April 22, 2007 The Amis Inheritance By CHARLES McGRATH Ben Jonson wrote: “Greatness of name in the father ofttimes helps not forth, but overwhelms the son; they stand too near one another. The shadow kills the growth.” This Oedipal principle applies to all sorts of professions, but few more so than the literary one. It’s not unheard of for the child of an author to try his hand at writing. Stephen King’s two sons are writers, and so is one of John Updike’s. Hilma Wolitzer’s daughter Meg is a novelist, as is Anita Desai’s daughter Kiran, whose second book just won the Booker Prize — an award that has so far eluded her mother. But writers’ offspring tend to go into the family business with far less regularity than, say, the children of doctors or lawyers, and it seldom happens that over the long haul, and in the deepening shade, the younger equals or outstrips the elder — the way that Anthony Trollope, to take a famous example, bested his mother, Fanny. The exception these days is the curious writerly firm of Amis & Amis, founded by Kingsley, who died in 1995, and now run by his son Martin. Kingsley Amis, an indelible figure in British letters, is the subject of an immense and sympathetic new biography by Zachary Leader (published this month in the United States) that has already caused a stir in England both by reminding readers of how funny Kingsley could be and because of its frankness about his personal life. -

Studia Litteraria Universitatis Iagellonicae Cracoviensis 9 (2014), z. 1, s. 17–28 doi:10.4467/20843933ST.14.002.3049 www.ejournals.eu/Studia-Litteraria WOJCIECH DRĄG Uniwersytet Wrocławski The Man Booker Prize and the Emerging Canon of Contemporary British Fiction Abstract The article sets out to consider the tentative shape of the canon of contemporary British fi ction and to examine the extent to which it has been infl uenced by the most prestigious of British literary prizes – the Booker. An overview of the Prize’s history and a summary of its rules and regulations (eligibility, the jury, the selection process) is followed by an assessment of its legacy, positive and negative, in promoting literary fi ction in Britain. The second part of the article investigates the problematic nature of the notion of “contemporary British fi ction” and considers several aspects of canonicity as well as the essential factors involved in the formation of the canon. The last part provides some empirical data arranged into four tables. It juxtaposes the results of two surveys on the teaching canon of contemporary British fi ction (carried out by Bentley, and by Tew and Addis) with the information about the recognition which the canonical authors and novels have received from the Booker juries. Two of the tables seek to illustrate the prominence of British writers in critical surveys of contemporary literature and on the shortlists of the Booker. The conclusions point to the Prize’s greater potential for infl uencing the critical rather than the teaching canon, while conceding that there are numerous examples of authors and texts that have their place in either canon despite their lack of any Booker success. -

He grew up in the various university towns in which his father taught literature: Swansea, Princeton and Cambridge. His parents divorced when he was twelve. At eighteen, a role in the film A High Wind in Jamaica took him to the West Indies. He Fiction returned to England in 1968 and, after taking “crammers” (courses designed to prepare one A. S. Byatt, Crocodile Tears for university), he enrolled in Exeter College, Oxford. He graduated with first-class honors Giles Foden, The Last King of Scotland in English. In his early twenties, he wrote book reviews for the London Observer and soon Claire Keegan, The Singing Cashier thereafter worked as an editorial assistant for The Times Literary Supplement. His first Will Self, Tough Tough Toys for Tough Tough Boys novel, The Rachel Papers, was published in 1973 and received critical acclaim, winning the Interview Somerset Maugham Award (a prize his father had also been awarded). While at the TLS, he Martin Amis, The Art of Fiction No. 151 published his second novel, Dead Babies (1975), which Auberon Waugh referred to as Poetry “nothing less than brilliant.” Simon Armitage, Four Poems Lavinia Greenlaw, Three Poems From 1977 to 1980 he served as literary editor of The New Statesman, a socialist Tim Kendall, Two Poems Andrew Motion, Out of the Blue weekly, and wrote two more novels, Success (1978) and Other People (1981). -
