However, it seems that Shoyu would not be defeated so easily. After crash landing on Vidya, he began to court the local inhabitants of the planet to join him and fight for his cause! With the planet he was supposed to be trapped on becoming a new source of power, it was up to you Kami-Congoers once again to rise to the occasion and help Shio and Kosho stop Shoyu! (This seems to happen a lot. Who would have known that having the Spirit of the Yandere Black Turtle for a magical animal mascot would have brought so much drama to Kami-Con? Oh, well!) With the help of the congoers, Shoyu only managed to recruit three powerful allies— Ken from Street Fighter, Princess Peach from Super Mario Bros., and Link from The Legend of Zelda. Animating Transcultural Communities: Animation Fandom in North America and East Asia from 1906–2010 By Sandra Annett A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of English, Film, and Theatre University of Manitoba Winnipeg © 2011 Sandra Annett Abstract This dissertation examines the role that animation plays in the formation of transcultural fan communities. A ―transcultural fan community‖ is defined as a group in which members from many national, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds find a sense of connection across difference, engaging with each other through a mutual interest in animation while negotiating the frictions that result from their differing social and historical contexts. The transcultural model acts as an intervention into polarized academic discourses on media globalization which frame animation as either structural neo-imperial domination or as a wellspring of active, resistant readings. Rather than focusing on top-down oppression or bottom-up resistance, this dissertation demonstrates that it is in the intersections and conflicts between different uses of texts that transcultural fan communities are born. The methodologies of this dissertations are drawn from film/media studies, cultural studies, and ethnography. The first two parts employ textual close reading and historical research to show how film animation in the early twentieth century (mainly works by the Fleischer Brothers, Ōfuji Noburō, Walt Disney, and Seo Mitsuyo) and television animation in the late twentieth century (such as The Jetsons, Astro Boy and Cowboy Bebop) depicted and generated nationally and ethnically diverse audiences.

THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON A THESIS IN Musicology Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF MUSIC by MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ B.M., University of Central Missouri, 2014 Kansas City, Missouri 2019 © 2019 MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON Michelle Jurkiewicz, Candidate for the Master of Music Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2019 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, or anime, has been popular around the globe for the last sixty years. Anime has its own fan culture in the United States known as otaku, or the obsessive lifestyle surrounding manga and anime, which has resulted in American production companies creating their own “anime.” Japanese filmmakers do not regard anime simply as a cartoon, but instead realize it as genre of film, such as action or comedy. However, Japanese anime is not only dynamic and influential because of its storylines, characters, and themes, but also for its purposeful choices in music. Since the first anime Astro Boy and through films such as Akira, Japanese animation companies combine their history from the past century with modern or “westernized” music. Unlike cartoon films produced by Disney or Pixar, Japanese anime do not use music to mimic the actions on-screen; instead, music heightens and deepens the plot and emotions. This concept is practiced in live-action feature films, and although anime consists of hand-drawn and computer-generated cartoons, Japanese directors and animators create a “film” experience with their dramatic choice of music.

1 You’re listening to Imaginary Worlds, a show about how we create them and why we suspend our disbelief. I’m Eric Molinsky. I’ve been a fan of Japanese animation – or “anime” – for a long time. When I was in college I used to watch and re-watch Akira, the classic sci-fi anime on laser disc. That’s how old I am. Back then, I really identified with the teen angst of the characters. But anime has always been a youthful medium – or at least the anime that gets exported to the West. And as I’ve reached middle age, I don’t feel a connection with a lot of anime unless it’s looking at youth from a more mature perspective. So, I had been searching for a new series to fall in love with. That’s when I discovered Cowboy Bebop. It’s weird to say I discovered Cowboy Bebop because the show been a cultural phenomenon for over 20 years. I always knew it was a classic. I have no idea why I didn’t get around to watching it before. And it’s short -- only 26 episodes. The show blew me away on so many levels. It’s set in the far future when the Earth is barely inhabitable. Humanity has colonized the solar system and everything’s grungy and hyper capitalistic. By the way, the jazz and bluegrass music I’ll be playing is the soundtrack to the show, which was written by a legendary anime composer named Yoko Kanno. Matt Alt is the author of How Japan’s Pop Culture Conquered the World, and he’s lived in Japan for years.

9 anime you have to watch before you die. Digital design Vanier college Written and compiled by Dante Dhe Paganon Cowboy Bebop Genre : Neo-noir, Space western Directed by : Shinichiro Watanabe Studio : Sunrise Licesned by : Funimantion Music : Yoko Kanno, The Seatbelts Original run : April 3, 1998 - April 24, 1999 Cowboy Bebop is set in the time of 2071, when humanity colonized the solar system they did this through “Gates” used to transport goods throughout the solar system as well as populate it. Interplanetary crime fell under the jurisdiction of the ISSP (Inter Solar System Police) and they created a Bounty reward scheme. Bounty hunters could bring in criminals to the ISSP for a monetary reward. This created the bounty hunters called “Cowboys”. The story centers around Spike Spiegel, a former hitman, and Jet Black, a re- tired ISSP officer who travel the solar system in Jets spaceship the Bebop. Along the way they encounter three new companions; Ein, a hyper-intelligent genetically-mod- ified Corgi, Faye Valentine who’s an amnesiac con artist and Edward, a pre pubesant female computer hacking prodigy. The series is episodic, mostly about the quests and adventures this crew has catching criminals as well as exploring their day to day lives with the exception of Spikes over arching story. The anime recieved universal acclaim and is objectivly the greatest anime of all time and has recieved many awards. The appeal with Cowboy Bebop as well as it’s strongest point is the character development and has hands down the best soundtrack in anime. This anime is a gateway to understanding anime as a form of media and is the second reason anime became popular in the west, the next entry is the first reason.

  • Hey, You're a Girl?: Gendered Expressions in the Popular
DE GRUYTER MOUTON DOI 10.1515/multi-2013-0003 Multilingua 2013; 32(1): 51–78 Mie Hiramoto Hey, you’re a girl?: Gendered expressions in the popular anime, Cowboy Bebop Abstract: The popular anime series, Cowboy Bebop, was originally created and released in Japan in 1998 and later gained an intense overseas following. The show owes its phenomenal international acclaim to successful conventions of hegemonic masculinity represented by the imaginary characters. The social semiotics of desire depicted in Cowboy Bebop cater to a general heterosexual market in which hero and babe characters are represented by archetypes of heterosexual normativity. In this study, the idea of inter-indexicality, or‘the movement between two distinctive indexical systems as a semiotic mode of subject formation’ (Inoue 2003: 317), will be employed in the discussion of data derived from the Japanese and American English dubbing of Cowboy Bebop. The analysis will focus on how ideas including heterosexual normativity are reproduced in order to negotiate the intertextual distances that link the charac- ters and audience. Inter-indexical notions help to construct interpretive voices familiar to the cross-cultural audience’s social world. Keywords: gender, sexuality, indexicality, language ideology, anime, translation Mie Hiramoto: Blk AS5, 7 Arts Link, Singapore 117570, HP: http://profile.nus.edu.sg/fass/ ellmh/, e-mail: [email protected] 1 Introduction: Ideology of gendered speech This research discusses prototypical gendered expressions in Japanese popular anime and how their translations into American English convey ideological masculine and feminine speech styles from Japanese to English. A number of recent studies in sociolinguistics and anthropological linguistics recognize scripted speech as a site of stereotyping (e.g., Ronkin & Karn 1999; Inoue 2003; Meek 2006; Queen 2004).
