    BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 54(1): 281-296, 1994 VARIATION IN SETTLEMENT AND LARVAL DURATION OF KlNG GEORGE WHITING, SILLAGINODES PUNCTATA (SILLAGINIDAE), IN SWAN BAY, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA Gregory P. Jenkins and Helen M. A. May ABSTRACT Otoliths were examined from late-stage larvae and juveniles of King George whiting, Sillaginodes punctata, collected from Swan Bay in spring 1989. Increments in otoliths of larval S. punctata are known to be formed daily. A transition in the microstructure of otoliths from late-stage larvae was apparently related to environmental changes associated with entry to Port Phillip Bay. The pattern of abundance of post-larvae of S. punctata in fortnightly samples supported the contention that the transition was formed immediately prior to "set- tlement" in seagrass habitats. Backcalculation to the otolith transition suggested that five cohorts had entered Swan Bay, each approximately 10 days apart, from late September to early November. Stability of this pattern for juveniles from sequential samples indicated that otolith increments continued to be formed daily in the juvenile stage. The pattern of settlement was consistent for two sites within Swan Bay. The larval phase of King George whiting settling in Port Phillip Bay was extremely long and variable, ranging from approximately 100 to 170 days. Age at settlement was more variable than length, and growth rate at settlement was I I extremely slow, approximately 0.06 mm ·d- • • Backcalculated hatching dates ranged from April to JUly. July. Increment widths in the larval stage suggest that growth slows after approxi- mately 45 to 75 days; beyond which individuals are in a slow growth, competent stage of 40 to 100 days.

Asset Sand Islands and Shoals Description A crest of sand which rises above water level from a broad marine sand bank, forming an unstable sand island - Troubridge Island - which changes shape and size over time. The island is about 5m high at high tide, and about 2 hectares in area when inundated, but considerable larger at low tide. The island is surrounded by shallow sand embankments (Troubridge Shoals). Oceanography At the bottom of Gulf St Vincent, off the eastern “heel” of Yorke Peninsula, waters less than 20m occur up to 10km from shore. The oceanographic conditions have led to a long-term build-up of sand in some areas, including the creation of Troubridge Island, a sand island about 7km east of Sultana Point.

Hamer1 'Marine and Freshwater Resources Institute, PO Box 114, Queenscliff, 3225 Victoria, Australia 2Centre of Excellence in Coastal Oceanography and Marine Geology, Ruakura Satellite Campus, University of Waikato, PB3105 Hamilton, New Zealand ABSTRACT: We used larval durat~onestimated from otoliths of post-larval King George whiting Silla- ginodes punctata collected from bays and inlets of central Victoria, Australia, and reverse simulation with a numerical hydrodynamic model, to estimate spawning sites and larval advection pathways. Larval duration increased from west to east for post-larvae entering Port Phillip Bay, Western Port and Corner Inlet. The period of recruitment to bays and inlets was relatively fixed; the longer larval dura- tions were associated with earlier spawning times. Larval durations for post-larvae entering Port Phillip Bay were longer for 1989 compared with 1994 and 1995. Reverse modelling based on larval durations for the 3 bays in 1995 suggested that most post-larvae were derived from spawning in western Victoria and southeastern South Australia. The centre of the predicted spawning &stribution was ca 400 to 500 km from the recruitment sites and the region of intense spawning was spread along approximately 300 km of coastline. For Corner Inlet, however, a small proportion of the spawning may have occurred in central Victoria, within 200 km of the recruitment site, with larvae transported in a clockw~segyre around Bass Strait.

    1 This comprehensive guide to fishing on Kangaroo Island has been kindly supplied by Shane Mensforth, Editor of SA Angler Magazine www.saangler.com.au KINGSCOTE/BAY OF SHOALS Kingscote, the Island’s “capital”, is situated between the Bay of Shoals and Nepean Bay and offers a good choice of boat, jetty and shore fishing. A long sand spit extends in an easterly direction some 5km from the western side of the Bay of Shoals. The waters on the south side of the spit provide good fishing for whiting, gar, salmon trout and big sand crabs. A deep channel runs along the southern side and is easily accessed from the boat ramp. Whiting hug the edges of the channel, along with good numbers of plump salmon trout which are great sport on trolled lures and light tackle. Tides run strongly through the channels, so sinker weight should be changed accordingly. Garfish are most common over the weed beds directly east of the boat ramp and these can be caught on light gear or dabbed at night with the aid of a spotlight and long handled net. Large sand crabs — considered by most to be the equal of blue swimmers to eat — can be drop netted over the Bay of Shoals sand patches or near the channel markers east of the boat ramp. At the eastern end of the spit are the north and south beacons that indicate the width of the spit at this point. Whiting can be caught in good numbers between the beacons in either the deeper areas or on the sandy patches in the shallows.

    TARGET SPECIES. KING GEORGE WHITING. HABITAT. In our whiting season from September through to April, King George Whiting are generally found in or around sand holes, near grass beds, on the tops of banks at or near high tide. Along the drop off edges of these banks and channels, and in water depths between 1.5 meters and 4.5 meters [5 feet and 25 feet]. In deeper water they will be close to light reef or in the broken bottom areas of our bays and close inshore reef areas around the coast of Victoria. BAIT. Mussel, Pipis, Squid, Cuttlefish, Octopus, Bass Yabbies, Prawns, Marine Worms and cut Pilchard Fillets. Prepare enough shellfish bait the day before. Shuck the thawed frozen pipis and keep the pipis in a suitable plastic storage container, Shuck fresh mussels and store in a similar plastic storage container. Place these containers into the fridge until you are ready to go fishing. Keep the shells in a bucket for your hand berly. BERLEY. A MUST. Crushed mussels in berley bags suspended 30 centimetres[one foot] above the bottom and attached to the rear of the boat. In fast current, the crushed mussels are placed in an onion bag tied to the anchor chain. When fishing along the banks and in the drop offs, a berley of chook pellets soaked overnight in tuna oil and mixed with mussel or pipi shells is thrown into likely sand holes close to the boat, and as soon as whiting are located. TERMINAL RIGS. Prepare the rigs at home when fishing in competitions.
