My name is Kim Garber, and I will be interviewing Dr. Thomas Frist, Jr., chairman emeritus of HCA Holdings, Inc. In the 1960s, together with his father, Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr., Dr. Frist conceived of a company that would own or manage multiple hospitals, providing high quality care and leveraging economies of scale. Founded in 1968, the Hospital Corporation of America, now known as HCA, has owned or managed hundreds of hospitals. Known as the First Family of Nashville, the Frists have made substantial contributions to Music City through their work with the Frist Foundations and other initiatives. -

The city is a center for the music, healthcare, publishing, banking and transportation industries, and is home to numerous colleges and universities. The city is known as a center of the music industry, earning it the nickname "Music City". Although Nashville is renowned as a music recording center and tourist destination, its largest industry is healthcare. Nashville is home to more than 300 healthcare companies, including Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), the largest private operator of hospitals in the world. As of 2012, it is estimated that the health care industry contributes $30 billion per year and 200,000 jobs to the Nashville-area economy. The automotive industry is another major economic generator within Middle Tennessee region. Nissan North America recently moved its corporate headquarters to nearby Franklin. Nissan also has its largest North American manufacturing plant in Smyrna, TN. Bridgestone is another major player in the area with their headquarters located in Nashville along with manufacturing plants and a distribution center in adjacent counties.
