Casting on a Seam Stitch
WOOLWIND/INTARSIA This technique is used to knit blocks of different colours, avoiding the extra bulk of Fair Isle knitting. When using this method, you will need a separate ball for each section of colour. The colour twist method involves twisting the different coloured yarns over each other to prevent holes. Twist the colour to be used underneath and to the right of the colour just used. Always change colours on the wrong side of the work so colour change does not show on right side. Traveling Stitches: Origins of Fair Isle Knitting Deborah Pulliam Box 667, Castine ME 04421 207 326 9582 [email protected] The tradition of Fair Isle knitting seems to have been emerged too well developed to have actually started in the islands north of Scotland. This paper suggests a source in the Baltic region of Eastern Europe. Like much of the “history” of knitting, much published information on the history of Fair Isle-type knitting is folklore. The long-standing story is that a ship, El Gran Grifon, from the Spanish Armada, was wrecked on Fair Isle in 1588. The 17 households on the island took the sailors in. That much is true, and documented. The knitting story is that, in return, the Spaniards taught the islanders the brightly colored patterned knitting now known as Fair Isle. Not surprisingly, there appears to have been no multi-colored knitting tradition in Spain in the sixteenth century. -

The pattern should work with any DK yarn with nice drape: cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo blends are ideal. The blue dress is knitted in Debbie Bliss Amalfi (70% Cotton, 15% Rayon, 10% Linen, 5% Silk), the orange dress is made with Jaeger Trinity (Silk, Cotton, Nylon). Sizes: 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 years Actual sizes: 60, 64, 67 cm (24”, 25”, 26.5”) measured under the arms around the body. Level: Easy. Advanced beginner, know how to decrease stitches. There are short rows in the yoke.
