She was only sixteen at the time, but she was a woman in my eyes. I was out near the watermill, playing by the stream that ran through our backyard. I had discovered that when you pull a dandelion out of the ground there was this whole other half to them that nobody sees. Normally, all you can see are the soft fuzzy seeds that dance in the wind and get caught on your tongue if you breathe too close to them. At first, the weeds were hard to pull out. I had to tug and lean back on my heels before they gave way and sent me crashing to the ground.
