Dorothy Rose Adam : Dorothy Rose.Adam, 630 Riverview Lane, Eaton Rapids, age 72, died Tuesday, August 23, 1983 at the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital where she had been a patient for only a matter of hours. Mrs. Adam was born in and had lived in Eaton Rapids for the past 10 years. Previous to that, she and her husband, Paul, had lived in Grosse Isle. She was a member of St. Peter's Church. Surviving besides her husband, Paul are 3 children, 1 son, Jack of San Francisco, 2 daughters, Ardel Nelson of Lansing and JoAnne Boyer of San Francisco. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren; 1 great-grand­ child; 2 brothers, Edward and Donald McDonnell of Bloomfield Hills, Michi­ gan and 1 sister, Evelyn Bird of Troy. Prayer services were held Thursday evening at the Skinner Chapel and Funeral Mass was Friday, August 26 from St. Peter's Church with inter­ ment following in Holy Sepulchre Ceme­ tery at Southfield, Michigan. Casket bearers were Jack Adam, Roger and Michael Nelson, Donald McDonnell, Orville Heeke and James Joyes. A Dorothy R. Helen M. Adams Helen M. Adams of Eaton Rapids passed away at the St. Lawrence Center, Octo­ ber 19, 1983 at the age of 81. She was born in Marquette, Mi., October 2, 1902. She moved to Eaton Rapids 19 years ago from Pontiac where she was employed as a nurse for 13 years. She attended the Congregational Church of Eaton Rapids. Her husband, Gates Adams, preceded her in death in March 29, 1982. Surviving are 2 daughters, Joyce Maupin of Eaton Rapids and Shirley McVoy of Gualala, California; 1 granddaughter, Martha Maupin; 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Graveside services were held at Rosehill Cemetery Friday, October 21 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Paul Mergener officiating. Arrangements were by the Shelly Funeral Home. Mary L. Baldwin Mary L. Baldwin, age 87, died May 19, 1983 at Dimondale Center. She was a lifelong resident of Onondaga and Eaton County. She was employed at the VFW National Home before her re­ tirement. Mrs. Baldwin was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Bald­ win in 1971. Surviving are a daughter, 3

Funeral services were held Monday, May 23 at 1 p.m. at the Shelly Funeral Home. Casket bearers were Donald Phillips, Gerald Phillips, William Phillips, Fred Baldwin Jr., Victor Baldwin and Scott Baldwin. Pastor Eric Beck from the First United Methodist Church of­ ficiated. Leota Becklund Eaton Rapids Died early Thursday morning at a Grand Rapids hospital. Leota was employed by the Eaton Rapids Public Schools be­ fore her retirement. She was a member of the Congregational Church and Eaton Rapids O.E.S. #241. Surviving are 1 daughter, Mrs. Terry (Dee} Brenner of Grand Rapids; 1 son, Jim of Eaton Rapids; 5 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs. Helen Strang of Eaton Rapids and Mrs. Florence Swift of Mason. Leo W. Benjamin Leo W. Benjamin, Charlotte, formerly of Eaton Rapids, age 90, died Monday, February 14, 1983 at a Charlotte hospi­ tal. He was born January 22, 1893 in Papineau, Illinois, the son of Andrew and Charlotte Benjamin. He at­ tended 'Valpraiso University and in 1916 was employed by New York Central Railroad as an agent and telegraph operator. In that capacity he came to Eaton Rapids in 1928 and completed a total of 27 years of service to the local community. He was formerly a city-commissioner, an Eaton Rapids re­ presentative on the Eaton County Board of Supervisors for 18 years and served 9 years on the Eaton County Medical Care Facility Board. He was affiliated with the Congregational Church, was a life member of Masonic Lodge #63 F&AM, a former member of the Lions Club and the Rotary Club. Surviving are his 5 wife, Mary; 1 daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Richard Montgomery of Wil­ liamston; grandson, Lee Montgomery and wife, Joan; grandaughter, Dee Martin and husband, Vance and 3 great­ granchildren, Michael, Laurel and Sannie. Funeral services were held Friday, February 18 at 1 p.m. at the Shelly Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment was in Rosehill Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Mergener officiated. Casket bearers were Alex Allan, Claude Basing, Charles Cartwright, Gerald Gillett, Maynard Hastay and Richard Robinson. Lucille A. Bothwell Lucille A. Bothwell, age 72, of Fountain, Michigan, died Saturday evening, Dec­ ember 17, 1983 at the Ludington Memor­ ial Hospital, Ludington, Michigan, after a short illness. She was pre­ ceded in death by her husband, Guy, in May 1983. Surviving are 2 sons, Eugene and Stanley; 2 daughters, Mrs. Ardell Meadows and Mrs. Gretchen Scott; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Bernice Turner of Keene, New Hampshire. David Cadger David Cadger, 1277 Canal Road, Eaton Rapids, age 59, died Friday, February 4, 1983 at the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital. He was born in Highland Park, April 11, 1923, the son of David and Erna Cadger. He was a veteran of WW II and was employed by the Eaton Rapids Public Schools as head of Main~ tenance. Surviving are his wife, Leona; 1 step-daughter, Shirley Johnson of Eaton Rapids; 1 step-son, Jack Paquette of Wolverine; 5 grandchildren; 7 great­ grandchildren and 1 brother, Nathan. Funeral services were held Monday, February 7 at 1 p.m. at the Shelly Funeral Home with Rev. S.D. Baker of­ ficiating. Interment was in Munger Cemetery. Patsy Caterino Patsy Caterino, 1444 Water Street, Eaton Rapids, died Saturday morning, January 22. He had been in ill health for some time but had been in the hospital only one day. Mr. Caterino was born January 31, 1899 in Consenza, Italy and came to the United States in 1921. He has lived in Eaton Rapids since 1929. He 8 worked for the city in the sewer and water department and retired in 1964 after 31 years of service. His know­ ledge of the location of the old water mains and pipes was a source of infor­ mation until his death. He was a mem­ ber of St. Peter Catholic Church. Sur­ viving are his wife, Laura; 2 sons, Frank of Reed City and Richard of Stanton; 9 grandchildren and 11 great­ grandchildren. Prayer services were held Sunday evening at the Skinner Chapel with the funeral mass Monday, January 24 from St. Peter Catholic Church with Rev. John 0. Hayes officia­ ting. Interment was in Rosehill Cemetery with Stanley Bell, Roy Craun, Leslie and Melvin Dewaters, Frank Naylor and George Pettit acting as bearers. Flashes Shoppers Guide January 25, 1983

Arthur D. Clark Arthur D. Clark, 503 Montgomery Street, Eaton Rapids, age 94, passed away Sun­ day, February 20 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte. Mr. Clark was born February 4, 1889 in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, son of Condit and Elizabeth Mapes Clark. He was a carpenter engineer by trade and lived in Eaton Rapids for many years. He is survived by his wife, Wauneta; 2 sons, Richard and 9 wife of San Diego, California and Gerald and wife of Webster, New York; 1 daughter, Marna Smith of San Diego; 1 stepson, Rolland Doxtader of Plea­ sant Lake; 7 grandchildren; many great­ grandchildren; nieces and nephews. No funeral services are planned and cremation took place February 22. The Family suggests any memorial contri­ bution be made to the Griffith United Memorial Church. Kenneth F. Clone Kenneth F. Clone, 500 S. Michigan Road, Eaton Rapids, age 64, died Thursday, June 30, 1983 at his home. He was born June 22, 1919 in Parma Twp., the son of Jesse and Thera Clone. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the Eaton Rapids Schools as a bus me­ chanic. Surviving are his wife, Alma; 10 sons, Gary of Williamsburg, Mi., Wayne, Michael and Terry all of Eaton Rapids, Ronald of Elk Rapids, Patrick of Onondaga, Philip of California, Alan and Robert both of Lansing, Tom Brooks of Eaton Rapids; 2 daughters, Shari Polan­ sky of Mankato, Mn. and Tammy Brooks at home; 15 grandchildren; 1 sister, Twila Frank of Albion and 1 brother, Gaylord Clone of Eaton Rapids. A Wake 10 service was held at the home on Friday evening at 7 p.m. Funeral services were held at the Onondaga Township Hall on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Larry Mannino officiating. Interment was in Onondaga Cemetery. The sons acted as casket bearers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Rapids Athletic Boosters. Arrangements were by the Shelly Funeral Home. Ileta J. Clouse Charlotte Formerly of Eaton Rapids Age 58, died Sunday, November 6, 1983. She was a life time area resident and proprietor of a Ileta's Hair Styles in Eaton Rapids for 28 years. Survi­ ving are her husband, Richard; 1 son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Lorene Clouse of Okemos; daughter-in-law, Krystyna Wilson. One son, Duane, preceded her in death in 1969. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, Carmen Clouse, Jeff Wilson, Richard Duane Clouse and Harmony Jean Clouse; 1 sis­ ter, Mrs. Betty Haley of Eaton Rapids; 1 brother, Harold Davis of Scaramento, Ca. Funeral services will be Tuesday, 2 p.m. at the Baptist Church, Eaton Rapids. Burial in Rosehill Cemetery. 11

He was a life time area resident and re­ tired at age 70 after 27 years in Re­ search with the Federal Regional Poultry in Okemos. He is survived by 3 sons, Rex of Charlotte, Max of Springport and Justin, Sr: of Lansing; 1 daughter, Mrs. Dulcie Morris of Lansing; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren. Donald Bruce Davis Donald Bruce Davis was born May 2, 1955 in Santa Maria, California, son of Melvin Harold and Fannie Davis. He came to Eaton Rapids in 1970 and gradua- 13 ted from the Eaton Rapids High School in January 1973. In May of that year he was married to Judy Ann Shaw. In 1981 he graduated from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky and became minister of the Faith Baptist Chapel in Sandusky, Mi­ chigan. He was forced to give up his church when he became ill last Sept­ ember. Last Thursday, June 16, 1983 he went to be with his Lord. Surviving are his wife, Judy; 2 daughters, ,Jen­ nifer and Melody; 2 sisters, Mrs. Pat Taylor of Eaton Rapids and Mrs. Joanne Puente of Lansing; 2 brothers, Robert of Sacramento, California and David of Yakima, Washington. Funeral ser­ vices were held Monday, June 20 from the Eaton Rapids Baptist Church with Pastor Cecil Campbell II officiating and interment was in the Rosehill CE·metery. SpE!Cial music was by Norma Simmons, organist and Dennis Taylor, vocalist. Casket bearers were Mark Crippen, Joe Fields, Brian Hanley, Terry and Harry Gibbs and Gordon Wright. Township, Ingham County, April 22, 1893. He departed this life May 8, 1983 at the age of 90 years, 15 days. He was the son of Daniel and Nettie Roush Decamp. At the age of 3, his parents moved to the farm in Aurelius Township, Ingham County which has since been his home. Mr. Decamp is survived by his wife, Margaret; 1 nephew, Cleo Decamp of Mason; 1 grand-nephew, Vance Decamp of Williamston; 2 grand-nieces, Anne Daman of Bath and Alice Richmond of Florissant, Mo. Religious services will be held at the Skinner Funeral Chapel, Wednesday, May 11, 2 p.m. with Rev. Wade Panse and Rev. Paul Mergener officiating.· Interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, May 9 and 10. Mr. Eldridge was taken to the Engle Funeral Home in Hazard, Kentucky where services are scheduled in the Yerkes Baptist Church, Thursday, June 9 at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Scalem Cemetery. Kathilien Ellsworth Kathilien A. Ellsworth, 3731 Spicer­ ville Highway, Charlotte, died August 4 in a Lansing hospital. She had been ill for a year and a half and in the hospital for 5 weeks. Mrs. Ellsworth was born May 13, 1916 in Muskegon, Michigan, daughter of Hazel and Alon­ zo Braman and had been a lifetime area resident. She worked as a tele­ phone operator in Charlotte until her marriage to C. Hall Ellsworth when she became a farmer's housewife and homemaker. She was a 4-H leader of 20 years with one of the oldest clubs in Eaton County. Living in Brookfield Township she was very ac­ tive in the Order of the Eastern Star. A Past Worthy Matron she was presently 17 and for the past 15 years secretary of the Lodge. She is survived by 1 daughter, Mrs. Robert (Karlien) Ben­ nett of St. Johns; 1 son, David of Charlotte; 1 sister, Mrs. Edith Brown of Bellingham, Washington and 2 grand­ children, Leland Fell and Mishka Ben­ nett. Her husband, C. Hall Ellsworth preceded her in death in July 1969. Funeral services were held Monday, August 8 from the Skinner Chapel with Rev. Paul Mergener officiating. Eastern Star services were given by the Brook­ field Lodge O.E.S. #352. He was a member of Eaton Rapids Lodge #63 F&AM. Surviving are his wife, Violet; 3 daughters, Barbara Johnson of Kalamazoo, Sandra Reed of Ca. and Dianne Paprenec of Grand Rapids; 2 sons, DeForest Pierce of Eaton Ra- 18 pids and Michael Pierce of Lansing; 16 grandchildren; 1 great~grandchild and 3 sisters, Mrs. Carl Sayers, Mrs. Law­ rence Bell and Grace Evans all of Lan­ sing. VFW Road Eaton Rapids Age 78, died Tuesday, March 29, 1983 at a Lansing hospital. He was a car­ penter and cabinet maker in the area for many years. He was a member of the Griffith Church, Eaton Rapids I.0.0.F. #31 and Eaton Rapids F&AM #63 .. George Leigh Hill George Leigh Hill of Eaton Rapids died Friday, June 3, 1983 at the Masonic Home in Alma. He was a lifelong resi­ dent of Eaton County before moving to Alma and had celebrated his lOOth birthday there on February 1st. Mr. Hill was a Life Member of the Masonic Lodge of Potterville and had received his 70 year membership in in 1982. He was also a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Eaton Rapids. Frank D. Masek 612 Riverview Eaton Rapids Frank D. Masek, 86, a strong individual in body, mind and spirit was born on the eve of All Saint's Day at the turn of the century in London, England. He died on December 13, 1983, the anniversary of his coming to America. Mr. Masek spent most of his adult life in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where he worked as an engineer for the Marquette County Road Commission, and after early retirement, at the Blaney Park Resort. Mr. Masek served with the Red Arrow Division in Europe in the Headquarters Company of the 121st Field Artillery during W.W. I. He was entitled to wear 2 gold war service chevrons and the Victory Medal 38 with bars for Aisne-Marne, Oise-Aisne, and Meuese-Argonne. He was a 52 year continuing member of American Legion Post 58 of Ishpeming, Michigan, Past Master of Marquette Lodge #101 F&AM, life member of Eaton Rapids Lodge #63 F&AM, member of O.E.S. #241, Eaton Rapids, AASR, Valley of Marquette, and a 32nd Degree Mason in the Valley of Marquette. He was also former secre­ tary of Eaton Rapids Chamber of Com­ merce, a member of Rocking Chair De­ serters, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eaton Rapids. After the death of his first wife, Jean, in 1961, Mr. Masek moved to Manistique, Michigan where he served in St. Alban's Episcopal Church as Lay Minister. In 1963 he married Mrs. Elna Mattson and they established' fesidence in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his par­ ents, 6 brothers and sisters, an in­ fant daughter, his wife, Jean and in 1976 his second wife, Elna. He is survived by 1 son, Frank D. Masek, Jr.; his brother, Fred of Milwaukee, Wis­ consin and a sister, Mrs. Connie Knoll of Escanaba, Michigan; numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his step-son and wife, Morton E. and Jan Mattson and grandsons, Dave, Steve, Jim and Dan of Lansing. In addition, Mr. Masek was privileged to have as a dear friend and companion for the past 5 years, Mrs. Frances Petreikis of Eaton Rapids. They shared, along with other senior citizens, a view 39 that the aging process is a period of continuing development and service to others. She lived in the Eaton Rapids area for the past 40 years. For a number of years Mrs. Miller was the organist at the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church and organized the First Youth Choir there. Harry W. Nichols Harry W. Nichols of 221 Railroad St., Rives Junction, passed away at Foote Hospital, December 26, 1983, age 76. He was a life member of Masonic Lodge #185 of Pleasant Lake and retired from the Jackson County Highway Department after 41 years of service. Alger J. Nielson Alger J. Nielsen of Wolcottville, Indiana died Wednesday, June 29 at his home on Big Long Lake. Mr. Nielsen was born in Greenville and graduated from Greenville High School. He then was employed as a trainee by Lines 5¢ to $1 Stores, a chain of 5 stores in Howell. After 8 weeks of training, he was transferred to Plymouth, Mi. to manage one of their larger stores. He left there in 1936 to open a store for an independent in Eaton Rapids. In January of 1938 Haffner's 5¢ to $1.00 Stores, Inc. of Garrett purchased the store retaining Mr. Nielsen as manager. In 1940 he was made a District Manager, supervising 7 stores in Michi­ gan, Ohio and Indiana. In 1945 he was made Merchandise Manager and Buyer for Haffner's Inc. and its associate company Mutual Jobbing Co. now of Auburn. He was elected to the Board of Directors in December 1951 and in 1969 he was made Vice President and General Manager. He was a member of 43 the Eaton Rapids F&AM #63. He is sur­ vived by his wife, Evelyn (Washburn); 1 daughter, Mrs. Mary Jo Gillespie of. California; 1 sister, Helen C. Neilsen of Greenville; 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. David C. Noss David C. Noss, 1305 West Street, Eaton Rapids, died Friday~ May 20 at a Lan­ sing hospital. Mr. Noss was born December 1, 1915 in Albion, Michigan. He was a Veteran of the 2nd World War serving 4 years in the Army in the Aleutian Islands. Richard Lewis Ribby Richard Lewis Ribby, Bunker Highway, Eaton Rapids died December 22nd at the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital. He had been in failing health since the death of his wife Rose in April 1981. Mr. Ribby was born January 3, 1922 in Holt, Michigan but had lived in rural Eaton Rapids for the past sev­ eral years. H~ was an Army Veteran during the Second World War and served with the Military Police overseas. He was retired from the Holt Public Schools where he worked on maintenance. He worked for the State of Michigan and retired in 1978 as Chief Engineer at Jackson State Prison. For the past 2 years he had been work­ ing part-time for the Onondaga Zoning Board. Surviving are his wife, Beth; 2 sons, James Wells Squires of Lansing and Robert Barrett Squires of Jackson; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Luther E. "Tom" Thompson, Lansing, Michigan formerly of Eaton Rapids died Friday, May 6 at a Lansing Nur­ sing home. Mr. Thompson was born December 25, 1889 in Cleveland, Tenne­ ssee and spent his life working in the Textile Industry, twenty-five years of which were in the Horner Woolen Mill where he was supervisor in the spinning department. He was married March 18, 1935 to Flossie Leseney. The past ten years they have lived in Lansing. Surviving are his wife, Flossie, one daughter, Mary Wilkinson, one grandson, Lon Wilkinson and one granddaughter, Susan Cupp, and four great~grandchildren. He was a member of the United Brother­ hood of Carpenters Local 1449 and was a former member of the Lions Club of Bellevue where he operated a Lumber Yard for many years. Surviving are his wife, Brigitte; 3 daughters, Mrs. William (Renee) Adee and Miss Gina Trosper of Pleasant Lake and Melissa Trosper at home; his parents, Mabel and Leonard Trosper of Eaton Rapids; 1 sister, Mrs. Victor (Peggy} White of Lansing; 1 brother, James of Eaton Rapids; 2 stepsons, Donald and Steven Moga of Olivet; 6 grandchildren and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.
