In our office it is Fowler's custom to hold the weekly Board conference fifteen minutes before the regular opening of the business day. It keeps the clerks and stenos on their toes, and it's no hardship to Fowler. He spends every morning in the office anyway, and "morning" to him begins with the rising of the sun. Notes From The Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music. Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption. -

Rock music owed a lot to psychedelia. The search for a psychedelic sound had been the first and foremost motivation to cultivate progressive structures and creative arrangements. Without that motivation, rock music might have been stuck in Chuck Berry's riffs forever. Psychedelia was in a sense the "big bang" of rock music, from which the expansion began. However, after four decades it was difficult to see what that original impulse still had to offer that had not been heard already a thousand times. The sound of droning guitars was not particularly exciting anymore, shoegazing ecstasy was becoming the equivalent of the new-age music of the 1980s, and psychedelic folksingers were beginning to sound senile. Boston's Paradise Camp 23, the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Erik Amlee, indulged in the 47-minute shapeless space-noise jam that takes up most of Bar-BQ Dungeon (2001) and then unleashed the 46-minute drone-based jam of Solitaire (2002), bathed in cosmic electronic noise. Seattle's duo Growing turned psychedelic trance into an austere and pure science with its subliminal ambient dronescapes for guitars and electronics: Epochal Reminiscence, off The Soul Of The Rainbow And The Harmony Of Light (2004), that diluted a folkish melody into a cycle of ear-piercing tones; the pulsating galactic tsunami Wide Open, off His Return (2005); the dense hyper-dilated slowly-shifting Blue Angels, off Color Wheel (2006). -

The legacy of slo-core was still being felt at the end of the decade on countless recordings devoted to fragile, slow ballads. For example, Fuck in San Francisco, notably their second album Baby Loves A Funny Bunny (1996), and Kingsbury Manx in North Carolina, with the gentle, bucolic odes of Kingsbury Manx (1999). Texas' American Analog Set (1) advanced the oneiric sound pioneered by Galaxie 500, especially on their second album, From Our Living Room To Yours (1997). The extended single Late One Sunday (1997) wove together two hypnotic patterns, respectively a country guitar twang and a dub bass line, against a backdrop of intense drumming and floating voices. New York's trio Calla (1) sculpted shadowy melodies that slowly crept out of their fragile envelopes on the stark and stately Calla (1999), a softly- hallucinated music reminiscent of Ry Cooder's soundtracks and Calexico's desert ambience. Seattle's Red Stars Theory (2) turned Built To Spill's brainy trance upside down, emphasizing the trance, on their mostly-instrumental albums But Sleep Came Slowly (1997) and especially Life In A Bubble Can Be Beautiful (1999), which fused psychedelic, chamber and country music. -

Sound City: Reel to Real soundtrack - interesting mix of collaborations with Dave Grohl. Killswitch Engage Disarm the Descent - a marked improvement over 2009's self-titled record. Eugene Mirman An Evening of Comedy in a Fake, Underground Laboratory - best known as Gene from "Bob's Burgers," it's funny as all hell. Pearl Jam Lightning Bolt - a strange mix of ballads and rockers leads to an ok album. Mad Season Above (Deluxe Edition) - complete recordings and new material with Mark Lanegan on vocals. -

The group’s seventh (and first self-produced) album, it’s a thrilling spread that feels spontaneous and vigorous. Simone and Amedeo Pace offer a deep gravity in sprawling, warm guitars than pulse and blush, piano lines that puncture, and tinny hi-hat percussion that conveys only a mote of passing time. Singer Kazu Makino channels the glum wonderment of classic shoegaze in the title track, sighing with featherweight elegance, “23 seconds, all things we love will die/23 magic, if you can change your life,” while Amedeo Pace’s distorted vocals on “Publisher” edge ever-closer to bluesy yelps over draping, mathy guitars and subtle electronic fuzz. It’s artful in its lack of borders. –Stacey Anderson Listen: Blonde Redhead: “23” Creation Def American Medicine Shot Forth Self Living 1992 29 Medicine hail from sunny Los Angeles, not exactly a hub for shoegazers. But what makes this trio an indelible part of “the scene that celebrates itself,” across a pond and then a continent, is the roaring, fuzz-laden music of their debut, Shot Forth Self Living. The album’s resonant centerpiece, a chugging dirge cheekily named “A Short Happy Life,” features vocalist Beth Thompson crooning, “If you smile now, I just might melt” and evoking images of “honey sliding across the floor.” Beneath the tinnitus-inducing feedback, Medicine often fixate on love’s slow fade, that familiar theme of many shoegazing songs, balancing it with less likely doses of off-kilter instrumentation and effects (banjo, a ham radio, the hurdy-gurdy).
