David Humphrey Riley Stent Full Season Cricketer Half Season Cricketer of the Year 2016-2017 of the Year 2016-17 Open Division Falcon Hawks Open Division Sea Hawks The President’s Bat

Welcome to our first Hawk Talk edition for 2017/2018. I would like to send a special welcome to all those new families with the Hawks this season. This year we have a record 35 teams playing from U8 through to our Open division which is U16 to U18. This season, as with last season, we have two half season competitions, a pre–Xmas and post-Xmas competition. With these two separate competitions before and after Xmas so it will be possible for your team to win two competitions throughout the full season. After Xmas when some players go off to play for their schools, we will re-arrange teams to fill any vacancies. This is usually only for teams from U12 upwards. This year we will be again sending out the Hawk Talk electronically. This reduces costs and certainly takes a load off the time spent by our Editor, Eddie Mills. It also allows us more flexibility to highlight the various products of our very generous sponsors. Thank you to all those people who have volunteered to be coaches or managers. This season we only had to find a few new coaches, mostly in the younger age groups, which says a great deal about our retention rate. The parents of this club appreciate the work that is being done by these wonderful people and have every confidence in the way their children are being cared for. Remember parents that this is your club and any help that you can offer makes life easier for coaches/managers/scorers and club officials. We are all volunteers. On training nights you can help out by being prompt when picking up children. Your team officials will not leave until all kids are collected so be considerate to them. On game days support your team and the opposition in a positive manner. Our children will model our behaviour. Winning humbly is as important as congratulating the opposition when they are successful. Scoring and umpiring can sometimes be very stressful so please help your team by being supportive of those who have put their hand up to do the tasks that provide games for your children. I would not like to see cricket as being a child minding service on Saturday mornings. Thank you to the Quin family for looking after the canteen on Friday night. It is getting busier and busier each week. Please support this operation as the lights alone cost the club around $80 each Friday evening and the canteen offsets this cost. I would also like to thank the ACE Netball Club which has kindly allowed our club the use of their toilet facility for Friday night cricket. It is far too dangerous for our young cricketers to have to go over to the old clubhouse building with cars and poor lighting around those premises. Congratulations to our hard working Registrar, John Murray who was honoured as the Cricket Volunteer of the Month at his team’s game on Saturday. Well deserved John.! I recommend that you support all the generous sponsors who make a significant contribution to our club and allow us to provide the excellent facilities and equipment to enable the players to achieve their playing potential. The Sponsor’s Spin

We recognise the fantastic contributions of

our valued sponsors.

We have many businesses that sponsor our club and this has enabled us to provide a sport at a reasonable cost and at the same time to keep your club financially sound. Please express your appreciation for the sponsors contributions by using these businesses wherever possible.

On behalf of the Albany Creek Hawks Cricket Club we sincerely thank

L.J. Hooker Albany Creek Hyperclean and Keith Dudgeon Cricket Specialist, Audit & Tax Accountants Albany Creek, Keith Dudgeon Cricket Specialist, Premier Cricket, Simply Pest Control and Zenith Promotions We look forward to all our sponsor’s continued support.

With much appreciated help from our sponsors, your club is able to provide you with an excellent standard of facilities at a comparatively low cost and we will strive to continue this in the future.

We sincerely thank Jason & Melinda Chandler of L.J. Hooker our club shirt sponsor and Cassie & Corie Morrad of Hyperclean our Friday Night Cricket sponsor for their valued assistance and hope that their business grows as a result of their association with the Albany Creek Hawks Cricket Club. Please keep our fields tidy and remove all rubbish at the end of training and matches, There are several rubbish bins placed around the net and field areas. This applies for all grounds used during the season, i.e. schools and opposition fields

Restrooms at all grounds are for everyone’s use and convenience. Please leave them in a tidy condition and report any issues to your team manager.

When entering the South Pine Sports Complex at any time, please travel at the signed speed limit for everyone’s safety, especially during night cricket when visibility is limited.

Please park only in designated parking spots and refrain from parking on lawns around the complex.

Please ensure that net and field lights are turned off at the end of training sessions. Non-club members can not utilise the lights at any times and the lock codes are made available to club coaches for Hawks members only .

We frequently find items left behind after matches or training. Please ensure to check your areas for any items before leaving the field. If you have left something behind you can email us on [email protected]. Generally any lost items are kept in our club canteen for a short period of time until claimed.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARENTS - TEAM PLACEMENT POLICY We do not grade players at Albany Creek Cricket Club. It is the policy of the club to attempt to place players according to the individual requests of the players. If no special requests are made, players will be placed in the appropriate age group. To make it simpler for existing players to register for the next season, we will provide pre-filled registration forms on our club sign-on weekend. Please note - the registration form and the club’s webpage form provides a special request section, so that parents can make requests for team placement as per examples: • Same team as last year • With • With players form ‘All Saints School’ Registrations are also accepted by mail, email or via MyCricket and the Hawks webpage. Please note that registration forms must still be completed for the MyCricket option and forwarded to the Registrar. Towards the end of each season we will publish the dates for next season’s sign-on weekend in the newsletter and on the club’s Webpage and Facebook page. We would also like to remind all parents to ensure that any changes in contact details are forwarded to the club to avoid missing out. Increasing player numbers each year make the administrative task of organising teams more difficult. At the beginning of each season our registrar invests a great deal of time reviewing all player requests before allocating players to individual teams. This commences on Sign-on weekend and continues over several weeks, with new registrations and late registrations coming in right until (and sometimes well after) the season’s first game. So please be sure about your special requests, it is extremely difficult to accommodate any late changes once the teams are formed. The process of sorting teams is long and involved and moving players around after it has started creates a logistical nightmare, especially since we also have to work around a deadline for nominating teams to the North Junior Cricket Association. We have in excess of nearly 300 players to keep happy, therefore if registrations are not received before and by the sign-on weekend, or the registrar is not advised of a player’s intent to return and preferred playing arrangements, special requests can only be met if there is room in the nominated team. From: The Albany Creek Cricket Club Committee

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION Any Cricket Problems? All Committee phone numbers are listed on page 3: You have all had a little time to settle in and see how your team is going. Are there any problems? Please don’t think now that the season has started that you are on your own. Phone and talk to any committee member or alternatively, approach your coach and we will try and fix what we can. Helmet Policy It is club policy that all Batsmen MUST wear a helmet when . -Keepers MUST wear a helmet if keeping up close to the stumps, regardless of the style of bowling. This is a Cricket and Brisbane North Junior Cricket Association rule and as such non-negotiable. NO HELMET—NO PLAY!! Batting Gloves Protectors Zone Rules 2.2 (d), (e), (f), (g) & (h) require ALL players to wear protection when batting - helmets, pads and gloves are available in each team kit. All players are issued with a personal protector when registering and MUST use them. Safety - Wet & Cold Playing cricket can be extremely hot, so please ensure that player safety is a priority when deciding on the need to leave the field for a spell or not. It is important to ensure that all players apply sunscreen before the match and re-apply during every break. Players should wear a wide-brimmed hat and take regular drink breaks throughout the innings. In the event of rain consider player safety when assessing the field conditions to avoid slipping and dangerous play. Do not commence the match if is deemed unsafe and wait for conditions to improve or make a decision to possibly abandon the match if necessary. DON’T PUT PLAYERS AT RISK!!! Coach’s Responsibilities The coach runs the team. The coach is responsible for preparation of the players and control during the match. Batting and bowling orders are the coach’s responsibility. It is recommended that from U13 upwards, a is appointed to the team, particularly when fielding. The Hawks expect ALL coaches to have a basic Level 1 Coaching Certificate. It is the coach’s responsibility to enforce the club’s helmet policy and ensure that players wear all protective equipment as outlined above. Manager’s Responsibilities The manager assists the coach with the team administration. The manager should ensure that rostered parents are available to attend canteen duties (as required), act as umpires, scorers and generally assist players and team management throughout the game and training, i.e. organising batsmen to get ready. Managers are responsible for the publication and recording of match results and team statistics. U8 to U10 match abstracts are to be emailed to our statistician directly, U11 to Open Divisions must enter their match stats into the MyCricket online database. Under 11 to Open managers will also forward player of the round nominations to BNJCA as outlined in the coach’s/ manager’s manual.

How Are The Winners Of Team Trophies Determined?

We like to remind everyone at the start of the season about how the trophy winners

are determined for the team awards, so here’s the drum:

At the end of the season, there are three trophies awarded for each team: 1. Batting Award 2. Bowling Award 3. Coaches Award In the past there has been some confusion as to how the winners of these trophies are determined. Set out below are the basic guidelines used to determine the winners:

1. The Batting Award is always decided first. The best average is used to determine the winner in senior grades [U11 – Open Divisions] while the junior grades [U8 – U10] are determined by the best aggregate total {unless there is a draw, in which case averages will be used to determine the winner]. For senior grades, this player MUST have played in 50% or more of the team matches and be in the top 50% of run scorers. The Batting Average is calculated by dividing the number of times the batter has been out into the total runs scored for the season e.g. 125 runs divided by 5 “outs” will give an average of 25.0.

2. The Bowling Award is decided second. [The winner of the Batting Award is not eligible for this award.] Again, the best average is used to determine the winner in senior grades [U11 – Open Divisions] while the junior grades [U8 – U10] are determined by the best aggregate total {unless there is a draw, in which case averages will be used to determine the winner]. For senior grades, this player MUST have played in 50% or more of the team matches and be in the top 50% of wicket takers. The is calculated by dividing the number of taken by the bowler into the number of runs scored against. e.g. 100 runs against divided by 5 wickets will give an average of 20.0. 3. The Coaches Award.is decided third. [The winners of the Batting or Bowling Award are not eligible for this award] This award is decided by the Coach and may be given for any reason what so ever. For example, the Coach may decide to award it to a player who may not have been amongst the best batters or bowlers but had displayed a great attitude towards the game, his team and his coach, both on match day and at training.

Individual Trophies!!

There are also lots of other trophies award for certain milestones and events. For example: • Hat Tricks • 5 or more Wickets in an Innings (U11– Open Divisions) • 4 x 50 runs in an innings (U11– Open Divisions) • Centuries • 50 Wickets in junior (U8-U10) or senior (U11– Open Divisions) age group • 1,000 Runs in junior (U8-U10) or senior (U11– Open Divisions) age group • Cricketer of the Year (U11– Open Divisions) • Half-Season Cricketer of the Year (U11– Open Divisions) Significant milestones and events are also tracked in our Honour Board. This is a wonderful living file that records an archive of our clubs history, including the top 10 junior and senior batsmen and bowlers for the season. If you haven’t seen it and are interested in receiving a copy of the file, please send an email to the club statistician on [email protected]. Please let me know if there is a problem with a certificate and I will re-issue it with the correct details. I know how important it is to have the correct name for the player and the team they play in, it’s a simple thing to fix. Senior Player Achievements

GAME REPORT: After a magnificent start in week 1 to post 289, and have the opposition at 4/87, we really thought we were a shoe in for an outright result. I am not sure whether it was complacency, just thinking it was going to happen, but we were pasted early on by one of their batsman, and they very nearly pulled off a miraculous victory. It was very tough going while their best bat kept hitting us all over the park, but we ably assisted him with too many full tosses and failure to be patient and bowl tight lines. It was a good test of our metal, and once we did get him, things went more our way, mostly through better line and length bowling. We need to learn that when a batsman is hitting out, that we do not need to keep trying different things to get him out. Attacking Albany Creek the top of off is the proven method, however we just did not go there Hawks consistently enough. Andrew was the stand out with the ball as well, and his bowling at the tail to tear through them to finish with 7/62 was a pleasure to watch. Danny Brown also bowled very well, and looked very dangerous. He Brisbane North turned the ball sharply, and was unlucky not to be rewarded with more Junior Cricket wickets. Our second innings, we bought the middle/lower order towards the top Association seeing as they did not bat in the first innings. At one stage, we lost 5 for 1, and were in serious jeopardy of losing the game outright. A focus on defence in the nets this week should be at the top of the list for all those guys with globes. Warehouse Andrew Beighton continues to shine well above all others, and we could all Cricket take a little something from his effort and application to improve our own Association games. 155 and 7/62 earns him the Man of the Match award for this game. Sam and Andrew threw everything at them, but the opposition were intent on surviving. Matt and Corie got the procession started, and we continually took wickets. We dropped a few catches, and could have been chasing a lot less. Sam made a sensational runout from short fine leg to remove the man giving us the most trouble, and from there we tore them up. We started well, with Col and Andrew putting on 77 for the first wicket, Danny and Andrew seeing us through to stumps, with only 20 runs to get. The rain fell all week, and threatened to wash us out, however we got a 2pm start on Day 2. The plan was to knock of the runs, declare and push for outright. We lost Andrew on the second ball of the day, and then fell in a heap to lose 6/13, and in real threat of losing first innings. Sam and Corie steadied and got us past the total, and we declared immediately. The wicket was perfect for Andrew's bowling, and he made the most of it, taking 3/9. It could have been better but for some chances just not quite carrying. For the most part, we bowled well, but one batsman in particular was intent of surviving and played a great innings. There is a lot that can be learned for our batsman in watching his innings. He was ugly to watch, but intent on not being removed, and took multiple balls on the body, making 49 on a difficult pitch. Logan finally made a contribution in the wickets department, and was robbed of a hat-trick opportunity when they declared. Overall, we were lucky to make it out of this one with the lollies. The boys quickly grasped the rules, and then brought all of their back yard skills to the fore. Backing up and looking for the odd runouts increased as they got to know one another. Great effort by all! GAME REPORT: On a sultry spring evening, the Grey hawks won the toss and elected to field. And what a fielding effort it was! As the harvest moon was rising over the eastern horizon the boys fielded and bowled like professionals. The whole team grew in confidence which allowed us to take a few wickets, a few run outs and even a catch all on the first week. Don’t know how the coaches are going to improve upon that. The Blues managed to set a good total, so as the harvest moon lost its color the Grey hawks then took to the willow and before long the ball was streaking to the boundary whilst parents pondered the list of goods on sale at Keith Dudgeon’s! There were high levels of encouragement and comradery throughout the game. The Green Hawks had three debutants this week (Harry Cook, Matthew Gibson and Sean Lavery) who all played well and contributed with both bat and ball. Everyone contributed to a strong first innings batting performance with a focused effort on running between wickets resulting in only 2 runouts. Hayden Wiltshire top scored with 30 runs, closely followed by Danny Costello on 27, Jake Brind on 23 and Harry Cook on 15. Bowling was kept tight and supported by good fielding effecting 7 runouts. There were four wicket takers with Matthew Gibson the best at 2/9 in a man of the match performance, ably supported by Danny Costello with 1/1, Jake Brind and Harry Cook with 1/8 each. The White Hawks played well after the break with a stand out Man of Match performance by Nicholas Lawrence (35 runs n/o and 1/1 bowling). Great fielding as well by the team and a warm welcome to the two new boys to the White Hawks team. Can’t wait to see them grow this season. 06/10/2017 1st Inn Albany Creek Vs Albany Creek Green Hawks Batting: Charlie Ellison 26 Ansh Gidh 24 Bowling: Oliver Dahl 1/5 Hudson Morley 0/1 GAME REPORT: The Red Hawks made a magnificent start to the season, with four new young guns making their debut, and four seasoned veterans returning for their second. After captain Matteo Betts won the toss and sent the opposition in to bat, the Red Hawks put on a great bowling and fielding display, with Oliver Dahl throwing the stumps down from near the boundary for a great run out, and then shattering the stumps of the opposition batsman with a beautiful, fast, in-swinging Yorker to take our first two wickets of the season. Hudson Morley bowled a fiery spell of fast attacking deliveries, conceding just two scoring shots in his two overs, and debutants Max Douglas, and Matteo Betts both made a fantastic improvement in their line and length in their two overs each, showing they will be forces to be reckoned with during the rest of the season. Then with the bat in hand the mighty Red Hawks set about piling on the runs. Ethan Dahl ran brilliantly between the wickets early on to get us off to a great start, and then Charlie Ellison took advantage of some wayward bowling to smash 26 quick-fire runs, with Ansh Gidh then belting his last three deliveries miles out of the ground for three sixes in a row to race along to 24. The remaining batsmen all played extremely well, hitting the balls into gaps and running some very good quick singles. Sebastian Betts smashed a beautiful cut shot on his first , only to be thwarted by some brilliant fielding by the man at point, but then knocked the ball around and demonstrated some excellent backing up at the non-strikers end to help his team mates scoring as well. For a first game as a unit there were some very promising signs from this young outfit, and with some more enthusiasm in the field, remembering to back up and run really hard, and practicing our bowling and hitting off tees at home during the week, things are looking very good for season 2017-18. Well done Hawkies!! Coach / Manager: Mark Ellison / Belinda Morley Page 29 Hawk Talk: Summer 2017-18 - ISSUE 1

When it came Green Hawks time to field, they showed their true abilities with fielding and bowling. Even though plenty of Toombul players chimed in with fours and quick singles, plus some cracking sixes, the Green Hawks managed to get 19 outs. The Red’s score of 135 runs, was a great performance, however this was reduced by 57 to giving them a net score of 78. Coach / Manager: Jose Pais

This showed early when the boys decided to bowl first. Fionn, Charlie and Thomas DIxon bowled really well and were backed up by some excellent work in the field. Sam and Charlie each collecting 2 run outs were the highlights. Will Quigley played his first game and opened the battling superbly, hitting the team’s first boundary of the season. GAME REPORT: Friday night saw a well balanced team effort with each player contributing to the team’s efforts. The boys maintained their strong encouragement and support in the field, with a focus on throwing the ball when fielding, as opposed to running it back to the stumps. There were a number of good scores contributed with the bat, leading to an improved gross batting performance. 13/10/2017 1st Inn Albany Creek Vs Albany Creek Black Hawks Batting: Ansh Gidh 33 Matteo Betts 15 Hudson Morley 14 Bowling: Max Douglas 2/3 Oliver Dahl 1/3 Charlie Ellison 1/11 GAME REPORT: In game one the boys played very well, but the improvement into game two was excellent. Pretty much everyone improved in pretty much every area! After this week’s skipper Ethan Dahl again sent the opposition Black Hawks into bat, man-of-the-match Max Douglas put on a bowling and fielding display. After a nervous first over where he struggled to get his length right, Max came back in his second over with some aggression to rip through the Black Hawks batsmen, taking 2 for three. He then backed up in the fieild with a beautiful run out, with a perfect throw over the stumps to Oliver Dahl who whipped off the bails. Olly then chipped in with his second wicket of the season and then took a magnificent catch out on the boundary, and Charlie Ellison picked up his first on his last ball, after bowling a tidy maiden in his first over. Seb Betts also turned up the heat in his second over after a nervous start, and was desperately unlucky not to pick up a couple of wickets of his own, but kept the scoring to a minimum and put us in a good position for the upcoming run chase. With darkness falling the Red Hawks went out to chase the big Black Hawk total, and steadily set about racking up runs of their own. In a fantastic display, every batsman except Charlie improved their total from last week, to each rack up a new top score! Ansh Gidh again took advantage of some wayward bowling to plunder a quick-fire 33, Matteo Betts ran really well between the wickets and put away the loose balls for 15, and Charlie and Hudson Morley made a handy 14 each. Skipper Ethan had to wait until the final two overs to bat, and in difficult conditions did a great job in pushing the team total over the magical 100 run mark (before wickets subtracted), which is a fantastic early milestone the boys have achieved. So, two first wickets, a first catch, and first run out, a two first maidens, two first fours, a first team 100, and seven top scores! A great sign of things to come, and looking forward to game three! Well done boys. Coach / Manager: Mark Ellison / Belinda Morley Page 35 Hawk Talk: Summer 2017-18 - ISSUE 1

The Valleys lead pace bowler took a hat-trick which shook us but like a great team we are becoming, it also brought the best out of everyone. Several strong batting performances saw us post a competitive total. We then backed it up in the field. Outstanding from Jed and Luke saw the opposition batsmen always behind the required runrate. UNDER 15 EAGLE HAWKS 07 & 14/10/2017 1st Inn 2nd Inn Albany Creek Vs 105 Valley Green 7/93 Batting: Jackson Simpson 43* Blake Kennedy 23 Tim Newsome 9 Bowling: Tom Riley 1/4 Tim Newsome 1/9 Blake Kennedy 1/11 Fielding: Catches: Tim Cook, Tom Riley, Nick Graham, Brodie Crown GAME REPORT: The smell of linseed oil, red dye on creams, the sound of hopeful appeals…rain….cricket season is back! The Eagle Hawks ventured to the foothills of the Great Dividing Range to play Valleys at the picturesque Bowman Park, which unfortunately was washed out on Day 1. However on day 2 we were greeted with a well prepared wicket and great conditions for cricket. Having lost the toss and been asked to bat on a seamers paradise the Eagle Hawks battled away to a competitive score of 105. A great knock of 43no by Jackson set up the score. This was even more commendable as second ball Jackson received a blow from a rising delivery to the solar plexus that would have made Smokin’ Joe proud. Jackson was well supported by Blake and some lusty, but sensible lower order hitting by Tim N. There were a lot of good learnings for the future from batting on this wicket. The 105 was competitive but required some hard work with the ball to be done. Tim N opened the bowling from the walking path end and immediately put pressure on the batsmen, he was well supported by Yash who got an early breakthrough from the corner store end. This early pressure was well supported by a fiery spell from Blake who bowled with good pace and length. The two leg spinners Jackson and Brodie (not a phone to be seen) then dried up the runs and meant that the opposition needed to push it along after drinks. The other bowlers Tim C, Tristan, Lucas and Tom all made life difficult for the opposition. As with any good bowling performance it needed to be backed up by some sharp fielding, highlighted by Tom’s catch in close when it was really needed. The weight of runs in the final overs told on the opposition, who went down swinging, but in the end proved a bit much. So a good win by the boys in game 1, and a good contribution and effort by all, with plenty we can work on. Don’t put away the Arc’s just yet, but lets hope for good weather for the second game.
