15 LC 108 0380 House Resolution 957 By: Representatives Smyre of the 135th, Mosby of the 83rd, and Williams of the 168th A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the life and memory of Marion Barry; and for other purposes. 2 WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of a great Civil Rights leader and public 3 servant with the passing of Marion Barry; and 4 WHEREAS, Marion Barry was born on March 6, 1936, in Itta Bena, Mississippi; and 5 WHEREAS, he earned a degree in chemistry from LeMoyne College in 1958, and while 6 earning his graduate degree in chemistry at Fisk University he organized a campus chapter 7 of the NAACP; and 8 WHEREAS, he was one of the student leaders who met with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in 9 1960 to establish the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and he was elected that 10 organization's first national chairman; and 11 WHEREAS, Marion Barry was elected mayor of Washington, D.C., in 1978, 1982, 1986, 12 and 1994, and during his tenure, he transformed that city from a jurisdiction run by the 13 federal government into a self-governing city and a mecca for African American politicians, 14 government administrators, businessmen, and intellectuals; and 15 WHEREAS, he was a dynamic leader, a wonderful friend, and a strategic master who strove 16 to serve the citizens of the District of Columbia to the best of his ability; and 17 WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Marion Barry will long be remembered for 18 his love of the District of Columbia, and this loyal public servant and friend will be missed 19 by all who had the great fortune of knowing him. -

Introduction R. J. Ellis One of the most influential books ever written, Uncle Tom’s Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly was also one of the most popular in the nineteenth century. Stowe wrote her novel in order to advance the anti-slavery cause in the ante-bellum USA, and rooted her attempt to do this in a ‘moral suasionist’ approach — one designed to persuade her US American compatriots by appealing to their God-given sense of morality. This led to some criticism from immediate abolitionists — who wished to see slavery abolished immediately rather than rely upon [per]suasion. Uncle Tom's Cabin was first published in 1852 as a serial in the abolitionist newspaper National Era . It was then printed in two volumes in Boston by John P. Jewett and Company later in 1852 (with illustrations by Hammatt Billings). The first printing of five thousand copies was exhausted in a few days. Jewett and Co., 1852 During 1852 several reissues were printed from the plates of the first edition; each reprinting also appearing in two volumes, with the addition of the words ‘Tenth’ to ‘One Hundred and Twentieth Thousand’ on the title page, to distinguish between each successive re-issue. Later reprintings of the two-volume original carried even higher numbers. These reprints appeared in various bindings — some editions being quite lavishly bound. One-volume versions also appeared that same year — most of these being pirated editions. From the start the book attracted enormous attention. -

HOW, AND TO WHAT EXTENT, DID THE NATURE OF CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVISM PERPETUATE GENDER OPPRESSION AND HINDER THE WORK OF BLACK FEMALE ACTIVISTS IN THE MOVEMENT? Research Paper for History 344: US Social Movements Anna Chulack Chulack 1 Examining interracial relations is of great pertinence when analysing U.S. history since understanding how people of colour are perceived, as well as the difficulties that they face, today requires being aware of the long-lasting influences of slavery and segregation. The Civil Rights Movement is an important turning point in the history of the black freedom struggle, as it gave black people the chance to participate politically (through nonviolent protest) in a mass campaign to end Jim Crow. Sadly, however, the women of the movement have, for the most part, been overlooked or forgotten in the larger context of contemporary activism. At the time, they made up “a powerful, yet invisible network”i that has continued to be “invisible” today. This lack of recognition has occurred despite that black women oftentimes carried out essential activities in propelling the movement forward.ii We can attribute this injustice to gender oppression, which was prevalent in all aspects of the movement. The perpetuation of sexism by the black church, male activist attitudes and actions towards female activists, and the male-dominated hierarchy of many civil rights groups all worked to discourage the activism that women undertook, as well as disable women from being promoted to positions of official leadership in the movement. The role that the black church played in the Civil Rights Movement is important to assess in order to analyse why the oppression of black women within the church so greatly affected how women engaged with the movement and the roles that they took up. -

TISDALE PRESIDENT, CLAFLIN UNIVERSITY CHAIR, GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE, UNCF Introduction Good afternoon, Congressman McClintock, Congresswoman Tsongas and Members of the Subcommittee. Thank you for holding this hearing and the opportunity to testify on H.R. 295 – legislation to reauthorize the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Historic Preservation Program, sponsored by Congressman Clyburn. I am Henry Tisdale, president of Claflin University, located in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Claflin University was founded 147 years ago and we take pride in being the oldest HBCU in South Carolina. We are a private, four-year liberal arts university, enrolling approximately 2000 students. Our students are predominantly low- income, African-American students who are the first in their families to attend college. Claflin is part of a network of 106 private and public HBCUs across the country established as early as 1837 to provide African Americans with access to higher education. I also chair the Government Affairs Committee of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), which has a 72- year partnership with 37 private HBCUs, including Claflin University. HBCU historic preservation was a signature UNCF initiative from 1995 through 1999 when UNCF partnered with the National Park Service to support the rehabilitation of historic structures on ten HBCU campuses. HBCUs and their campuses have a significant place in American history, including serving as the first educational institutions for former slaves and freedmen, repositories of important books/papers/memorabilia of Black history, and as meeting places during the civil rights struggles of the 1900s. -

Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® Civil rights activist Reverend James Luther Bevel was born in Itta Bena, Mississippi, on October 19, 1936. After a stint in the services, Bevel was called to the ministry and enrolled in the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee. While in the Seminary, Bevel joined the Nashville chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), then led by the Reverend James Lawson. In 1960, Bevel and other black students trained by Lawson, including John Lewis, Dianne Nash, Marion Barry, and Bernard Lafayette, organized sit-ins against segregated lunch counters. Eventually Bevel and his colleagues won a hard- fought, nonviolent victory; soon after, as chairman of the Nashville student movement, Bevel participated in Freedom Rides to desegregate interstate travel and public accommodations throughout the South. -
