Once on the intercity express, we settled down to a comfortable journey, through the Swiss countryside, towards the Alps. We passed Lake Zurich and the Walensee, meeting the Rhine as it flows into Liectenstein, and then changed to the UNESCO World Heritage Albula railway at Chur. Dramatic scenery and many loops, tunnels and bridges followed, as we made our way through the Alps. After passing through the long Preda tunnel, we entered a sunny Engadine and made a third change, at Samedan, for the short ride to Pontresina. We transferred to the hotel by minibus and met the remaining two members of our group, before enjoying a lovely evening meal. After a brief talk about the plans for the week, we retired to bed. Day 2 Monday 9th July After a 20-minute walk from the hotel, we caught the 9.06am train at Surovas. We had a scenic introduction to the geography of the region, as we travelled south along the length of Val Bernina, crossing the watershed beside Lago Bianco and alighting at Alp Grum. -

Paolo Romagnoli & Bruno Foggi Vascular Flora of the upper Sestaione Valley (NW-Tuscany, Italy) Abstract Romagnoli, P. & Foggi B.: Vascular Flora of the upper Sestaione Valley (NW-Tuscany, Italy). — Fl. Medit. 15: 225-305. 2005. — ISSN 1120-4052. The vascular flora of the Upper Sestaione valley is here examined. The check-list reported con- sists of 580 species, from which 8 must be excluded (excludendae) and 27 considered doubtful. The checked flora totals 545 species: 99 of these were not found during our researches and can- not be confirmed. The actual flora consists of 446 species, 61 of these are new records for the Upper Sestaione Valley. The biological spectrum shows a clear dominance of hemicryptophytes (67.26 %) and geophytes (14.13 %); the growth form spectrum reveals the occurrence of 368 herbs, 53 woody species and 22 pteridophytes. From phytogeographical analysis it appears there is a significant prevalence of elements of the Boreal subkingdom (258 species), including the Orohypsophyle element (103 species). However the "linkage groups" between the Boreal subkingdom and Tethyan subkingdom are well represented (113 species). Endemics are very important from the phyto-geographical point of view: Festuca riccerii, exclusive to the Tuscan- Emilian Apennine and Murbeckiella zanonii exclusive of the Northern Apennine; Saxifraga aspera subsp. etrusca and Globularia incanescens are endemic to the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine and Apuan Alps whilst Festuca violacea subsp. puccinellii is endemic to the north- ern Apennines and Apuan Alps. The Apennine endemics total 11 species. A clear relationship with the Alpine area is evident from 13 Alpine-Apennine species. The Tuscan-Emilian Apennine marks the southern distribution limit of several alpine and northern-central European entities. -

It serves as the basic document for the virtual excursion offered in lesson B1 (Alpine plant biodiversity) of the ALPECOLe course. Naturally, the guide can also be helpful for a real excursion in the field! By following the road map, that begins on page 3, you can determine the plant community you are looking at. Communities you have to know for the final test are indicated with bold frames in the road maps. On the portrait sheets you will find a short description of each plant community. Here, the names of communities you should know are underlined. The portrait sheets are structured as follows: • After the English name of the community the corresponding phytosociological units are in- dicated, i.e. the association (Ass.) and/or the alliance (All.). The names of the units follow El- lenberg (1996) and Grabherr & Mucina (1993). • The paragraph “site characteristics” provides information on the altitudinal occurrence of the community, its topographical situation, the types of substrata, specific climate conditions, the duration of snow-cover, as well as on the nature of the soil. Method- Similar quantity doses of methylcycopropene were sprayed on different plants on different time and frequency of same concentration. Results were compared to untreated plant. Findings- scabiosa caucasica is sensitive to Methylcyclopropene. Certain amount of MCP aids quality of plant. Applications- methylcycopropene can be used on scabiosa caucasica to extent it’s post harvest life. Keywords- Methylcyclopropene , yield, plant height, petal per flower, flower diameter, average life of flower I. INTRODUCTION 1-Methylcyclopropene (MCP) belongs to a class of compounds called cyclopropenes. MCP has a structure, which is closely related to natural plant hormone- ethylene. It is commercially used to regulate ripening of fruits and vegetables and maintain the freshness of cut flowers. 1-MCP is comparatively new product for edible horticultural crops, and registration for its commercial use is still ongoing in several countries. MCP has received a good response in market due to its economical utility of preserving fruits and vegetables, leading to wide spread usage worldwide. MCP can increase storage time of apples upto 300% to 400% (J.R. Schupp, et al. 2008) allowing farmers to sell their produce in offseason yielding higher profits. For the past few years, the commercial form of 1-MCP has been used on postharvest on apples and other edible horticultural crops. -
