Carlos Celis iii RESUMEN Guthrie Govan y Alex Hutchings son dos guitarristas eléctricos británicos, reconocidos por su versatilidad transitando entre diversos géneros, su creatividad y capacidad improvisativa, el desarrollo técnico que han aportado al instrumento, su labor de difusión de música y de recursos y productos asociados a la guitarra eléctrica, entre otros. En este trabajo se realiza un breve acercamiento a su vida y una aproximación analítica a dos temas de cada uno de ellos, “Orange Jam” y “Waves” de Guthrie Govan y “Happy as Larry” y “On the Highway” de Alex Hutchings. El estudio de los temas incluye la transcripción de los solos, la puesta en evidencia de algunas características musicales destacadas de cada uno de los temas, la selección de licks presentes en los solos y la clasificación de los mismos. El centro del trabajo está en la descripción de los licks, la cual tiene la pretensión de ilustrar, por un lado, el material melódico, armónico, rítmico y técnico utilizado por los guitarristas, por otro lado, visibilizar la manera como estos materiales son articulados y confluyen en productos creativos de alta calidad que, gracias a la claridad en la presentación y ejecución que realizan Govan y Hutchngs, sirven de guía en el proceso formativo de las nuevas generaciones de guitarristas eléctricos. PALABRAS CLAVE Licks, Guthrie Govan, Alex Hutchings, Orange Jam, Happy as Larry, guitarra eléctrica ABSTRACT Guthrie Govan and Alex Hutchings are two British electric guitarists, recognized for their versatility transiting between different genres, their creativity and improvisative capacity, the technical development they have contributed to the instrument, their work of disseminating music and resources and products associated with the guitar electric, among others. In this work, a brief approach to his life and an analytical approach to two themes of each of them, "Orange Jam" and "Waves" by Guthrie Govan and "Happy as Larry" and "On the Highway" by Alex Hutchings. The study of the themes includes the transcription of the solos, the highlighting of some outstanding musical characteristics of each of the themes, the selection of licks presents in the solos and their classification. The center of the work is in the description of the licks, which is intended to illustrate, on the one hand, the melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and technical material used by the guitarists, on the other hand, to make visible the way in which these materials are articulated and they converge in high quality creative products that, thanks to the clarity in the presentation and execution that Govan and Hutchngs perform, serve as a guide in the formative process of the new generations of electric guitarists. Okay, drei der Mitglieder von Arc Of Life gehören zum aktuellen Line-up von Yes. Doch sind Sänger Jon Davison, Bassist / Sänger Billy Sherwood und Schlagzeuger Jay Schellen mehr in die Kategorie der soliden Historienverwalter des Prog Dinosauriers zu betrachten, als dass sie zu den prägenden Protagonisten in der jüngeren Yes Geschichte zählen würden. Vervollständigt wird das Quartett von Keyboarder Dave Kerzner (u.a. Sound Of Contact, Dave Kerzner Band) und Gitarrist Jimmy Haun, der u.a. einen Teil der Gitarrenparts auf dem 91er Yes Album „Union“ beisteuerte. Der Fünfer sieht sich als Band, statt nur als loses Projekt und möchte laut Pressemitteilung die Progressive-Rock- Philosophie fortführen, dabei kreative, fordernde, aber auch ohrenfreundliche Musik erschaffen, die Grenzen überschreitet. Nun ja, hehre Worte, die Realität hört sich (nach eigenem Empfinden) dann doch etwas anders an. Denn Arc Of Life drückt in erster Linie Billy Sherwood seinen deutlich vernehmbaren Stempel auf. Die zehn Titel klingen damit weit weniger nach eigenständiger Band, denn nach einem weiteren Soloalbum des ohnehin enorm umtriebigen Sherwood. Vieles ist daher von einem Mix aus Symphonic Rock und AOR geprägt, der die deutliche HandschriftSherwood s trägt: mehrstimmige, verschachtelte Arrangements, voluminöse, überladen produzierte Sounds mit melodischem Einschlag. Das ist zwar gefällig anzuhören, verfügt stellenweise über einen erkennbaren Anspruch, doch krankt dieses Album einmal mehr an einer überfrachteten Orientierungslosigkeit. Hier dominiert mehr Schein als Sein, denn von den Melodien bleibt nichts so recht hängen, die Instrumentalparts lassen spielerisches Können erkennen, fügen sich aber mitunter etwas zufällig in den Gesamtkontext ein.

Immerhin sind Kompositionen wie das Richie Havens-Cover ‚No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed‘ von der zweiten Yes- Veröffentlichung, sowie zwei weitere Coverversionen mit ‚Imagine‘ von John Lennon sowie ‚America‘ von Paul Simon dabei, die bisher seltener auf einem Live-Medium zu hören sind. Das Konzert wurde am 26. Juli 2019 im Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas während der „The Royal Affair Tour“ aufgenommen und von Billy Sherwood gemixt. Yes sind aktuell Steve Howe (Gitarre), Alan White (Schlagzeug), Geoff Downes (Keyboards), Sänger Jon Davison sowie Billy Sherwood, der nach dem Tod von Gründungsmitglied und Bassist Chris Squire im Jahre 2015 den Bass übernahm. Außerdem wird Jay Schellen im Booklet als Yes- Musiker aufgeführt, der das Schlagzeugspiel live wesentlich bereichert. Ein Gründungsmitglied ist bei Yes inzwischen nicht mehr an Bord, womit der dienstälteste Yesser Steve Howe, der 1971 auf dem „Yes Album“ die Gitarre für Peter Banks übernahm, das Zepter übernommen hat. Als Gast hört man die Moody-Blues-Legende John Lodge, der sich auf ‚Imagine‘ den Gesang mit Jon Davison teilt.
