STAHEL Zoologiscbes Museum der Universitlit Zi~ricb; Ziirich, Scbweiz ABSTRACT: Environmental conditions affecting the occurrence of Astropecten aranciacus (Asteroidea, Echinodermata). In shallow water off the north coast of Sardinia (western Mediterranean) the frequency of occurrence of the starfish Astropecten aranciacus was recorded in 70 sample areas of 25 ms each. Four environmental factors, namely depth, average sand grain diameter, number of mollusc species, and number of individuals of the genus Echino- cardium proved to be related to the abundance of A. aranciacus. The sediment contained many species, each, as a rule, being present at low abundance. The molluscs found and their sizes are listed. In this study, seven echinoderm species are reported for the first time from the Levantine coast of Turkey. These are, five ophiroid species; Amphipholis squamata, Amphiura chiajei, Amphiura filiformis, Ophiopsila aranea, and Ophiothrix quinquemaculata and two echinoid species; Echinocyamus pusillus and Stylocidaris affinis. Turkey is surrounded by four seas with different hydrographical characteristics and Turkish Straits System (Çanakkale Strait, Marmara Sea and İstanbul Strait) serve both as a biological corridor and barrier between the Aegean and Black Seas. The number of echinoderm species in the coasts of Turkey also varies due to the different biotic environments of these seas. There are 14 echinoderm species reported from the Black Sea, 19 species from the İstanbul Strait, 51 from the Marmara Sea, 71 from the Aegean Sea and 42 from the Levantine coasts of Turkey. Among these species, Asterias rubens, Ophiactis savignyi, Diadema setosum, and Synaptula reciprocans are alien species for the Turkish coasts. The dimorphisms in the length-width-weight relationships were observed for the epibentic fauna due presumably to the sexes whereas biometrically dimorphic relationship was not structured for the common flat fishes. Maximum number of growth cohorts changed between >C2 (Buglossidium luteum) and >C4 (Arnoglossus laterna) for the flatfishes. Nine cohorts coexisted for a hermit crab, a crustacean species. Three muricid (Mollusca) species were classified with maximum number of cohort up to >C2 and the nassariid gastropods as well. A Lesepsian bivalve, Pinctada radiata displayed two growth cohorts, and three cohorts based on disc thickness of a seastar (Astropecten irregularis). Conservation and management 113 CARLO NIKE BIANCHI · FRANCESCO CINELLI · GIULIO RELINI ■ Italian and international laws on protection All the species of Italian phanerogams growing in marine and/or brackish waters are considered deserving of protection as species and/or habitats, and are listed in international agreements and conventions. Unfortunately, in the Habitats Directive, adopted by Italy with the “Regulations implementing EEC Directive 92/43 relating to the conservation of natural Neptune grass flower and semi-natural habitats, as well as the wild flora and fauna, D.P.R. 357 of 08.09.1997 (G.U. 248 of 23.10.1997)”, the only marine phanerogam cited is Posidonia oceanica, and as a habitat (Annex I) and not as a species (Annexes II and IV). This is an enormous problem, because Directive 92/43 is the most important and cogent law for nature conservation as it is the only one with true sanctioning powers. The 1979 Berne Convention on wildlife and the natural environment in Europe was ratified by Italy in 1981 (Law 503 of 05/08/1981), but its Annexes regarding plants were only modified in 1996 (implemented by Italy in 1998) with the insertion of various species, including Cymodocea nodosa, Posidonia oceanica and Zostera marina. These were inserted in Annex 1, covering strictly protected plant species, for the conservation of which it is also necessary to protect the habitats in which they grow. It is the only convention, for the moment, in which C. nodosa is also considered as a species to be strictly protected. A fundamental contribution towards surmounting the shortcomings of the Habitats Directives in the marine environment is provided by the Barcelona Convention (1995), which contains various protocols, including the “Protocol related to specially protected areas and the biological diversity of the Mediterranean” (SPA/BIO). -

UDC: 593.9(497.16) SPATIAL AND SEASONAL DISTRIBUTION OF ECHINODERMS IN THE BOKA KOTORSKA BAY Sl a v i c a Ka š ć e l a n Institute for Marine Biology, Dobrota bb, Kotor, Montenegro, E-mail: [email protected] This paper presents the results of an investigation into the diversity of echinoderms inside the Boka kotorska Bay, as well as their spatial and seasonal distribution. This area is characterized by a specific complex of physical-chemical parameters of the sea water and sediments, which make it a particular biotope. Regarding the biology of echinoderms as sessile and slow- moving animals, the environment has an important role in their distribution and abundance. Obtained results show the presence of 32 species, distributed over diverse kinds of sea bottoms and different depths. Statistical analyses of samples show very low seasonal differences. According to the bottom type, the highest average similarity is recorded from samples taken from Posidonia oceanica meadows and rocky bottoms. Research was carried out during the summers from 1995 to 2002 at 63 sites by SCUBA and skin divers to a maximum depth of 58 m. At 21 stations, deeper specimens were collected by a Van VEEN grab. At 6 sites, echinoderms were obtained from commercial trammel bottom sets or lobster pots. Earlier published records were reviewed and old collections were examined. In total, 53 species and one ecophenotype were recorded. General distribution, depth range, habitat and ecological notes are listed for each species. The morphology, behaviour and distributional patterns are discussed for a number of species. Specimens of Holothuria sp. cf. mammata, Arbaciella elegans, and Brissopsis aff. mediterranea are described in detail and illustrated. The majority belongs to some of the largest phyla (Protozoa, Platyhelminthes, Annelida, Mollusca and Arthropoda), but representatives of small and inconspicuous groups such as Mesozoa, Rotatoria, Tardigrada and 4 ZOOLOGISCHE VERHANDELINGEN 156 (1977) Entoprocta have repeatedly been recorded as associates of echinoderms. Vertebrates living in echinoderms are exemplified by the fishes of the genus Carapus, which are associated with holothurians. Other examples from phyla which are rarely involved in intimate relation- ships with echinoderms are the ctenophore Coeloplana astericola, which was found in great numbers on Echinaster luzonicus from Amboina (Mortensen, 1927a) and the sponge Microcordyla asteriae, which was found at the bases of the arm spines of Asterias tenuispina at Naples (Zirpolo, 1927). Not only animals, but also a few plant species have been recorded to live in or on echinoderms. -
