Bob Stark presented the Chapter Annual Appreciation Award to Tom Duggan for his long and valuable service to the Chapter in several capacities, the latest as Treasurer and liaison with National for the 2014 Convention. The matter of officers for 2014 was taken up. Chuck Girard was tasked to put together a nominating commit- tee, but it was deemed unnecessary because the current officers were asked if they wished to continue serving and were re-elected by acclamation: Bob Stark, President; Al Kaeppel, V-P; Tom Duggan, Treasurer.; Mal- colm Cleaveland, Secretary; Ken Eddy, National NRHS Representative, Chuck Girard, local membership; Gary McCullah and Steve Tharp, National Directors. Tom Duggan, the Treasurer, reported our total assets as $13,190. He handed out slips for a refund of the $12 chapter dues as we discussed in November, although some members are passing up the refund so the chapter can keep the money (defeating the idea of refunding chapter dues as a way of partially reducing the rather large accumulation in our accounts).

Blair, for most when you hear the name it has no significance. But as Harrison County’s history goes that couldn’t be farther from the truth. He was born in 1802 in New Jersey and came from Scotch-Irish ancestry. He had a very entrepreneurial spirit and owned numerous successful businesses and added to them throughout his life. From grocery stores and grist mills to banks and railroad ventures, his business prowess made him a very affluent man of his era. He was even one of the delegates to the Chi- cago Convention that nominated Lincoln! His interest in railways was spurred, no pun intended, by the Iowa Legis- lature when in July of 1856 it granted land to be used by the Air Line Railway company for railroad expansion throughout the State. Then in 1860 the Iowa Legislature changed the land grant from the Air Line to the Cedar Rapids and Missouri River Railroad. The work done west of Marshalltown was all completed under Blair’s competent direction. By 1867, Blair had literally worked his way across Iowa and in January of that year his mastery of busi- ness, varied resources and management of workers led to the completion of the line to Council Bluffs. Over the years as several railroads merged and names changed, Blair became associated with the Chicago and Northwestern Railway Company. Iowa’s railroad system and carriers History The railroad industry has been with Iowa almost as long as Iowa has been a state. The first railroad to cross the Mississippi River was completed in 1855, and the first main line across the state was completed in 1867. Railroads developed densely across Iowa’s landscape, peaking in 1915 at 10,566 miles of track. When competing modes, such as trucks and automobiles became available, the railroad system was oversaturated. These modes provided a much faster alternative to the horse-drawn wagon trips that were used in earlier times to access the railroad system. Since the early 20th century, market forces have reduced the Iowa railroad network in terms of track miles, even as freight volume has risen steadily. The development patterns of Iowa towns were greatly shaped by the presence of railroads. This is evident when one looks at the distribution of towns and state and county highways along the state’s primary railroad corridors. Some towns appeared with the advent of a grain-loading elevator, steam engine water tower or railroad interchange.
