The past few weeks have not been the calmest for South-Doyle’s Elijah Young. The standout student-athlete had been verbally committed to play football at the University of Missouri since last June. But when Tigers head coach Barry Odom was fired on November 30th, Young had a lot of thinking to do. “I kinda knew what to expect. I knew I had to have options in case this did happen,” Young said. “I opened up my recruitment, but I still was committed to Missouri.” Young spoke to other colleges, who were very interested in the 2019 Mr. Football Award winner in Class 5A. He took an official visit to Purdue. Still, Missouri was always at the forefront of the decision process. UM hired former Appalachian State head coach Eliah Drinkwitz as the Tigers new head coach on December 10th. “I was his first home visit,” Young remembers. “We sat down and talked. He told me what he wanted out of me as a player and a stu- dent. So, I went back (to Missouri) on an official visit. We sat down and watched film of Appalachian State football and I just loved it.” That comfort level put Young at ease, and he signed a National Letter of Intent with Missouri during the early signing period on December 18th. L&N STEM Academy and Carter High battled to a 13½ to 13½ tie in their District 4 girls’ semifinal match at Fountain Lanes Thurs- day and L&N picked up the win on the tie-breaker by having three more pins in the three-game total pin fall.
