Every day hundreds of chronically ill people with severe kidney problems rely on artificial kidney machines and skilled medical technologists to cleanse their blood allowing them to lead relatively normal productive lives. Oxygenation technology -- the use of a by-pass pump to perpetuate blood circulation during open heart surgery -- has been used successfully for more than 15 years. The system, it is anticipated, may be used for longer periods to give a malfunctioning heart two or three days' rest.
