SWAIN, C.M. ACADEMIC HERALDRY The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students of those days wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th century castles and halls of learning. The gown for the bachelor's degree has a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. It is primarily distinguished by its long pointed sleeves. The holder of a master's degree wears a gown with the same yoke effect as the bachelor's. The gown, however, is worn open, and the very long sleeve is squared and closed at the end, the forearm coming through a slit near the elbow. The gown for the doctor's degree is also worn open, it has broad velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the large, bell-like sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the field oflearning to which the degree pertains. Generally, all caps may be of serge or broadcloth. In addition, doctor's caps may be of velvet and adorned by a gold tassel. The hood gives color and distinction to the academic costume. The hood - a black shell-like affair of varying size for the three degrees and material to match the gown - is silk-lined stressing the colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is then bordered with v~lvet of the color signifying the respective fields of learning.

The colors indicative of the various fields of learning are as follows: Arts and Letters ...... White Library Science ...... Lemon Laws ...... Purple Education ...... Light Blue Philosophy ...... Blue Science ...... Golden Yellow Fine Arts ...... Brown Business Administration . . . Light Brown Pharmacy ...... Green

It is important to note that the field of learning having prior mention in the conferment of a degree, and not the department governing the major work, determines the color that is proper for the velvet of the hood. The doctor of philosophy degree requires the blue velvet irrespective of the major field. If more than one degree is held, the gown and hood of the highest degree are worn. Some of the institutional colors to be seen at an academic ceremony are as follows: Catholic University, lemon yellow with white chevron; Columbia, light blue with white chevron; Fordham, maroon; Harvard, crimson; Manhattan, white with emerald green chevron; New York University, violet; St.Joh n's University, bright red with white chevron. .§t. CITATION for THE PRESIDENT'S MEDAL LAWRENCE K. REISMAN

A Criminal Justice major in Notre Dame College, Lawrence K. Reisman has gained the admiration and respect of his collegiate peers by maintaining a high record of scholarship while being engaged in a variety of time-consuming and responsible campus activities. Born in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn 22 years ago, Larry is the second of four children born to Zane and Joan Reisman. He graduated from both P .S. No. 22 and Port Richmond High School, Staten Island. At the latter institution, he was a prominent member of the Arista Honor Society, in addition to playing varsity football and baseball. A major index of 3.600 and a cumulative index of 3.394 merited for this graduate consistent inclusion on the Dean's List during his four years on the Staten Island campus. Elected vice president of his class during freshman and sophomore years, and president in the junior year, Larry climaxed his accomplishments in senior year by his election to the Executive Board Presidency of Student Government. In that capacity he has held the sensitive responsibility of coordinating the activities of approximately 20 organizations on the Staten Island campus. Nominated to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, our honoree was also elected by his peers last year to prestigious membership in the President's Society. A member of Lambda Kappa Phi, the Notre Dame Honor Society, Larry has also served as President of Sigma Chi Upsilon, a fraternity whose aim is to foster a high level of Christian morals among contemporary youth. At different times our Medalist has been Vice President and President of the Weight-Lifting Club, as well as a member of The Vincentian Society, whose members provide tangible assistance for the orphans at Angel Guardian Home and other im poverished people on Staten Island during festive seasons of the year. In addition to being Chairperson of both the Autumn Ball in his Junior Year, and the Orientation Committee in his Senior Year, Larry devoted considerable energy to promoting this year's Dance Marathon which raised almost $20,000 for the American Cancer Society. An avid sports enthusiast, Larry has participated for four years in the intramural sports program including football, basketball, bowling, and softball. Despite the many pressures on his time and talents, our honoree has managed to work part-time during the past four years at his father's dry-cleaning establishment in Canarsie. He plans to attend St. John's Graduate Division of the College of Business Administration in pursuit of a Master's degree in Accounting. With admiration and pride, St. John's University confers her symbol of high esteem, The President's Medal, upon Lawrence K. Reisman.
