  • Gender and Sexuality
Elyse Lemoine November 21, 2013 Game Studies I I am the Shadow, the True Self: Exploring Dungeons, Gender, Sexuality, and Identity in Persona 4 In the small, foggy town of Inaba, trouble brews as people begin to disappearing, reappearing on a TV program called the “Midnight Channel,” where they become cartoonish impersonations of themselves, broadcasting their thoughts and feelings to the world. When the fog rolls into Inaba, it brings the corpses of the missing with it. In the Japanese roleplaying game, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, the player assumes the role of a silent, male protagonist, the Hero, on a mission to save as many people from the Midnight Channel as possible and figure out who the true culprit is behind these disappearances, all while managing school, studying, part-time jobs, and his social life. The game has two main methods of gameplay: one in the town of Inaba, where the player is a powerless high school student trying to manage his life, and one in the television world, where the player and his party must explore dungeons and fight Shadows using the power of Persona. These dungeons, as manifestations of the human psyche, allow players to experience and interact with characters struggling with ideas of self-perception, identity, gender, and sexuality. In Persona 3, players were given Tartarus to explore, a dungeon accessible almost every night. Balancing one’s social life along with exploring this single dungeon became the core mechanic of the game. Persona 4 followed a similar mechanic, only with smaller, individualized dungeons that appear one at a time, tied directly to the game’s main characters.

It researches how a novel communication technology, the Internet, leads to novel entertainment forms, how these lead to novel kinds of businesses that lead to novel industries; and in what way established entertainment forms, businesses, and industries are part of that process. This last aspect is addressed by focusing on one exemplary es- tablished form: movies. Using a transdisciplinary approach and a combination of historical analysis, industry interviews, and an innovative mode of ‘immersive’ textual analysis, a coherent and comprehensive conceptual framework for the creation of and re- search into a specific emerging entertainment form is proposed. Contact: Kristyn Souder Communications Director Email: [email protected] Phone: (267)536-9566 PRESS RELEASE Zenkaikon Convention to Bring Anime and Science Fiction Fans to Lancaster in March Hatboro, PA – January 21, 2013: On March 22-24, 2013, Zenkaikon will hold its seventh annual convention in a new location at the Lancaster County Convention Center in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The convention expects to welcome over two thousand fans of Japanese animation (anime), comics (manga), gaming, and science fiction to downtown Lancaster for the weekend-long event. Zenkaikon had typically been held in the Valley Forge area of Pennsylvania. Many convention attendees don costumes of their favorite characters to attend the annual convention. Planned convention events include a variety of educational panels and workshops hosted by volunteers and guests; anime and live action screenings; a costume and skit competition (the "Masquerade"); a hall costume contest; performances by musical guests; a live action role play ("LARP") event; video game tournaments and tabletop gaming; a formal ball and informal dances; and an exhibit hall of anime-themed merchandise and handmade creations from artists. A number of Guests of Honor have already been announced for Zenkaikon 2013. John de Lancie, best known for his roles on Star Trek and Stargate SG-1, and more recently known for his role as Discord on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, will be hosting panels and meeting attendees. • In the Footsteps of the Master: Confucian Values in Anime and Manga Christopher A
In the Footsteps of the Master 39 In the Footsteps of the Master: Confucian Values in Anime and Manga Christopher A. Born University of Missouri, St. Louis Since their introduction to Japan in the Sixth Century, the teachings of Confucius have played an important role in the creation and sustenance of societal values and order. While Japanese society has changed much since the dawn of the postwar era, these same basic principles are still highly influential, but are seen in some surprising forms. Geared primarily at pre-teen and teen-age boys, recent shônen anime, especially Naruto and Bleach, evince Confucian values while encouraging the viewer to identify with and embrace them. While some critics of contemporary culture are quick to point out some of the societal breakdowns and subcultural variances common to the Otaku phenomenon, Confucianism is still alive and well, albeit in reinterpreted forms. Using shônen anime in the classroom to examine traditional values creates a useful device for understanding Japanese popular culture and its connection to larger anthropological and historical themes. Traditional Confucian Influences That Confucius has historically had a great influence on Japanese society is no secret. In conjunction with Buddhism, the teachings of Confucius made their way to Japan from China via emissaries from Korea in 552, when the kingdom of Paekche was seeking allies in their struggles for power with the competing kingdoms of Koguryo and Silla. This ushered in a new era of learning as the Japanese elites began to adopt a new written language, mainland Asian philosophy, moral values, and religion. In a matter of roughly fifty years, these new concepts had become so influential that Prince Shôtoku incorporated them into his seventeen-article constitution in 604 Vol.
