The second major problem with the new initiative in Libya by President Barack Obama is that it does not deal with Libya’s current fundamental problem — the fact that it has three contending governments, as well as many more independent armed contending mili- tias. There is one government in Tobruk in the east, another in Tripoli, the former capital, and a third, backed by the United Nations, holed up also in Tripoli. Even if the Islamic State in Sirte were to be dispersed, there would be no party in place to pick up governance of the country, in abeyance for almost five years now. So why is Obama’s government involving the United States more deeply in Libya’s chaotic war? Prospects of taking out Islamic State centers in Iraq or Syria before the November elections in the United States are becom- ing less hopeful by the day. So, perhaps Sirte could be reduced, and that action be portrayed as a major U.S. victory against the Islamic State. The hefty U.S. De- fense Department budget is still pending and, thus, a claimed U.S. military victory against IS wouldn’t hurt. For U.S. defense industries, bombing and drone attacks in Libya run up the tab and enhance profits. This escalation of U.S. military involvement in the conflict in Libya simply does not make sense, and should be ended quickly before it proceeds further. Meaningless Middle East wars for no clear purpose, risking American lives and wasting taxpayer money, are simply bad policy.

At the same time that it’s a dangerous thing to have that little a grasp on reality that you’d actually let the outcome of a sporting event affect your life, it’s also one of the many things that make sports fun. After that aforementioned 2014 Super Bowl game, in which Malcolm Butler’s interception secured what was to me a shocking win by the Patriots, I couldn’t get enough of watching YouTube videos of stunned or angry Seahawks fans. The more violent the reaction, the better. But it also occurred to me that if anyone had turned a video camera on me in 1986, when Rich Gedman waved at Bob Stanley’s pitch as it ew past him to allow the tying run in Game 6 of the World Series to score, I’d have been fodder for someone else’s amusement. I was too stunned to even react all that much moments later when Mookie Wilson’s ground ball skipped through Bill Buckner’s legs. Sports teams often command erce loyalties among fans in their regions, and sometimes it’s dif cult to un- derstand why. And it so happens that around here, it’s even more dif cult to comprehend. Why, for example, do so many people live and die for the Red Sox? I’ve always thought that it was became the team supplied a familial continuity of misery.
