Burkina Faso Unity-Progress-Justice” The official flag of Burkina Faso The rural countryside Woman in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso 1 Location and Geography Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa and is around 274,200 square kilometres in size. It is surrounded by six other nations: Mali to the north, Niger to the east, Benin to the southeast, Togo and Ghana to the south, and the Ivory Coast to the southwest. As of 2014, it had an estimated population of 17.3 million people. It is home to 42 people per square kilometer. The capital of Burkina Faso is Ouagadougou. This country is made up of two types of land. Majority of the country is covered by a peneplain, with a few isolated hills. However, the southwest of the country is the opposite. It forms a sandstone massif and houses the highest peak in Burkina Faso—Mount Tenakourou. At an elevation of 749 meters (or 2,457 ft), Mount Tenakourou stands out in the relatively flat country which averages an altitude of 400 meters. Mount Tenakourou The country we know as Burkina Faso was formerly known as the Republic of Upper Volta up until 1984. It owes its former name to the three rivers which run across it. The Black Volta, the White Volta, and the Red Volta. The Black Volta is one of only two rivers which flows year round and is a primary source of water to many animals, and sadly, people. Summary of CPWF Research in the Volta River Basin

February 2004 Water Resources and Environmental Management in Ghana Kwabena KANKAM-YEBOAH*, Philip GYAU-BOAKYE**, Makoto NISHIGAKI*** and Mitsuru KOMATSU*** (Received December 3, 2003) Three principal river basins are found in Ghana and the Volta River Basin is the major one, covering about three-quarters of Ghana. The basin is shared with Mali, Burkina Faso, Cote d'lvoire, Togo and Benin. Water from the Volta River Basin is used for drinking water supply, generating hydro-electric power, irrigation, inland fisheries and lake transport. The sustainable management of the Volta River Basin is thus of great importance. Land use activities in the basin are thus closely monitored not only in Ghana, but also in the other riparian countries as well. This paper presents information and data on the water resources and environmental management of the Volta River Basin in Ghana. Epidemiological Evaluations: 1.1 In the original Programme area Epidemiological evaluations were undertaken in more than 115 villages in basins amoung which are the Comoe, Leraba, Mouhoun (Volta Noire), Sissili, Koulpeologo, Nakambe (White Volta), Nazinon (Red Volta) and Oti-Pendjari rivers basins in Burkina Faso; Bandam4 Bou, Baoule, Comoe rivers basins in C6te d'Ivoire; Black, White and Red Volta, Kulpawn/Irrtole, Sissili, Oti and Daka rivers basins in Ghana; Bagoe, Banifing [V, Bani-Yame, Farako-Lotio rivers basins in Mali; tributaries of the Niger river basin in Niger in the original Programme area where vector confiol was stopped over 9 years ago. This was a continuation of an exercise that was started towards the end of 1997 and is planned to be completed this year. The overall results were generally excellent in most of the basins under epidemiological surveillance, with prevalence remaining at 0% in most places. The results are not satisfactory in the basins which are still under ivermectin teatuent like Kulpawn/Tvlole (Prevalenceof 23.9Yo at Bielikpong) and Oti (Prevalence of 23.8% at Kuntuli).in Ghana. 1.2 Evaluations in the extension areas Follow-up evaluations were carried out in 155 villages mainly in Burkina Faso and in the extension areas of the Programme in Benin, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Senegal and Togo in basins where there was either combined lanriciding and ivermectin freatnent or ivermectin teatnent alone. -

Epidemiological evaluations Epidemiologicalevaluations were carried out in 115 villages in both the original OCP area and in the extension areas. Twenty four of these villages on the Alibori river in Niger, Mekrou (Benin), Oti-Penjari (Togo and Ghana) the Black Volta (Ghana Burkina Faso and Cote d'lvoire) and the 'Nzi (Gote d'Mdre) were evaluated to help with the decision of stopping larviciding. ln the extension areas the villages, were evaluated as part of the start of the incidence surveys for the evaluation of vector contro!. The results from the villages in these five river basins were on the whole excellent with the observed prevalence and CMFL trends following closely the computer predictions. There were however the presence of new infections in at least on Mllage each on four of the river basins. The results from the Black Volta were relatively poor. The results from the other villages ranged from poor (prevalence of 49.7olo) in the villages on the 'Nzi/Bandama in lvory Coast to good (prevalence of 6.90lo) on several of the other river basins. Epidemiological evaluations based on incidence have been started in villages where in addition to larviciding mectizan is being applied. ln such villages placebo is given to individuals found to be negative at the pre treatment parasitological examination. Results are expected after the next round of evaluations. 2. Ophthalmological surveys. -

Oppong (Head of Department) Plate 1: A family of elephants in the Red Volta ii Abstract This study investigated the degree to which crop-raiding by elephants in localities of the Red Volta Valley is a function of the density/diversity of their natural browse, extent of degradation of their habitat, their local abundance, size of crop field, and the proximity of crop enclaves to the forest reserve. Farm enumerators estimated the size of crop fields and the area damaged by elephants, and graded the growth and quality of affected crops. Incidents were plotted along a 12 month time series, and the location of fields was recorded with a GPS.
