clarence galaxias Conservation Status Galaxias johnstoni (Clarence galaxias) is listed as Endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) effective from 16 July 2000. The species was eligible for listing under the EPBC Act as on 16 July 2000 it was listed as Endangered under Schedule 1 of the preceding Act, the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). Species can also be listed as threatened under state and territory legislation. For information on the current listing status of this species under relevant state or territory legislation, see http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/sprat/public/sprat.pl . The main factors that make the species eligible for listing in the Endangered category are that the Clarence galaxias had experienced past decline, it had a limited distribution in central Tasmania that was severely fragmented and continuing decline was inferred given the presence of introduced fish species in areas where some of the populations occur (TSS 2006). Description The Clarence galaxias, family Galaxiidae, is a small, stout freshwater fish, reaching a maximum length of approximately 140 mm (Allen et al., 2002; TSS 2006). Adults are dark brown in colour with irregular brown bars or blotches on the back and sides, tending to a yellow belly (Allen et al., 2002; TSS 2006). Numerous very small black spots are often present, but these are parasites in the skin rather than natural markings of the species (Fulton 1990). -

Cochrane February 2002 Department of Conservation and Land Management Western Australian Threatened Species and Communities Unit (WATSCU) PO Box 51, Wanneroo, WA 6946 Interim Recovery Plan for Myoporum turbinatum FOREWORD Interim Recovery Plans (IRPs) are developed within the framework laid down in Department of Conservation and Land Management (the Department) Policy Statements Nos. 44 and 50. IRPs outline the recovery actions that are required to urgently address those threatening processes most affecting the ongoing survival of threatened taxa or ecological communities, and begin the recovery process. The Department is committed to ensuring that Critically Endangered taxa are conserved through the preparation and implementation of Recovery Plans or Interim Recovery Plans and by ensuring that conservation action commences as soon as possible and always within one year of endorsement of that rank by the Minister. This Interim Recovery Plan will operate from February 2002 to January 2007 but will remain in force until withdrawn or replaced. It is intended that, if the taxon is still ranked Critically Endangered, this IRP will be replaced by a full Recovery Plan after five years. This IRP was approved by the Acting Director of Nature Conservation on 24 September, 2002. The provision of funds identified in this Interim Recovery Plan is dependent on budgetary and other constraints affecting the Department, as well as the need to address other priorities. Six families all breeding in our region. Feed mainly on aquatic animals including fish, arthropods and molluscs. Take-off from water aided by hopping or kicking with both feet together, in synchrony with wing-beat. Totipalmate (four toes connected by three webs). Hind toe rather long and turned inwards. Claws of feet curved and strong to aid in clambering up cliffs and trees. Body-down evenly distributed on both pterylae and apteria. Contour-feathers without after shaft, except slightly developed in Fregatidae. Pair of oil glands rather large and external opening tufted. Upper mandible has complex rhamphotheca of three or four plates. Pair of salt-glands or nasal glands recessed into underside of frontal bone (not upper side as in other saltwater birds) (Schmidt-Nielson 1959; Siegel Causey 1990). Salt-glands drain via ducts under rhamphotheca at tip of upper mandible. Moist throat-lining used for evaporative cooling aided by rapid gular-flutter of hyoid bones. Tongue rudimentary, but somewhat larger in Phaethontidae. Throat, oesophagus and stomach united in a distensible gullet. Undigested food remains are regurgitated. Only fluids pass pyloric sphincter. Sexually dimorphic plumage only in Anhingidae and Fregatidae. -

Threatened Fishes Committee Report - May 2001 By David Crook As promised in the last newsletter, a provisional list of threatened Australian fishes using the IUCN classification scheme has been prepared and is presented below. Due to the new listing of many marine threatened species, the number of listed species has dramatically increased from 91 to 210. This increase in numbers provides significant challenges for the committee in terms of keeping the list up to date, and increases the need for input from Society members with specialist knowledge of particular taxa. It is simply not possible for the committee members to keep fully up-to-date with the status of all 210 species. The classifications for freshwater fish in the provisional list are based upon assessments conducted by Peter Jackson and Rob Wager in 1996. The conservation status of several of these species has been updated since then through the Threatened Fish Committee’s nomination process. The classifications for the marine and estuarine species are based upon the recommendations made in the draft “Conservation Overview and Action Plan for Australian Threatened and Potentially Threatened Marine and Estuarine Fishes” prepared by John Pogonoski, John Paxton and Dave Pollard. The provisional list is presented here to allow ASFB members an opportunity to raise any issues of concern prior to the list going before the committee for adoption at the annual conference in Perth. Please take the time to go through the list so that any mistakes, misclassifications or opinions regarding the list are brought to the committee’s attention. Any changes to the provisional classifications will need to go through the normal nomination process (nomination forms are available from me on request). -

THREATENED SPECIES SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 The Minister’s delegate approved this conservation advice on 01/10/2015 Conservation Advice Leucocarbo atriceps purpurascens Macquarie shag Conservation Status Leucocarbo atriceps purpurascens (Macquarie shag) is listed as Vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act). The species is eligible for listing as Vulnerable as, prior to the commencement of the EPBC Act, it was listed as Vulnerable under Schedule 1 of the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). The main factor that is the cause of the species being eligible for listing in the Vulnerable category is its small population size (250-1000 mature individuals). The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2010 considered the Macquarie shag as Vulnerable under Criterion D1 (Population 250–1000 mature individuals) (Garnett et al., 2011). The Threatened Species Scientific Committee are using the findings of Garnett et al., (2011) to consider whether reassessment of the conservation status of each of threatened birds listed under the EPBC Act is required. Description The Macquarie Shag is a medium-sized, black and white marine shag. The adult form reaches a length of 75 cm with a wingspan of 110 cm and weighs between 2.5 and 3.5 kg. (Marchant & Higgins 1990). Adult breeding birds have a glossy black top and sides of head and hindneck with a black crest on the forehead. Demarkation between the black cap and white face starts at the gape and extends back below ear-coverts leaving the lower cheeks and throat white, and giving the face a dark appearance. -

Signed Summary This study used two distinct methods to infer phylogenetic relationships of members of the Galaxioidea. The first approach involved direct sequencing of mitochondrial DNA to produce a molecular phylogeny. Secondly, a thorough osteological study of the galaxiines was the basis of a cladistic analysis to produce a morphological phylogeny. Phylogenetic analysis of 303 base pairs of mitochondrial cytochrome b _supported the monophyly of Neochanna, Paragalaxias and Galaxiella. This gene also reinforced recognised groups such as Galaxias truttaceus-G. auratus and G. fasciatus-G. argenteus. In a previously unrecognised grouping, Galaxias olidus and G. parvus were united as a sister clade to Paragalaxias. In addition, Nesogalaxias neocaledonicus and G. paucispondylus were included in a clade containing G.
