  • February 24, 2017 President Donald J. Trump the White House United States of America
February 24, 2017 President Donald J. Trump The White House United States of America Dear President Trump, Since the founding of this country, science has been fundamental to the advancement of sound policy and economic prosperity and innovation. Science improves the lives of Americans, stimulates our economy, advances our understanding of our world, and protects us and our families from harm. As you select advisors that will help you to draft a blueprint for American policy, we urge you to make appointing a Science Advisor an immediate priority. Science is in the DNA of the United States. It plays an integral part in our nation's security, economic growth, public health, and infrastructure. Appointing a Science Advisor quickly will enable the Administration to maximize investments in science and develop a strategic plan that secures America’s leadership in science. The Science Advisor will assist your administration in driving innovation, and provide scientifically sound solutions to the pressing issues facing our nation today; including updating deteriorating infrastructure, combatting health epidemics, providing clean air and water, and securing valuable natural resources and minerals. Appointing a Science Advisor is a smart investment for our nation and for keeping our position as a scientific leader globally. Due to the integral role of the Science Advisor, we urge you to appoint an individual with a strong scientific background who understands the rigorous scientific method, the need for evidence-based science, and who can leverage the collaborative nature of the scientific community and the value of scientific research in shaping America’s future. As supporters of science, we urge you to work with our scientific organizations as you commence the selection process and the important task of advancing America’s scientific enterprise.

II. : THE deiterol STUD BOOK, CONTAINING PEDIGREES OF RACE HORSES, &C. &-C. From the earliest Accounts to the Year 1831. inclusice. ITS FOUR VOLUMES. VOL. II. Brussels PRINTED FOR MELINE, CANS A.ND C"., EOILEVARD DE WATERLOO, Zi. M DCCC XXXIX. MR V. un:ve PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION. To assist in the detection of spurious and the correction of inaccu- rate pedigrees, is one of the purposes of the present publication, in which respect the first Volume has been of acknowledged utility. The two together, it is hoped, will form a comprehensive and tole- rably correct Register of Pedigrees. It will be observed that some of the Mares which appeared in the last Supplement (whereof this is a republication and continua- tion) stand as they did there, i. e. without any additions to their produce since 1813 or 1814. — It has been ascertained that several of them were about that time sold by public auction, and as all attempts to trace them have failed, the probability is that they have either been converted to some other use, or been sent abroad. If any proof were wanting of the superiority of the English breed of horses over that of every other country, it might be found in the avidity with which they are sought by Foreigners. The exportation of them to Russia, France, Germany, etc. for the last five years has been so considerable, as to render it an object of some importance in a commercial point of view.

  • April 2012 Dear K&L Wine Club Members, It Has Finally Started Raining Here in Northern California; We Had Begun to Hear the Dreaded “Drought” Word
3005 El Camino, Redwood City, CA 94061 Phone, to place orders: (800) 247-5987 Wine Club extension: 2766 Fax (650) 364-4687 [email protected] April 2012 Dear K&L Wine Club Members, It has finally started raining here in Northern California; we had begun to hear the dreaded “drought” word. The weather always has a direct impact upon the current vintage. California has had some challenging weather conditions from 2008 to 2011, with effects on both wine quality (spotty) and quantity (smaller than normal crops). What this means for you the consumer and the wine club member is you’re likely to see more offerings from Europe, South America and Australia/New Zealand because their prices will stay down and their quality will be high. Luckily right now and for the next few months of wine clubs we have plenty of great California wines ready to go. Once again the Signature Red Club has two amazing red wines that offer you stunning value. First off is the 2006 Long Shadows Chester Kidder Red, a meritage blend out of Washington that is sure to knock your socks off. Next up is the 2007 York Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain, a brilliant wine from Fritz Maytag, the former owner of famed San Francisco brewery Anchor Steam. These wines each brilliantly showcase their unique terroir and the gorgeous fruit each appellation has to offer. Variety is part of what makes the Premium Club so special and this month we have wines from two of the world’s up-and-coming wine regions in Argentina and South Africa.

Understanding the Importance of Microbial Biogeography to Australian Winemaking Di Liu ORCID iD: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3241-1421 Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy – Agricultural Sciences Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences The University of Melbourne August 2020 ABSTRACT Microbes are a vital part of ecosystems and play key roles in the essential processes of the functioning. In agriculture, microbial ecology has wide reaching impacts on crop growth and quality commodity production. As a high value agricultural product, wine is a useful model for elucidating the effects of microbial ecology from the vineyard to the winery. Microbial growth and metabolism is an inherent component of wine production, influencing grapevine health and productivity, conversion of sugar to ethanol during fermentation, and the flavour, aroma and quality of finished wines. Recent advances in genetic sequencing and metagenomic approaches has extended our understanding of microbial distribution patterns and established the unique biogeography model in viticulture. While the contributions of microbial biogeography to wine metabolites and regional distinctiveness (known as terroir, a well-recognised and celebrated character in wine industry), and by which mechanisms, remain tenuous. This thesis focuses on the microbial biogeography of wine, the interplay between microbial patterns and affecting factors, and how these patterns drive wine quality and styles. I begin by investigating the distribution patterns of bacteria and fungi at large scale, and their roles in shaping wine characteristics. Samples were collected from vineyard soil, grape must, and wine ferments across six geographically separated wine-producing regions in southern Australia (~ 400 km).
