Romaguera APPROVED: Dissertation Committee: Major Professor Valerie Karno Carolyn Betensky Ian Reyes Nasser H. Zawia DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 2017 Abstract This dissertation explores the author-text-reader relationship throughout the publication of works of serial fiction in different media. Following Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of authorial autonomy within the fields of cultural production, I trace the outside influence that nonauthorial agents infuse into the narrative production of the serialized. To further delve into the economic factors and media standards that encompass serial publishing, I incorporate David Hesmondhalgh’s study of market forces, originally used to supplement Bourdieu’s analysis of fields.

  • Committee on Evaluation of Comic Books Collection
Mss. 126 COMMITTEE ON EVALUATION OF COMIC BOOKS COLLECTION Scope and Content: The Committee on Evaluation of Comic Books donated the comic book collection in the Rare Books & Special Collections Department of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. It contains the founder, Reverend Jesse Murrell’s, correspondence, lists and articles regarding the Committee on Evaluation of Comic Books. This committee was founded in Cincinnati in 1948 shortly after Reverend Murrell preached a scathing sermon regarding comic books in May. Reverend Jesse Murrell of Covington, Kentucky organized the Committee. Another founding member was Ernest Miller, then the associate director, later becoming the director of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. The bulk of the collection consists of over 500 comic books from 1948 to 1966 that were evaluated by the committee. In 1950 the committee’s evaluation list was published in the February and October issues of Parents’ Magazine. It was published in this magazine every year from 1950 to 1959. From 1948 to 1960 the committee produced the evaluation list at least once a year, sometimes twice. On May 21, 1970, Mr. Miller was appointed the archivist of the Committee and all materials were housed at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Main Library. The Committee on the Evaluation of Comic Books continued to meet until 1979. “Our major purpose is to help the people formulate critical judgment as to the comics, then we try to help them buy and read selectively.” Reverend Murrell died in 1972; as did Mr. Miller. It was Mrs.

MBMBaM 485: Face 2 Face: Haunted Munch Squad Published on November 12th, 2019 Listen on TheMcElroy.family Intro (Bob Ball): The McElroy brothers are not experts, and their advice should never be followed. Travis insists he's a sexpert, but if there's a degree on his wall, I haven't seen it. Also, this show isn't for kids, which I mention only so the babies out there will know how cool they are for listening. What's up, you cool baby? [theme music plays] Justin: Welcome to the Walt Disney theater. Uh, it's such a pleasure to be here. I'm your oldest brother, Justin McElroy. [audience cheers] Travis: And I'm your middlest brother, Travis McElroy! [audience cheers] Griffin: And I'm your sweet baby brother and 30 under 30 media luminary Griffin McElroy. [audience cheers] Griffin: This one is gonna have… mad September 1st energy, though, so don't sweat that. Travis: Are you—are you guys excited to be back to school? Griffin: I'm excited— [scattered cheering] Griffin: Uh, I'm excited to see Angel Has Fallen, the top grossing movie this weekend. Travis: Here's the thing, though, Griffin. I can't go with you on this bit, 'cause I didn't see it then, and I still haven't seen it now. Griffin: I don't think I know anything about this picture. It's got Gerard Butler in it. Good for him! Travis: Well, people keep fallin'. Griffin: Yeah, I guess. Travis: The White House fell, and then… somebody else fell.
