Requirement Details

1. Name and label 50 states with 80% accuracy. (Pages 6-10) • Must be completed in one sitting • May use any combination of spelling and postal codes • Test may be retaken as needed

2. Pictorial Representation of the Bill of Rights • Read the Bill of Rights. • Then create a legal size poster (8 ½ x 14), PowerPoint presentation (which is to be printed out), or booklet presenting the Bill of Rights in symbolic form. • Include an illustration as well as a brief summary of the each amendment artistically. • Use drawings, cut-out pictures, or photographs, and in your own words, explain what each amendment means to you.

6. Presidential report (evaluated by reading teacher) Research a U.S. President that you are not familiar with (George , Abraham Lincoln, Bill Clinton, George Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump are not appropriate choices) and report your findings. Your research should include:

• Brief description of his early life (date and place of birth, family, education). • Summarize his presidency (reason for running, length of term, important events/acts that occurred during his term). • Personal connection (reason for choosing this president, any cool facts that you learned about this president).

You can present this information in the form of a written report or PowerPoint Presentation (which is to be printed out). At the end of your report, please include a list of sources/websites used. Be sure to use your best writing practices.

B. Interview a Patriot (Pages 14 & 15)

D. State poster Make a small poster (8x10) about your favorite state, other than Maryland. Include the outline (shape) of the state, the state flag, state motto, and at least 3 of the state’s symbols.

Community Service Project • Choose and complete one suggested project from the list below. • Once your community service is finished, complete and return the community service form found in your Patriot Packet. • The signature should be that of the adult who saw, or supervised, the completion of the project. • Community Service must be completed outside of the school day during the 2019-2020 school year. • The form must include a picture of the student in action.

Choices: - plan and complete a beautification project (for example, plant/weed a garden, paint fences, clean graffiti, etc.) - organize and participate in a neighborhood litter clean-up - make greeting cards and deliver them to senior citizens, shut-ins, etc. - visit a nursing home, hospital, or shut in - donate old toys and/or books to Goodwill, homeless shelter, etc. - collect canned goods/clothing for the local food bank, homeless shelter, etc. - any community service activity that is parent/guardian approved

Flag Etiquette

1. Study the guidelines for flag etiquette. 2. You must score at least 70% to complete this requirement. If you did not score at least 70%, you may take the quiz again on another day.

When handling or displaying the U.S. flag, certain rules of etiquette should be followed. These rules are called the United States Flag Code.

• The flag should be flown from sunrise to sunset. If flown at night, the flag should be lighted. • The flag should be flown only in fair weather unless it is an all-weather flag. • The flag should be raised quickly and lowered slowly. • The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. • The flag should never be worn as a piece of clothing. • The flag may be displayed with another flag, but the U.S. flag should be flown at the top. • The flag should never be stepped on. • The flag should be cleaned and repaired when necessary.
