Introduction

This report analyzes Latin American and Iberian Collections held by LANE libraries with the ultimate goal of providing a useful tool that will facilitate and promote cooperation in collection building.

Data is obtained by searching OCLC Worldcat First Search database. The scope of this report is to analyze the number of books held in each institution since 1966, grouped in periods of 10 years by language, country of origin and year of publication (Parts 1, 2 and 3). For major countries (Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and Spain) annual data since 1999 is also provided. By “books” this report refers only to monographs. Multi‐volume titles are only counted once. This report excludes any other material collected in different formats such as periodical, microfilms, videos, DVD, etc.

Data on Latin America countries are separated from data on Iberian countries in different categories as much as possible throughout this report to respect the different methodologies used by many LANE institutions.

Every LANE institution is included in this report except Temple University (no records found in OCLC) and all European libraries. LANE Institutions with many libraries in OCLC have been included. To obtain a potential national comparison, two libraries outside of LANE have been also included: University of Texas‐Austin and Stanford University. (See Libraries considered in this report (below) and Part 6:2 Library Codes)

For Books published in any country in Spanish or Portuguese languages, data results do not include any subject parameter. For books published in other languages (English, French, Italian and German), data results are obtained by including subject parameters. (See Part 6.1 Search String used in this report, where there is a brief explanation of the criteria used)

Part 4 includes a synthesis of previous tables providing total figures in single tables and charts that include percentages.

Part 5 provides data showing duplication among all Borrow Direct institutions plus Harvard. Duplication as understood in the OCLC database means institutions that have exactly the same book. This data does not include same books published in different years, or same books published in different countries or same intellectual work published again years later.

Part 6 describes the parameters used in this report. If someone wants to customize, modify or improve data from this report, they can reuse the search strings included in this part.

Although the OCLC database is a very powerful tool for comparing information among many different institutions, we need to read carefully this data due to some inherent problems:

1) Many institutions have large backlogs of material not included yet in OCLC. LANE Institutions have included few books published in 2009. Major research libraries may have old collections without processing. 2) OCLC database may include many different records for the same book. 3) The same record may include two different years or two different countries or two different languages.

Unfortunately this report talks mainly about quantity‐‐ not quality. Although no single tool is known to help define what is a “good” Latin American Collection, quantity is used often in Area Studies as the quintaesence that provides the definition of what is a good library. My intention in writing this report is basically to provoke the contrary: to Page | 5 spark a conversation among institutionsthat leads to a collaboration that will help users from the East of United States to access more and better resources from Latin America and Iberia culture.
