Literature-Based Survey on the Swiss Fauna of Chilopoda
SOIL ORGANISMS Volume 81 (3) 2009 pp. 647–669 ISSN: 1864 - 6417 Literature-based survey on the Swiss fauna of Chilopoda Edi Stöckli Natural History Museum Basel, Augustinergasse 2, CH-4001 Basel, Switzerland; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract The Swiss centipede fauna has never been fully reviewed. Even though the first records date from 1845, a checklist has not been drawn up until now. Literature research based on 88 publications and 2 online databases offers a preliminary list of 62 species and 1 subspecies. Type species from the Swiss area are specified. Additional potential species are named and might be added in the future to a complete checklist incorporating almost 90 species. Keywords: fauna, Chilopoda, literature, species list, Switzerland 1. Introduction Research into the Diplopoda and the Chilopoda in Switzerland demonstrates two totally different levels. For the Diplopoda there is an excellent work by Ariane Pedroli-Christen dating from 1993. It covers the fauna and ecology of 127 species and presents their global and Swiss distribution (for Switzerland in a 5 x 5 km grid!). Unfortunately, she abandoned her scientific work some years ago and has no successor in Switzerland working with this group at such a level. In contrast, the Swiss centipedes have not had such an intensive level of study. Up to the end of 2008 a published checklist was not available, not even a preliminary one. This may seem surprising, as most of the surrounding countries or areas already possess such lists. As examples may be named Austria (Würmli 1972b: 71 species), France (Geoffroy & Iorio 2009: 145 species) or Italy (Checklist of the species of the Italian fauna 2003: 155 species). -

Brisbane. ISSN0079-8835. Aconsolidated list of available generic names introduced since the beginning of the binomial nomenclature system for trilobites is presented for the first time. Each entry is accompanied by the author and date of availability, by the name of the type species, by a lithostratigraphic or biostratigraphic and geographic reference for the type species, by a family assignment and by an age indication of the type species at the Period level (e.g. MCAM, LDEV). A second listing of these names is taxonomically arranged in families with the families listed alphabetically, higher level classification being outside the scope of this work. Oltre alla passione per questa classe di artropodi, i suoi interessi sono orientati alle forme di vita vissute nel Precambriano, stromatoliti, e fossilizzazioni tipo konservat-lagerstätte. Carlo Kier nato a Milano nel 1961, Carlo si è laureato in Legge, ed è attualmente presidente della catena di alberghi Azul Hotel. Risiede a Cancun, Messico, dove si dedica ad attività legate all'ambiente marino. One species, Eurythoe laevisetis, occurs in the eastern and cen- tral Mediterranean, likely constituting the first historical introduction to the Mediterranean Sea and the other, Eurythoe complanata, in both eastern and Levantine basins. Brief notes on their taxonomy are also provided and their potential pathways for introduction to the Mediterranean are discussed. -

Because there were so many, it was decided to vote for a name by ballot and talley the results at the June meeting. One ballot is enclosed in this Newsletter. Please bring it to the next meeting or mail it to Ann Martin by June 11. Make additional copies of the ballot for each member of your Company. Dues Unfortunately dues are going to be ch-arged. The dues will help defray costs incurred for storing the reference collection, paper, postage, and other unforeseen expenses. Dues will be $5.00 per year beginning June, 1982. Learning Goals and Pedagogy This lab is designed for middle level General Science or Earth Science classes. The learning goals for this lab are the following: 1) to familiarize students with the anatomy and terminology relating to trilobites; 2) to give students experience identifying morphologic structures on real fossil specimens 3) to highlight major events or trends in the evolutionary history and ecology of the Trilobita; and 4) to expose students to the study of macroevolution in the fossil record using trilobites as a case study. Introduction to the Trilobites The Trilobites are an extinct subphylum of the Arthropoda (the most diverse phylum on earth with nearly a million species described). Arthropoda also contains all fossil and living crustaceans, spiders, and insects as well as several other extinct groups. The trilobites were an extremely important and diverse type of marine invertebrates that lived during the Paleozoic Era. They only lived in the oceans but occurred in all types of marine environments, and ranged in size from less than a centimeter to almost a meter across. They were once one of the most successful of all animal groups and in certain fossil deposits, especially in the Cambrian, Ordovician, and Devonian periods, they are extremely abundant. -
