ACHIEVE INNOVATION IN LEARNING

1.1 Construction on the Information Technology Centre is almost complete. Six classrooms are currently in use and all rooms are being scheduled for classes in January 2004. What remains outstanding is a small amount of millwork, completion of landscaping and ventilation and balancing work is in progress. 1.2 Office furniture for the Co-op Office space and the Innovation and Applied Research Centre in the Information Technology Centre is scheduled to arrive during first week of December. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration]

1.3 The Mohawk College Student Laptop Initiative (MCSLI) was approved and is being planned for production in January 2004. The MCSLI is a one-year pilot project in student mobile computing, in which students in various programs will be issued laptop computers for their dedicated use during term. The purpose of the MCSLI pilot is to gain experience with this method of delivery and to evaluate how well the mobile computing model fits at Mohawk. 1.4 Network hardware was installed for all computer labs, classroom and offices in the new IT Centre. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration]

1.5 Jackie Donnelly (IAHS counsellor) and Karen Martin (Nursing faculty), are conducting an “ESL/Tutoring” pilot project funded by Student Success to discover ways to assist ESL health science students improve their oral communication skills for the clinical area. Anna Gris from the ESL department has been hired to train two student tutors so they can assist the students by using curriculum content from the students’ programs (Nursing and Occupational Therapy/Physio Therapy Assistant) as their focus to help students improve oral communication skills. The tutors also use exercises, case examples and simulation experiences provided by several nursing teachers so that they can provide practical assistance relevant to their clinical setting. 1.6 Dispute Resolution and Human Rights Services presented human rights workshops to a variety of groups this month including cooperative education classes, Continuing Education staff, Media faculty, Occupational and Physiotherapy faculty

1.7 Jim Vanderveken, Director of Community Economic Development and Access Programs, was a presenter at the Conference Board of Canada’s Workplace Education and Learning Symposium, held on November 17 in Toronto. The presentation focused on innovative community partnerships with specific attention on the Hamilton Training Network, a new community-based Internet training venture. HTN is a collaborative effort by the Hamilton Training Advisory Board, Inc., Mohawk College, and Lake Erie, to develop a business to business training co-operative. 1.8 Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services and Jim Vanderveken, Director of Community Economic Development and Access Programs, participated, along with several other Mohawk staff, in the opening launch event of the 2003 Opportunities Conference, which held on Monday November 24 at the Hamilton Convention Centre. The Opportunities Conference hosted 800 registrants from every region of over three days and is held on an annual basis in Hamilton. The conference brings together individuals who work in employment, job preparation and other community-based front line assistive roles. 1.9 Jim Vanderveken, Director of Community Economic Development and Access Programs, attended the Canadian Urban Institute's Investing in Learning Communities: Collaborating to Compete in the Knowledge Economy conference, which was held on November 25 in Toronto. Among a number of speakers, Roger Martin, Chair of the Ontario Task Force on Competitiveness, Productivity and Economic Progress, presented the results of the 2003 annual report of the Task Force. 1.10 On November 21, 2003, sixteen women from the Women In Skilled Trades Construction Trades program received their Certificates of Completion at a graduation ceremony at the Stoney Creek Campus. This is a thirty-three wee full- time program in partnership with the Ontario Women’s Directorate. Students are offered eight weeks of trades-specific training in electrical, carpentry and plumbing occupations. Sandra Smith and Barb McIntosh represented the Ontario Women’s Directorate at the graduation and they brought greetings and congratulations from the Minister responsible for women’s issues. 1.11 Mohawk College was recently profiled as part of the agenda highlighting the successes of the past three Women in Skilled Trades (WIST) programs. On Tuesday, November 25, 2003, Debbie DeDauw, Training Consultant with the Community Economic Development and Access Programs department attended a Women in Skilled Trades Best Practices/Program Evaluation meeting at the Ontario Women’s Directorate office located at the Ministry offices in Toronto. 1.12 In undertaking the training needs analysis study commissioned by the Ontario Human Resources Chemical Sector Committee, Mohawk College hosted a meeting of the committee on November 7. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

1.13 On October 21, 2003, the Tourism and Travel 1st year students visited John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. The future travel industry personnel spent an hour touring the airport. Students were allowed behind the check-in counters at Westjet and were briefed by customs and security as to their procedures. They were even personally escorted by airport security onto the runways. 1.14 Business Management’s Marketing faculty and students recently participated in the Ontario Colleges Marketing Competition (OCMC) held at Sir Sanford Flemming College in Peterborough. Stephen Kosh won first place in the Job Interview event and Stephen Kosh and Robert Wigood won Gold in the Sales Management event. Garret Kowalyshyn was part of the 3rd placed team winning Bronze in the quiz bowl. Congratulations to both the students and faculty who contributed to this success! 1.15 Enterprise Business students were volunteers and participants in the 2nd Annual Project Management Institute Symposium held in Kitchener, on October 23, 2003. There were over 157 participants from a wide spectrum of industry in what has become known as “Canada’s Technology Triangle”. Keynote speakers for the day were Mr. Jim Clemmer, international, renowned speaker and author of “The Leader’s Digest” and Mr. Don Morrison, COO of Research in Motion of Kitchener. The Kitchener Chapter currently has 353 members of which 137 hold the designation of “Project Management Professional”. Mohawk College and the students of the Enterprise Business Program were recognized for their contribution to the success of the day. Compliments from members and

1.16 John Kezys, Professor, Department of Mathematics attended the reunion of Viewpoints 2003 Art and Mathematics Workshop at Indiana University, Bloomington Indiana, November 14 to 16. During the Seminar sessions John presented "Application of Projective Geometry for Perspective Drawing". View workshop activities at - http://mypage.iu.edu/~mathart/viewpoints/vp2003prime/. 1.17 Gary Hagan has taken on a new position as Director of Innovation and Applied Research. Gary has been with Computer Science and Information Technology Department since 1986 where he was professor, co-ordinator and mentor to all. Gary will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues and we wish him the best in this new position. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.18 The Computer Science and Information Technology Department ran their second contest “Amazebots” on Wed. Nov. 12th. Students submitted their programming solutions to a virtual maze and to the cheers of their peers they ran the virtual race. The winner was a first semester CSAIT student, Aravin Duraikannan. Many thanks to Mark Yendt, Professor, Computer Science and Information Technology Department, for all his work in organizing this exciting event. 1.19 Grace Siu was not only the dominant Ontario College Women’s Badminton Singles player during her career; she was easily the most popular and recognizable varsity athlete of her time at Mohawk College. “Amazing” Grace, as she was known has now been given the additional honour of being inducted into the Mohawk College Athletics Department Hall of Fame. The Computer Science and Information Technology department is very proud of Grace, a graduate of Information Systems Technician. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.20 The American Production Inventory Control Society have changed the curriculum for the designation CPIM. Eric Flegg, Professor, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department will be incorporating these changes into Materials Management 1 and 2 and also Production Control. 1.21 Brad Bowman, Professor, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department has launched the second of Metalcasting Courses in a Distance Learning Format. The first course MTB-70 entitled “Introduction to Metalcasting” was launched last year and a total of approximately 50 students enrolled in the program in 2002. Students from as far away as China have enrolled in the program. The second course MTB-72 “Sand and Molding Technology” was launched in October of 2003 with an enrolment of 15 students. This is our first attempt to try laboratories in an on-line format. MTB-70 is also running with an enrolment of 17 students. We are seeing increasing interest in these courses from the United States. 1.22 Our metalcasting laboratory was recognized by the Cast Metals Institute as one of the premier metalcasting laboratory facilities in North America. In light of this, we will start hosting courses sponsored by the American Foundry Society and the Cast Metals Institute in 2004. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.23 The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department has increased the number of available seats of Mastercam software. This licensing agreement was a cooperative initiative between Dave Hoffman, Co-ordinator, Skills Development, , Ken Mercer, Professor, Building & Construction Sciences Department and the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department. 1.24 Bob Gillan, Professor, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department attended a three-day session to create the new exams for the Tool & Die trade. Bob's presence is always welcomed at such sessions with his well-earned reputation with the Ministry regarding the trade. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.25 Rick Dupp, Professor, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department, attended his first CAC meeting involving the IMM trade and will be contributing questions for new exemption and C of Q exams. Rick also has been delivering a review class for the post secondary students who are writing the IMM basic exemption exam. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.28 The Advertising Department was pleased and proud to announce the names of students who submitted winning entries in the Hammies Show 2003. The Hammies (Hamilton Area Marketing Media Internet Excellence) is a new event that replaces the ACE Awards. For the Magazine Campaign category, Ian Martin won Gold, Angela Gina Pirrera, Lisa Kudrenski, Mike Harte, Mike Santilli and Monica Conway achieved Silver, and Ian Martin and Mike Harte were awarded Bronze. In the Magazine Single category, Jessica Zwarts won Gold, Telly Kontogiannis took home Silver and Angela Pirrera finished with a Bronze. In the Newspaper Single category, Peter Kalogiros won Gold. 1.29 On Friday, November 14th, three Mohawk 3rd Year Advertising students were awarded a Gold RSVP Award for their submission to the Canadian Marketing Awards Student Creative Competition. Eight other 3rd Year Advertising students received Awards of Merit for their work in the National Competition. The Gold RSVP and Awards of Merits will be added to the 3 golds, 3 silver, and 2 Award of Merits that Mohawk has won in past competitions. The Best of the Best Award went to "Relax, it's just a game" campaign for the Canadian Hockey Association (along with 3 other Gold RSVP's for the campaign) and the two Gold RSVPs for Vancouver's Bait Car Program - all campaigns spearheaded by Mohawk Advertising graduate, Scot Keith (Account Director at Palmer Jarvis DDB) There were 550 entries this year. 1.30 At the fall meeting of the Teachers of English as a Second Language Hamilton Affiliate meeting Professor Elizabeth Sadler was awarded the Award for Excellence for 2003 in recognition of outstanding service to the TESL community. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

EXPAND PARTNERSHIPS AND LINKAGES

2.1 The Mohawk College Neighbourhood Committee is a collaborative effort between Mohawk College, the Neighbours, , the Mohawk Students' Association and the City of Hamilton. Both the City of Hamilton and the neighbouring community around the Fennell Campus identified a need to build a better communication mechanism, and understanding between students and the neighbours and to build a positive environment in the neighbourhood where non- student residents and students live in close proximity. In February of 2003, the inaugural meeting of the Mohawk College Neighbourhood Committee was held. This Committee continues to meet regularly on a quarterly basis to discuss issues of importance that impact on the neighbouring community. The following are some of the actions and strategies accomplished by the Mohawk College Neighbourhood Committee during 2003: Neighbourhood membership on the Mohawk College Neighbourhood Committee represents the neighbourhood areas experiencing concern; the Off Campus Housing Sub-Committee of the Mohawk College Neighbourhood Committee was struck and the inaugural meeting was held May 13, 2003 which was followed by another meeting on November 18, 2003; the first edition of the Neighbour Report was distributed in September 2003 with the second issue to be distributed by the end of December 2003; an email address was established to facilitate neighbour concerns: [email protected]; an email distribution list was established for the Mohawk College Neighbourhood Committee in order for them to receive Mohawk updates and participate in Mohawk activities; Neighbourhood Open Forums were held on June 18 and September 25, 2003 and were hosted by either the Ward 8 Councillor for the City of Hamilton or Mohawk College; a Neighbourhood Open Forum is scheduled for 2004; Neighbours were provided with Mohawk College contact telephone numbers along with other appropriate contact telephone numbers for police and City of Hamilton Standards and Licensing; ongoing communication was established between Mohawk College and the Hamilton Police Service during "high activity" e.g. semester startup, end of semester; a schedule of Events was provided by the Mohawk Students' Association; Neighbours and Neighbourhood Representatives are encouraged to keep in contact with Mohawk College and other agencies; the Hamilton Police Service re-affirmed the assignment of a Sgt. and "beat officer" to Fennell Campus area; "Mohawk Proactive"--a special initiative was implemented by the City of Hamilton Standards and Licensing; the City of Hamilton Standards and Licensing has sanctioned landlords when/where appropriate under the appropriate by-law/s; Mohawk College,

Hamilton Police Service or City of Hamilton Standards & Licensing addressed concerns with either landlords or students when appropriate; distribution of "Blue Boxes" were included in the "Move-In Packages" during September 2003; the Off Campus Housing data base was established and will be enhanced in 2004; development of handouts for students, neighbours, landlords and parents regarding off-campus housing; improved communication between Mohawk College and absentee landlords; "chronic" houses are monitored; Mohawk College Mobile Units monitor neighbourhoods; Hamilton Police Service continued to assign paid duty officers to the Mohawk College Wednesday Night Pub at the "Arnie"; the Hamilton Police Service continued to implement R.I.D.E. Lanes when/where appropriate; Mohawk College attempted to keep events away from neighbourhood fence line when/where possible; Mohawk College became a member of the Student Life Education Company that is a registered charity and not-for-profit organization focusing on the quality of student life. The mission of The Student Life Education Company is to be a leader in the promotion of healthy decisions on the use or non- use of alcohol and other health issues; the Mohawk Students' Association implemented a "one student to two guest ratio" for the Mohawk College Wednesday Night Pub at the "Arnie"; a commitment was made by the Hamilton Police Service, Mohawk College, and the City of Hamilton to keep lines of communication open and to support neighbours. The President of Mohawk College is a member of the Mohawk College Neighbourhood Committee and the Committee is chaired by the Vice President, Student and Community Services, Carolyn Gray. The members of the Committee are encouraged to work through the office of the Vice President, Student and Community Services with regard to any issues or concerns. arrange for a plaque to be presented by Marilyn Micucci, Manager of International Education to Mr. Harufumi Noro, Director of International Center, Nihon Fukushi University. This plaque recognizes Mohawk College's participation in the Japan Exposure Program for Overseas Partner Institutions. The following three Social Service Worker students are representing Mohawk College along with Marilyn Micucci: Krista Kyle, Dina Paparo and Ryan Campbell. They are currently in Japan and upon return to the College, the students will share their experiences with their classmates. Nihon Fukushi University extended an invitation to Mohawk College students to participate in their “Japan Exposure Program” in November 2003. The theme of the program for 2003 is “A First Hand Look Into Japanese Welfare Today”. In addition to inviting Mohawk College students to participate, Nihon Fukushi University extended an invitation to students at the Victoria University of Technology, Australia; the University of the Philippines, Philippines; and, the University Sains Malaysia, Malaysia. The program’s purpose is to give students from overseas institutions the opportunity to gain basic exposure to Japan, Japanese society and the education system at Nihon Fukushi University. The program is a one-week program centered on student interactions involving lectures, field visits and a homestay experience with a Japanese family. 2.3 The third "Take Our Kids to Work Day" was a success. On November 5, thirty-five "kids" throughout Mohawk College campuses. This group is the largest to date. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

2.4 Mohawk College has signed an agreement with Boreal College to offer French courses for Francophones through the Faculty of Continuing Education. The first course will be offered in January 2004. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

2.5 On behalf of Mohawk College, Dispute Resolution and Human Rights Co-ordinator, Martha Fox attended the formal launch of the Student Leadership in Anti Racism Report at on November 25, 2003. This report will serve as an impetus for enhanced opportunities to address concerns regarding racism in our communities and in our educational institutions. This forum was planned and carried out in response to the Strengthening Hamilton’s Community Initiative. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

2.6 On November 7, 2003, forty staff members participated in the Faculty of Continuing Education Professional Development workshop. The workshop topics were designed to build staff awareness and sensitivity to Human Rights issues through

2.7 A total of $1092 was raised in support of the United Way and the Student Food Share through the United Way Spaghetti Lunch. The lunch is held annually at the Fennell, Brantford, and Stoney Creek campuses; and is sponsored by Chartwells and the Student Life and Ancillary Services Department. 2.8 The Brantford Campus hosted the Brant County High School Boys’ finals from November 3 - 5. The Regional finals were held on November 13, and featured teams from the Brantford, Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Oxford areas. The Brant County High School Girls’ finals were also held at Brantford from November 10 - 12. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

2.9 Brantford hosted the Brantford Elementary School Volleyball City Semi-Finals from November 24 – 28. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

2.10 The Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA) and the Students’ Athletics Committee (SAC) participated in the 2003 Hamilton Santa Claus parade on November 15. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

2.11 The Mohawk College Senior Boys’ Invitational Basketball Tournament was held on November 21 and 22 in the Fennell Campus Gymnasium. The tournament featured seven high school basketball teams from the Hamilton-Burlington area and one team from Timmins. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

2.12 Mohawk College hosted the National Steel Car Children’s Christmas Party on November 29 in the Fennell Campus Gym and The McIntyre Theatre. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

2.13 Mohawk College will host the 2004 Bay Area Science & Engineering Fair (BASEF) from March 31 - April 3, 2004. BASEF is one of the largest and longest-running science fairs in Canada. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

2.14 Mohawk College will host the Dofasco Festival of Christmas Carols on Saturday, December 13 in The McIntyre Theatre. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

2.15 During the month of November, Leo Barsony, Coordinator, International

Education visited a number of private international high schools in London and Toronto resulting in new application requests from their international students. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

2.16 Students from India are experiencing difficulty in obtaining student visas from the United States. This has resulted in a large number of student representatives requesting information from Canadian schools. In November more than 30 representatives wishing to send students from India have contacted Mohawk College’s International Education Department. 2.17 The top 5 countries sending students to Canada, to date this year, are South Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan and India. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

2.18 There are ongoing negotiations between Mr. Dave Buryta, Professor, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department to partner with Rixen Engineering, sole North American supplier of Mitsubishi robotics and CIM software simulation for use in department. 2.19 Mohawk College and Dofasco are exploring a training agreement in which Mohawk faculty members deliver Maintenance Skills Training and Basic Hydraulics training at the Dofasco training site in Burlington. 2.21 A delegation from the faculty of Brantford & Applied Arts travelled to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia from November 19th to 21st. This visit was to tour the facilities, meet with Administrators and to learn best practices from a highly regarded art school. This visit provided information and insight that will be incorporated into future planning for Brantford & Applied Arts, and especially the Brantford Centre for Community,

Communications and Design. Savannah credits SCAD with much of the urban renewal that has taken place in that city since the late 1970’s, which mirrors the plans for the BCCCD’s outcomes in Brantford’s downtown revitalization plan. Dean Douglas Baker, Chair of Communications Media Greg Unrau, Chair of Creative & Applied Arts (Continuing Education) Kim Walker and Project & Administrative Support Officer Paula Crow made the trip to Savannah. As well as a successful tour and meeting, SCAD representatives are reviewing course descriptions which may provide links for Mohawk College graduates to further their studies in Savannah. 2.22 The Steeltown Friends of Mohawk Jazz recently sponsored a master class for all the Applied Music students one afternoon in the theatre. Bill May is a famous jazz performer, composer and arranger who has had a full career based in Los Angeles and New York and he discussed and demonstrated his work for over 80 students. He was accompanied by Terry Clark and Neil Swainson, highly respected Canadian jazz professionals. 2.23 Derek Whitney, Professor, Packaging Management and Technology Program, and John Schaeffer, made presentations to the annual Canadian Corrugated Case Association’s Conference held at the Toronto Conference Centre on November 3, and to the Ontario Chapter of the Association of Independent Corrugated Converters on September 11, at the Mississauga Convention Centre. The presentations included an overview of Mohawk College’s Packaging Program and the plans for the Brantford Centre for Community, Communications and Design. Both presentations were received very favourably with good dialogue from the over 200 participating companies and representatives. The partnerships expected will help to raise awareness and increase the commitment from companies in the donation of monies or equipment to the new proposed Centre. 2.24 Mohawk College in Partnership with Parks and Recreation Ontario and Leisurability hosted a workshop on Inclusion. Students in the Recreation and Leisure Services program at Mohawk College, and Waterloo University; as well as practitioners in the field came together on November 25 to learn the latest on the Ontario Disability Act and the successes and challenges of incorporating the Act in the community. Jeff Adams, Paralympic Champion, Chair Accessibility Directorate Ontario will kick off the day with a motivational

2.25 Pat Duxbury, Professor, Nursing organized an Information Day for Secondary School Counsellors on Health Sciences Programs at the IAHS on November 7. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic]

2.26 Rosemary Knechtel, Dean, Health Sciences and Human Services brought greetings at the Practical Nursing Clinical Partnerships Day on November 14 held at the Mohawk-McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences (IAHS). The College of Nurses of Ontario provided an overview of the practice expectations for RPN’s and RN’s. Practical Nursing Coordinators, Andrea Deakin, Cathy Smith and Dannie Angevine presented a gap analysis and overview of the new diploma Practical Nursing program as well as lead discussions regarding relevant clinical placements. The Master of Ceremonies was Marilyn Bieksa, Chair, Health Sciences & Human Services, and over 85 participants from the health care community attended. 2.28 On Wednesday, November 19, 2003, OTA/PTA Program presented a Program Information Session for Fieldwork/Clinical Affiliates. 24 clinical fieldwork preceptors attended. There was much interest in gathering specific information regarding the new OTA/PTA Diploma (start Fall 2004) especially with respect to upgrading opportunities for those who currently have the certificate credential. 2.29 An Internship student from the OTA/PTA program is currently completing his final 7-week placement in PTA at the Cairns Base Hospital in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. This is the second time a PTA student has had the opportunity to complete the Internship requirements in Australia. In 2002, a student was placed at the Prince Charles Rehabilitation Hospital in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia where she was very successful in meeting her Internship requirements. 2.30 Students in the Recreation and Leisure Services program, Therapeutic Recreation stream attended a one-day symposium hosted by the Hamilton Therapeutic Recreation Association and St. Peter’s Hospital on Tuesday,

November 18. Students participated in a number of unique sessions including: Community Drumming Circles, Adapted Boccia and Active Living. The afternoon was highlighted by a presentation entitled “A Walk in My Shoes”—presented by St. Joseph’s Centre for Mountain Health Care. The session demonstrated the physical, cognitive, social and emotional challenges faced by an aging population. 2.31 Philips Medical Systems Canada was the recipient of the 2003 Council for Resource Development Benefactor Award for Canada at a gala banquet at the Hyatt Regency, Capital Hill in Washington DC on November 21, 2003. Mohawk College nominated Philips for the extraordinary support that has been provided to the Ultrasound programs offered at the Mohawk-McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences. The evening included a video tribute to Philips and Mohawk to celebrate their partnership. President Cal Haddad attended the ceremony on behalf of Mohawk College. 2.32 The Graduate and Student Employment service was the recipient of the Vector Marketing Canada College Cup $1000 donation in recognition of 14 Mohawk College students who worked for Vector Marketing in the summer of 2003 and sold $43,518 in Cutco Cutlery Products, more than any other College group in Canada. 2.33 Margaret Thomson, Co-op Consultant, Centre for Co-operative Education, Graduate and Student Employment, gave a co-operative education presentation to high school science teachers attending an information day on Thursday, November 13th with the Chemical & Environmental Technology department. 2.34 Linda Basso, Student Employment Co-ordinator, Centre for Co-operative Education, Graduate and Student Employment was a member of the Opportunities Advisory Group for Opportunities 2003, the 5th annual province wide conference for career practitioners and employment preparation professionals. The advisory group was comprised of representatives from public, private and non-profit career development organizations. The 3-day conference was held in Hamilton for the second consecutive year and this year's theme was

3.1 The following financial reports were submitted in November: Summer Jobs Service estimate report SSI Medical Imaging progress report

3.2 In November, BDO Dunwoody LLP, the College’s external auditors, performed interim audit tests on purchases, payables, cash receipts, receivables and payroll activities. There were no significant weaknesses cited by the external auditors.

3.3 Several Banner related activities occurred this month including: a) web demo on Evisions for accounts receivable invoices & statements and accounts payable cheques; b) mock registration for the student module including receivables; c) assessing payment processing with IVR and the web; d) programming the “due date” requirement for accounts receivable transactions; e) preparation of training materials; f) meetings with different groups to address process changes in receivables, purchasing and payables. 3.4 Mohawk College was selected to participate in the new Canada Savings Bonds (CSB) internet campaign whereby employees were able to purchase or adjust their current regular and RSP bonds. 3.9 The Campus Store full-time staff participated in a forward planning and professional development day on November 7, 2003. Prior to the session, all staff completed the Meyers-Briggs questionnaires and Cate Walker-Hammond, Staff Development Services, started off the day by sharing the results and how to interpret them with the team. The exercise highlighted the value of having different personality types on the team and to appreciate and utilize everyone's different strengths. The remainder of the day was spent in an interactive goal setting session, resulting in priorities and goals for the Campus Store and individuals for the coming year. 3.10 The Facility Management and Construction Division welcomed Tony Scime as Manager, Mechanical and Electrical on November 24. Tony recently held the position of Manager of Facilities Management Services at Niagara College. Tony, a Mohawk graduate, will be located in Room B101H and can be reached at extension 2269 for any mechanical or electrical concerns. 3.11 MoCoMotion training modules have been completed and we have begun presenting these to staff. Once they have received training, users are live on the system. Content on the portal continues to grow, and Channel, Targeted Announcements and Group Policies are being developed to govern the distribution of information on MoCoMotion. 3.12 I.T. Technical Support specialists Ken Staruck and Eric Buttrum attended a 5 day course at the Hewlett Packard training centre in Mississauga. The course covered the basics of HP/US Administration and Operation, required for the administration and operation of the Banner/Oracle database server. 3.16 Renovation work is currently in process in Rooms J105, J107 and J111 to create consolidated office space for the Dean, Business and International Education and the International Education Department. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration]

3.17 Cameron Houston was temporarily assigned to the Banner Project on a full-time basis from November 10 to December 5, 2003. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration]

3.18 On November 21, 2003, Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services hosted a professional development session for all staff in the division. The focus of the session was on diversity issues. This was the first in a series of professional development opportunities being planned for staff in this division. The next session is tentatively scheduled for late Spring and the topic will be "customer service". Staff within the Student and Community Services Division had an opportunity to meet each other--some for the first time--since the transition occurred when various departments were amalgamated. 3.19 Students have been taking advantage of learning strategies and assistive technology services offered through the Enhanced Services Funding pilot project to Disability Services. In the first two months of the semester, 438 appointments were seen by two learning strategists, and 111 appointments were seen by the Assistive Technologist which represents a positive response to these two services. In addition, one of the learning strategists has had 34 appointments at the Stoney Creek campus. Learning strategies support has also been made available to students at the IAHS on Wednesday mornings to respond to the increasing need at that campus for services. 3.20 Two disability awareness sessions were offered to Admissions and Financial Aid staff during November. The 1 1/2 hour sessions resulted in actions which will lead to better collaboration between departments. Disability Services will provide information about the availability of services that can be included in the acknowledgement letter sent by Admissions. In addition, Disability Services will send a "confirmation of disability form" to Admissions so that they are aware that of a student's disability in order to assist the student with such issues as reducing their course load and adjusting their fees. Admissions and Financial Aid agreed that they

3.21 Approximately 650 staff and students were immunized at four flu clinics held at the Fennell Campus during October and November. A flu clinic was held at the Brantford Campus, and 100 staff and students received their vaccine. The Stoney Creek Campus flu clinic had a total of 137 in attendance and the IAHS Campus held four clinics for a total of 422 flu vaccines administered. 3.22 The Aboriginal Student Counsellor, Kim Hill, has increased activities, access and availability to Aboriginal students by being available at the Brantford, Fennell and IAHS campuses. Kim Hill facilitated a moccasin making session for 12 interested students. At the Fennell campus, a corn soup lunch and a visit from Norma General was also scheduled. Norma General shared information about Iroquois women’s roles and their significance in relationships and family. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

3.23 The Aboriginal Student Counsellor, Kim Hill, was invited to three second year B.Sc.N. classes to offer a cultural perspective in relation to a current case study. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

3.24 Jaynn Miller, Coordinator of Student Success participated in a teleconference with student success related representatives from eighteen of the Ontario colleges and members of the Community Leadership program at the University of Texas at Austin. The focus was to discuss the interest among Ontario Colleges for establishing an Ontario college cohort to participate in ‘The Community College Survey of Student Engagement’. 3.25 The Peer Tutor Program has experienced an increase in activity this month due to final exams. There has also been an increase in the number of students accessing this service. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

3.26 The Counselling Department at Fennell experienced an increase in students requiring service, with all counselling appointment times booked one to two weeks in advance, and the demand for drop-in counselling exceeding availability. The Continuing Education counselling drop-in time on Thursday evenings has seen an even greater increase. Part of the increase was due to students who had hoped for daytime services being redirected to the evening hours. The majority of students

accessing Counselling continue to be full-time, although Continuing Education students, alumni, Employee Assistance clients and community clients (the latter for career/educational and pre-application planning) also use the services. 3.27 In November, students accessed Counselling to discuss the following issues: career path uncertainty, academic program suitability, academic difficulties, and personal issues such as depression and anxiety, bereavement, eating disorders and attempted suicide. Counsellors observed an increase in stress related issues as the term progressed, e.g. financial, academic problems, program changes, withdrawals. Counsellors responded with a range of effective interventions, depending on the nature of the problems. These included supporting students in finding personally viable options and resources to resolve or to cope with the situations. Modifying and adjusting educational plans may assist (e.g. applying to another program or to repeat the first semester of the program in the Winter semester, dropping courses where possible). When appropriate, counsellors teach learning and stress/anxiety management strategies, and make referrals to other departments and services in the College and also to resources in the community. 3.28 Counsellors support student success by working collaboratively with Program Chairs and faculty. For example, a counsellor is continuing to assist in the successful implementation of a “Learning Agreement”. The agreement was co-designed by the Counselling Department and the program area to assist in the resolution of a placement-related issue in such a way that supports the student’s learning, personal growth and continuation in the program. 3.29 The Counselling Department at the Fennell campus presented a "Strategies for Academic Success Common Hour Seminar" on November 19 entitled: “Preparing for Tests and Exams”. 3.30 Many students also came to Counselling to discuss post-graduate plans, degree completion opportunities, and for help with the university application process. In addition to responding to individual queries, the Department also offered an information session regarding degree completion and post-graduate opportunities at the Fennell Campus, on November 26 which was well-attended by 57 students. Counsellors are working with Betty Chou, Manager of the Recognition of Learning Centre, on a “Counsellors’ Tips for Researching and Applying to Universities"

3.31 Brantford counsellor, Jack Leon and the Recognition of Learning Manager, Betty Chou, provided campus-wide information sessions during Common Hour for potential Mohawk graduates on November 12, 2003 at the Brantford Campus and November 26, 2003 at the Fennell Campus. Both sessions were well attended and provided information on post-diploma graduate certificate programs at Mohawk College as well as degree completion opportunities within and outside of Canada. 3.32 Brantford counsellor, Jack Leon, offered four “Returning to School” group information sessions (including one evening session) at Brantford Campus in November. The goal of these sessions is to provide information to potential college applicants. Jack Leon also offered an evening Career Planning Services information session in Brantford in November for individuals interested in making effective choices for future educational training. 3.33 On November 7, IAHS counsellors Jackie Donnelly and Don Jamieson and four Health Sciences students conducted a presentation and panel discussion for area high school counsellors. Titled “Career Decision Making”, this related career theory to the work high school counsellors do in assisting their students with their academic planning, especially relating to co-op and volunteer work. The session successfully improved high school counsellors awareness of our health science programs, program content and the reasons which led students to select these programs. 3.34 On November 24, IAHS counsellor Jackie Donnelly attended a Professional Development Seminar at McMaster entitled “Inclusive Teaching Strategies” [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

3.35 On November 24-26, IAHS counsellor Don Jamieson attended the Opportunities 2003 Conference at the Hamilton Convention Centre. 3.36 Lecture theatre C114 at Fennell Campus was filled with Mohawk students and faculty interested in the presentation on Opportunities for Mohawk Graduates organized by Recognition of Learning Manager, Betty Chou, and the senior level Advertising students of MCA Advertising and Communications on November 19,

Approximately 100 people listened to Brock’s Assistant Director of Recruitment and Liaison, Beth Natale and Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions, Mika Vervoort during the Common Hour session. Ms. Natale and Ms. Vervoort also participated in an informal question-and-answer period held later that afternoon for counsellors, program co-ordinators and class advisors. There are currently 50 students studying on a full-time basis at Brock University this fall who have previously attended Mohawk College programs. 3.37 The Mohawk College Children’s Christmas Party was held on Sunday, November 30, 2003. The event featured crafts, games, and a visit from Santa Claus for children of Mohawk College employees. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services].

3.38 The Student Life and Ancillary Services Department is hosting a Holiday Food Drive from November 24 – December 19 in support of the Mohawk College Student Food Share. The Student Food Share is run by the MSA, and is open to all full-time students. Approximately 500 students use the food share each month. 3.39 Karen Lavell, Manager of Student Life, attended the National Orientation Directors Association (NODA) Conference in October. NODA provides education, leadership, and professional development to colleges in the fields of student orientation, transition, and retention. 3.40 Michelle Harkness, Director of Student Life & Ancillary Services, attended the National Association of College Auxiliary Services’ (NACAS) 35th Annual Conference in November. NACAS is the largest auxiliary services support organization serving post-secondary education. Their membership includes colleges and universities throughout Canada and the USA. 3.41 The Humanities and Social Sciences Department recently hired a graduate of the General Arts and Science Program as a full-time faculty member in the department. Dan Popowich was in Mohawk’s GAS Program from 1990-1992 and made a decision to pursue higher learning. Since then he has achieved a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Sociology and many of the courses he will be teaching are in the GAS Program. 3.42 Jim Jones, Chair of Language Studies, attended a TESL conference in Vancouver this month. His time at the conference was focused specifically on access and transition of ESL students into post-secondary programs. He was able to gather a number of resources that will be valuable for building on the College’s ESL strategy. Two specific recommendations include additional course supports for ESL students and a ‘Cultural Competence’ training session for faculty and staff, to be presented in partnership with Cate Walker-Hammond. 3.44 A successful Health Sciences Job Fair was hosted by the Centre for Co- operative Education, Graduate and Student Employment at the Mohawk- McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences on November 3, 2003. Over 300 students attended and met with representatives from 24 companies to discuss employment opportunities. The event was organized by Linda Basso, Student Employment Co-ordinator and Jady Klyve, Employment Advisor for health sciences programs. The next job fair will be held on February 16, 2003 at Fennell Campus. 3.45 The Centre for Co-operative Education, Graduate and Student Employment hosted the Southwestern Regional Meeting of the Ontario College Career Educators (OCCE) on November 7, 2003. Representatives from Conestoga, Fanshawe, Mohawk, Niagara and St. Clair Colleges were in attendance. The mission of the OCCE is to contribute to the educational growth and career development and promotion of students and graduates. Jady Klyve, Employment Advisor is the OCCE Chair Elect. 3.46 Colleen Hardy and Margaret Thomson, Co-op Consultants attended the 8th Annual Grand River Post-Secondary Information Day at the Student Centre, representing the Centre for Co-operative Education, Graduate and Student Employment on Wednesday, November 12, 2003. 3.47 The Graduate and Student Employment service launched an enhanced virtual office web site featuring job search resources for new Canadians and information for Mohawk College faculty. 3.48 STAFF DEVELOPMENT The Staff Development Officer and two Support Staff members – Roberta Weiss and Paula Crow, attended a one-day planning session at . The planning session is for a three-day Support Staff Conference to be held at in April 2004.

The Staff Development Officer met with the Campus Store staff, and facilitated an exercise on teamwork, recognizing and valuing differing personality styles. The Myer-Briggs Type Indicator was used as a resource for this session.

The following workshops were held at Mohawk College in the month of November.

3.49 Computer Coach Program During the month of November, our Computer Coaches were busy. Twenty-six employees participated in one-on-one computer training sessions. 3.51 On November 25, Lynda Garland from Human Resources attended an HRPAO Seminar in Toronto dealing with “Using Employment Testing to Improve Selection Processes.” The guest speaker was Dr. Brenda Tomini. [Submitted by Joanne Echlin, Director of Human Resources.]

INCREASE FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE

4.1 On the Banner project, two “Mini Mock Registration” sessions were held in November. The purpose of these sessions was to primarily to exercise the parts of the system dealing with fee assessments, billing, fee payments and registration. 4.2 Lidia Piraglia, a consultant from , worked with the Banner Student Team and various staff in the Registrar’s Division to map business processes. This information will be used to tailor Banner functions, and will feed into training and documentation efforts as well. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration]

4.3 Marilyn Gris, Team Lead for Training and Documentation, has begun to present end-user training sessions on Banner Navigation. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration]

4.4 The Epos IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system was installed and testing has begun. Interfaces are being developed to connect Banner to OCAS admissions data and to the ADP Payroll system. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration]
