BOOK REVIEW Girlfriends and Postfeminist Sisterhood, by Alison Winch, Basingstoke and New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2013, x + 222 pp., AU$91.62 (ebk), ISBN 0230348750 Alison Winch’s monograph Girlfriends and Postfeminist Sisterhood is a thoughtful and wide ranging critique of US and UK media cultures of neoliberal postfeminism. Its particular focus is on bonds of female friendship and sisterhood, and how they are configured, made legible and imbued with political charge in these cultural landscapes. It is an immensely valuable contribution to feminist media studies, and in particular to the growing body of scholarship on postfeminist media culture. It joins a raft of relatively new publications at the vanguard of the new wave of feminist criticism of postfeminist culture to emerge in recent years from disciplines spanning media studies, cultural studies, film studies, sociology, literary studies and beyond. And which so far includes, but is not limited to, Stephanie Harzewski’s Chick Lit and Postfeminism (2011), Anthea Taylor’s Single Women in Popular Culture (2012), Jessica Ringrose’s Postfeminist Education? (2013), Joel Gwynne’s Erotic Memoirs and Postfeminism (2013), Bronwyn Polaschek’s The Postfeminist Biopic, and Gwynne and Nadine Muller’s Postfeminism and Contemporary Hollywood (2013). Winch’s book also sits particularly well alongside Kathleen Rowe Karlyn’s Unruly Girls, Unrepentant Mothers (2011) and Sarah Projansky’s Spectacular Girls (2014), as part of a key cluster of recent volumes that hone in on the relationship between postfeminist discourse, contemporary girl cultures and female friendship. And which interrogate the discursive articulation of these dynamics in spheres of popular media. With her timely and welcome contribution to this area of study, scholars like Winch are thus building productively and solidly upon foundations laid by the formative work of key figures like Angela McRobbie (2004), Rosalind Gill (2007), Diane Negra (2007, 2009) and Yvonne Tasker (2007), the likes of which now constitutes the academic canon of this field. -

winner of the 2018 Feminist studies Graduate Student award Stephanie YingYi Wang When Tongzhi Marry: Experiments of Cooperative Marriage between Lalas and Gay Men in Urban China Ang Lee’s fiLm The Wedding BanqueT could be classic introductory material for tongzhi studies and, particularly, for research on cooper- ative marriage.1 In the film, Wai-Tung, a Taiwanese landlord who lives happily with his American boyfriend Simon in New York, is troubled by his parents’ constant efforts to try and find him a bride. His partner Simon suggests he could arrange a marriage of convenience with Wai- Tung’s tenant Wei Wei who is from mainland China and is also in need of a green card to stay in the United States. However, their plan back- fires when Wai-Tung’s enthusiastic parents arrive in the United States and plan a big wedding banquet. As the film critic and scholar Chris 1. Tongzhi, literally “same purpose,” is the Chinese term for “comrade.” Since the 1990s, it has been appropriated to replace the more formal tóngxìnglìan (same-sex love) to refer to gay men and lalas (same-sex desiring women) in the Chinese-speaking world. The translation of xinghun as “cooperative marriage” is debatable, as xinghun literally means “pro-forma marriage.” In other works, “contract marriage,” “fake marriage,” or “pro-forma marriage” are used to refer to gay-lala marriage. Informed by Lucetta Kam’s work, I use “cooperative mar- riage” to highlight that such marriage is not merely functional without sus- tenance, but is contingent on the cooperation and negotiation between mul- tiple parties in the relationship, as my findings suggest. -

By Margaret Nichols Psychotherapy Networker January/February 2018 You’ve been seeing the couple sitting across from you for a little more than six months. They’ve had a sexless marriage for many years, and Joyce, the wife, is at the end of her rope. Her husband, Alex, has little or no sex drive. There’s no medical reason for this; he’s just never really been interested in sex. After years of feeling neglected, Joyce recently had an aair, with Alex’s blessing. This experience convinced her that she could no longer live without sex, so when the aair ended, the marriage was in crisis. “I love Alex,” Joyce said, “but now that I know what it’s like to be desired by someone, not to mention how good sex is, I’m not willing to give it up for the rest of my life.” Divorce would’ve been the straightforward solution, except that, aside from the issue of sex, they both agree they have a loving, meaningful, and satisfying life together as coparents, best friends, and members of a large community of friends and neighbors. They want to stay together, but after six months of failed therapeutic interventions, including sensate-focus exercises and Gottman-method interventions to break perpetual-problem gridlock, they’re at the point of separating. As their therapist, what do you do? • Help them consciously uncouple • Refer them to an EFT therapist to help them further explore their attachment issues • Advise a temporary separation, reasoning that with some space apart they can work on their sexual problems • Suggest they consider polyamory and help them accept Alex’s asexuality. -

AMERICAN MASCULINITY AND HOMOSOCIAL BEHAVIOR IN THE BROMANCE ERA by DIANA SARGENT Under the Direction of Patricia Davis ABSTRACT This study examines and reflects upon the current “bromance” culture that has emerged in American society and aims to conceptualize how media texts relate to masculine hegemony. Attention to current media portrayals, codes of conduct, rituals, homosocial interaction, and con- structions of masculinity in American culture is essential for the evaluation of the current era of American masculinity. Mediated portrayals present an ironic position on male closeness, dictate how men should behave towards women and other men, and create real life situations in which these mediated expectations are fostered and put into practice. Textual analyses of the films Superbad and I Love You, Man and the television series How I Met Your Mother were conducted, as well as an ethnographic study of cult film audiences of The Room to better understand mani- festations of homosocial environments in mediated texts and in real life settings. -

I examine how shifting developments in economic, societal, cultural, and gender relations impacted the perception of cinematic masculinity. The men, more specifically white and heterosexual, in these films position themselves as victims and, as a result, turn to alternative outlets to ease their frustrations and anxieties. In order to broadly survey the genre of the past two decades, I focus on three consistently popular character tropes in Hollywood comedies: slackers, office workers, and bromantic friendships. All the male characters discussed throughout the thesis are plagued by their innermost anxieties and desires that compromise their gendered identities. However, these films resort to a regressive understanding of masculinity and functions within the dominant heteronormative structures. This thesis demonstrates how Hollywood comedies present a contradictory and multifaceted image of modern masculinity. -

A bstract Romantic comedy adaptations based on bestsellers aimed at predominantly female readers have become more frequent in the fifteen years since the publication of Bridget Jones’s Diary (1996) and the financial success of its adaptation (Sharon Maguire, 2001). Contemporary popular literature and films created specifically for women have emerged alongside the spread of neoliberalist and postfeminist discourses. This thesis offers a timely examination of bestselling adapted texts, including chick lit novels, a sel f - help book and a memoir, and their romantic comedy adaptations. While some of the books and films have received individual attention in academic writing, they have not been examined together as an interconnected group of texts. This thesis is the first work to cohesively analyse representations of gender in mainstream bestsellers predominantly aimed at female readers and their romantic comedy adaptations published and released between 1996 and 2011. Through a combination of textual analysis and broader d iscursive and contextual analysis, it examines how these popular culture texts adapt and extend themes, characters , narrative style and the plot structure from Bridget Jones’s Diary .
